actually, i have found the whole thread guite interesting an insightful with regards to people's attitudes towards not only racism but the swinging thing too. I going to play devil's advocate here and suggest there is a certain degree of lack of understanding with the whole racism issue. Its fascinating.

Sorry mate I'm not having that.

If 99% of well educated people disagree with you it should tell you something.

F8ck me your making a mountain out of a molehill.
Don't have it then DB, that's entirely up to you. All i'm saying is that as Rosco said, maybe it's hard to appreciate unless your on the receiving end of it.

And as for the comment about 99% of people, that's just silly. I said only yesterday that every one of the black and asian guys I work with yesterday found it out of order.

I'm not making a mountain out of a molehill. I just find it interesting.

I the p*ss taken out of me the whole time for being, Irish, for being a farmer, for being from outside of Dublin.

The fact is I just laugh it off. There are people in a whole lot worse situations.

And if anyone is going to say something stupid on here( me aside of course ) its going to be Rog.

So just let him play away in his own world.

Your not going to change him thats for sure.

In my opinion the whole world is gone to PC.

It was a joke. ok a bad one but thats all it was.

He should have apologised if it offended you, however I don't think you should have been.

A would have just laughed at his attempt to rise you.

Instead you did exactly what he wanted.
DB, i think you misunderstand me. It offended me at the time. Beyond that, the rest has just been discussion and debate.

I know what he means.

I think that phrase is more common in Ireland.

Still distasteful though and I don't think most would say it.

However as he pointed out earlier I think everyone is racist just to varying degrees to different nations.

For instance most Irish take a dislike at the mere mention of the nation Romania.

I think it would be better to say Paddy that everyone 'hates' to a degree - but to call everyone 'racist' is not right imo.

I can't be a racist anyways, I hate everyone equally.

And as for the comment about 99% of people, that's just silly. I said only yesterday that every one of the black and asian guys I work with yesterday found it out of order.

I'm not making a mountain out of a molehill. I just find it interesting.
We've agreed with you that it was out of order, what it wasn't was racism.

And as for not being on the end of it, have a read through the comments made on this thread about the Irish.

Now to bring issues of nationalism into the sphere of racism you have to construe racism as being a lot wider than the term itself suggests. But that's what you've done, and it's what I would have to do if I was to declare any of the anti-Irish comments on here as racist.

So using the broad definition of racism as laid out in Article 1 of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination :
http://www2.ohchr.org/english/law/cerd.htm

"the term "racial discrimination" shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life."

So can you tell me where your human rights and fundamental freedoms have been infringed ?

Because even if I was to get upset about being called a "spudmuncher", which incidentally has a lot more history behind it than an "onion bahji thrower"., I don't think I could ever argue my human rights or fundamental freedoms have been infringed. (While we were ruled by them cunts across the water they made us grow nothing but potatoes, and when the potato blight set in a famine hit Ireland resulting in the death of an estimated one million people.)

You mentioned the monkey chants in another post too, do you not think given the long history behind it (Apartheid, US Civil Rights movement, slavery etc. etc.) it means there's a whole lot more meaning loaded into a monkey chant towards a black footballer ?

"Onion bahji thrower" doesn't carry any such connotations does it ?

Arguably "Spudmuncher" does because of the history behind it and how the Irish were treated by the English. But I wouldn't ever consider somebody calling me it as a form of racism. It's a crude stereotype, no more no less. It's nowhere near on a par with a monkey chant.

I've been working in the area of human rights for the best part of the last two years Foureyes, mainly immigration and asylum. I've dealt with cases involving non-arab Darfurians, now if you want to talk about racism that's a good place to start. The problem for people like those who have genuinely suffered is the hoops they have to jump through to be granted refugee status. The reason why they have to jump through the hoops is because there are a huge amount of completely false claims. Nothing is more frustrating than dealing with a case when you know legally the person simply can't be a refugee or because they are stretching the bounds of credibility with their story (which is being generous).

So I'm rambling. But the point is that crying wolf in situations like this just makes it harder for genuine cases of racism to get recognised. DB made the point that it's another example of a politically correct world gone mad, and I agree with him.

So to recap, what was said was you throwing a well known national dish in self defence. You've called Roger a racist because of it.

I think that's a complete overreaction and a bit silly to be honest.

Because even if I was to get upset about being called a "spudmuncher", which incidentally has a lot more history behind it than an "onion bahji thrower".

Explain the significance of onion bahji throwing.
As a kid growing up over here I have heard it all. As have my friends and colleagues. Curry muncher, chappati head blah blah blah. They are all attempts to hurt or upset someone on the grounds of their colour and background. Having anything to do with being asian was bloody frowned upon and you generally had the piss taken as a kid or even as an adult. It's an attempt to take the piss out of your ethnicity. That curry munching is something to be laughed at. Or that being brown or eating different food makes you different and inferior and that its ok to be laughed at. I've had it for 37 years. I sometimes go out on the weekends and still get it now.

It's a case of having insults fired at me purely on the basis of my skin colour or my background. I don;t like it. I find it offensive. What you seem to be struggling to see is that I found it offensive and made it very clear to Rog. Now KNOWING that I found it offensive and why, he persisted. That's what really got my goat.

If I did say something to piss you off about your Irish roots and you asked me to refrain, how would you feel if i persisted?

If you told me that you found it offensive and I told you that you were being silly and over reacting and still persisted, how would you feel then?

Most people who suffer racism would view racism as being abusive behaviour towards someone purely on the grounds of their race or colour or background.

Roger joked that you would throw an onion bahji in self defence.

Completely different from what you're going on about.

EDIT: I agree Roger should have stopped when you made it clear you weren't comfortable with it. But in saying that I think you're being very thin skinned.

No it isn't. I think we have a very different definition of racism. Yours seems to be very literal and technical. It's not as clear cut as that. If you asked most people how they view racism, |I very much doubt the majority would give the definition you gave.

I think you're on about racial discrimination. I'm on about racism. Two different things.

That's because they're wrong. They are the PC brigade.

Slagging people off based on cultural or national sterotypes isn't nice, but it's not really racism.

Someone calling you an onion bhaji thrower/muncher or whatever is making reference to the fact that you're of Indian origin.

Someone calling a black person a monkey isn't just referring to the fact that they're black. It brings in all sorts of notions of them being second class citizens, primitive and all sorts of other disgusting notions, simply because of their skin colour.

Onion bhaji thrower doesn't have any such meaning does it ? It doesn't in some way infer that you're some sort of subhuman second class species does it ?

There are numerous examples on the web, but here's one. Read the definition of racism and racial harrassment as opposed to racial discrimination and you'll see what I mean. That's pretty much how I and all of the asian folks I know see racism. Are you saying that we are all wrong?

http://www.ohrc.on.ca/en/issues/racism

Yeah I am.

I take it this is the part of the page that you're referring to ?

Racism is a broader experience and practice than racial discrimination. It is an ideology that either directly or indirectly asserts that one group is inherently superior to others. Racism can be openly displayed in racial jokes and slurs or hate crimes, but can also be more deeply rooted in attitudes, values and stereotypical beliefs.

Here's Roger's quote:

An indian/pakistani who practises Kungfu ? Which stance did you master ?

The 'preying mantis' stance ?

Or do you just throw onion bajhees at your opponents ?

How does that assert that Roger's "group" is better than your "group" ?
