UEFA have announced that teams will be allowed an extra substitution if Champions League matches go into extra time next season.

Liverpool will take part in their second consecutive Champions League campaign after reaching the final in their first season back in the competition since 2014/15 last term.

And if the Reds progress to the latter stages of the competition next term they will be able to call upon an extra substitute should any of their games go to extra time.

FIFA have brought in the same rule during this summer's World Cup, allowing sides to bring on another pair of fresh legs in extra time - taking the total of substitutions allowed to four.

The rule will also be in place for the UEFA Europa League, Super Cup, European Championship in 2020 and Women's competitions.

I was wondering about this the other night - do you only get the 4th substitute in extra time if you used all 3 in normal time? Or can you, for example, use 2 subs in normal time & then another 2 during ET?

You can use none in normal time and four in extra time if you like

Stupid rule.. Next it will be roll on roll off every 20 minutes.

The OAPs like GKMacca will be spitting into their helpings of scouse over the news. Calling for a hash back to the days where only 1 sub was allowed, and even then he only came on if their was an injury.

Cheeky! Rafa's quite a bit older than me. This avatar's not me, y'know!

Generally I think rule changes like this are geared towards helping the bigger clubs with a bench full of top players so it rewards the likes of Chelsea or City stockpiling players. For that reason Im against it.

World cups are different because its alot of games in a short space of time and teams may have to play 120 mins 3 or 4 times over the course of the competition.

Spot on!

4 is too much for club competition.

Imagine how many times we could have called on El Zhar from the bench if this rule was implemented during Rafa's time managing us!

Heh, the flip side is, the lad might have actually got a game. Same for the likes of Woodburn etc, but anyway. I'm on the fence with this, I like the idea of it, but as said, it does benefit the bigger teams more.

That's a bit of a nonsense, as it's hardly a selling point.

"Come to our club as should we reach the CL knockout stages and should one of those ties go to extra time, the chances are very high you'll get gametime then! Maybe even up to 30 mins in four different games!!!!'

Games often go to pot in ET due to fatigue, with both teams just biding time until penalties. It's designed to reduce these instances, I think.

..but if you're Poland bringing on Billy no-mark in the 105th minute, and you're facing Brazil who bring on Bobby Firmino or whoever, it doesn't really wash, does it?

It's ultimately an arbitrary number, anyway, Mark, and it's only change that people are railing against. Are you against subs altogether? If not, why are you satisfied with three? And not two? Or one?

Saying that, your country example doesn't wash (countries shouldn't be punished for producing more good players), though the previous club one might. But, even then, the instances of extra time in the CL are pretty rare and the difference one sub will make is pretty minor.

I'm not against it. I think in terms of controlling fatigue on the pitch (especially in light of recent incidents over the last few years) it's a good idea and long overdue. I do see the quality thing though as a bit of an advantage to the bigger teams.

Let's face it, extra time doesn't often happen in the Champions league anyway, except maybe in the final.
