From time to time i have offended a poster or two and when that has been made apparant to me i have apologised.
In addition, i have often told a poster to pack it in if they are winding another poster up. I try to be fair and even handed in all my dealings on here, and would only ask that other posters do the same and treat their fellow posters with a smidge of respect.
Yes people get offended by the funniest things, and i think people by now know me well enough to know that i dont get offended by anything at all, i never have, it just doesnt bother me. But that isnt to suggest for one minute that i would stand by and let someone feel persecuted on here or in life.
I dont find the original statement very condescending (incidentally the arguement that is raging between Rosco and Foureyes has nothing to do with the original statement, but more to do with the definitions of Racism) and i am quite suprised that a poster as laid back as foureyes took offence to it (especially given the source) but.. as has been said by him a million times with no one seemingly listening, he doesnt really care about it all that much anymore, he wanted to tell Rog that he knew what he was up to (or felt he was) and would have left it at that, but a myriad of people have rounded on him without ANY justification in my opinion.
I'll give you an example of what i am talking about here:
Peter (and probably Michael) is offended STRONGLY by the word Mong. Now to me that seems fucking daft, or at least it did untill i got to know him and understand why he feels so strongly about it.
I'm not going to lie and say that it now holds that brevity with me, as it doesnt, but i have on more than one occasion asked a poster to remove a post with that word in it, you know why? Cos its the right fucking thing to do.
Now this is basically the same situation, Foureyes is offended by something innoffensive in my/your eyes, but that doesnt or at least shouldnt lessen the way he feels about it, or be swept under the carpet by all insundry. I havnt lived Peters life, i dont know how it must feel, and the same applies to Foureyes here.
Now Rosco to his credit is trying to explain to foureyes that although he may feel hurt and abused by this slur, it isnt racist, and he's right it isnt. But that isnt the issue. The issue is that someone felt offended and not only was no quick apology forthcoming, worse and nastier Jibes followed.
And what has happened since is one of the saddest things i think i have ever witnessed on this site.
Ultimately i can see both sides, and i think Roger is right in that Foureyes should let it go, but lets say that it was Peter in the same situation, would posters such as yourself and Paddy be whoopin and a hollerin everytime Rosco makes a point counter to the original argument that the word Mong is offensive? No you fucking would not.
Like it or not something said on this forum that i feel i have an obligation towards has upset a poster, and i will always.....would always hope that the moral good in us all would come to the fore in such times. Rog would have said 'Im sorry it was a dumb thing to say' and Rosco and Foureyes would have continued their debate about what is racist and what isnt.
And i wouldnt be left with such an unsavoury taste in my mouth.
