I would like to say that 'knowing' Roger/Evo/Ace of Hearts, I don't think his comments were made b/c he's racist but they were offensive and taken as racist by Foureyes, and hence were wrong and it should have ended with an honest apology. That it's exploded into this 30+ page thread shows how sensitive and difficult subject this is. Alas, it's hard to see the world through another person's eyes. I can never understand the racism you've experienced, though I can relate and visa versa ... If only we could all 'try' and live by Ethics of our Fathers 2:5, "Judge not thy fellow man until thou come to his situation" ...

If you weren't the minority, you wouldn't encounter this racial descrimination and whatever that you mentioned earlier in this thread and if you were the majority you wouldn't come across as half as emotionally charged on this subject as you do as a Minority in the UK. No doubt, your a good person and you'd still have strong values on the matter....

I made a good post about intent, but I can't find it.

The words 'onion' and 'bhajees' have no meaning aside from what effect it is intended to convey.

Roger does not like foureyes.He's said as much, and it has come out in other threads where Roger has been a cock, which is of course something he excels in.

If someone doesn't like me and made a comment like that, I'd feel hurt. Because I'd logically assume that it was not a playground comment, but a comment with racial undertones which was calculated to hurt me.

When I read Roger's post, I actually thought the same thing that foureyes did.

Then again, I'm Asian so maybe I'm extra sensitive ;D

He's now said he didn't mean to be offensive, and apologised for it. Which was a good thing to do.

Of course, his valiant defenders have made an excellent point in suggesting that Roger's statement was not racist, it was merely offensive.

WHilst I would not argue with the legal definition as decided by the ECHR, it must be realised that foureyes was not taking up a case with the EEOC.

He was merely saying that he felt offended, as did I.

(Although I think onion bhajees are horrid)

Apologies if my initial post was brash HC. But the two points I was trying to make were:

* If something is wrong, I don't think I should accept it. Even if the majority of people are going to persist with it anyway, I still find the need to challenge it. Of 100 people, you might make 1 person think twice: that's still something IMO.

* The last bit of your post. Even if the ignorance is not aimed at me, it's the act of ignorance in itself that would upset me. In all Black/Asian company, I have challenged racism towards white people with the exact same commitment.

As I said in your line of work and your personality etc all show your a nice enough person and no doubt you WOULD defend a colleague/randomer of different race who was being racially attacked, but it is easier saying that knowing what you know now and what you've learnt from first and second hand and I believe it is easier said than done, I've never had a racist comment made against me, I'd like to think I'd intervene in the similar circumstances to the above, however never really having had encountered racism does make it difficult, especially in a not so clearly cut circumstance as Roger Vs Foureyes.

How is a jibe that is based around the cultural background of the target "clearly" NOT racist?

Why can you not understand that you do not get to tell somebody that a racially based comment aimed at them wasn't really racist, even if they took it that way, because they're too thin skinned.

Roger may not be a racist. But his comment was of a racial nature. As Anita said somewhere back there, he wouldn't have used that particular phrase, where 4Is an Italian. So the comment was based around his background. His culture. His RACE.

Therefore...

Question: Were 4Is openly gay, and roger had said "are you gonna throw your handbag at me?" or something similar, would you be arguing the same basic point?

Good point. Now if I were to make that jibe at a gay person and they took offence to it, do I really have the right to tell them to shut up and be less sensitive? I don't think so personally. That person may have had the 'handbag' jibe thrown at them constantly for the last 30years or so, so of course they will be offended by it, even though some people may say the comment wasn't that offensive. I'd apologise and accept their point of view. It's not for me to judge what they do or don't find offensive.

We have gotten past the whole offensive thing 30 pages ago. Everyone even Rog agrees you could have felt offended and nobody has the right to say you weren't.
This debate is now about racism.
