His name is Francisco Portillo Soler, or Portillo for short.
Born and raised in Malaga, the 22-year-old is a product of the Malaga youth system having joined the club at 16 from local side El Palo.
His first appearance for the first team came in the 2009 pre-season peace cup match against Aston Villa, a game that Malaga won 1-0, and Portillo was given man of the match.
Portillo continued playing with Atletico Malagueno, or the ‘B’ team for the remainder of the season, but did make his La Liga debut, coming on as a substitute at the Bernabeu as Malaga were beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid.
The following summer the club was going through a transitional period, as the club was taken over by mega rich Sheik Al Thani, and new players such as Ignacio Camacho, Martin Demichelis, and Albert Luque were signed.
However under new manager Mauricio Pellegrini, Portillo was given more opportunity’s with the first team, mostly on the right hand side of midfield or through the middle behind the striker.
He went on to make 20 appearances for the first team that season as Malaga finished safely in 11th place, but all was to once again change in the summer.
Malaga showed they meant business by splashing the cash on several new midfielders including, Santi Cazorla, Jeremy Toulalan, Joaquin, and Valencia youngster Isco.
This meant Portillo was dropped down the pecking order, and for most weeks not even selected in the match squad, making only 2 league appearances, and 1 cup game as Malaga historically finished 4th in the La Liga table, qualifying for the Champions league.
Turmoil ensued the following summer as the Sheik Al Thani, refusing to pay off debts, leading to Santi Cazorla, Solomon Rondon, and Enzo Maresca being sold on.
With the smaller squad this season, Portillo is now an important first team member, and putting in some brilliant performances.
Stepping into the starting XI with Jeremy Toulalan injured, Portillo has linked with Isco, and Joaquin perfectly, and masterminded some of the best results the club has ever seen, including the 1-0 win over AC Milan at La Rosaleda stadium.
His performances alongside fellow Andalusian Isco, has even led to some calling them the Andres Iniesta, and Lionel Messi of Malaga.
The two of them have become a nightmare for defences , with Portillo occupying the space behind the striker, allowing Isco the room to dominate from midfield, and the two often switching these positions throughout a match.
Portillo scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 victory over Levante, a brilliant first time volley into the top corner.
All is going well for Malaga at the moment, and with Portillo contracted until 2015, and Isco rumoured to be signing a new deal, fans of La Boquerones will hopefully be entertained by the Messi/Iniesta of the south for a long time to come.
