Rodgers came out with an intresting quote today amongst all this Sterling nonsense..

"Liverpool are one of the superpowers of football and the owners have made it clear that money doesn't come in to it. If the club don't want to sell they don't have to. It's as simple as that. Money has never been the objective here"

I wouldn't class us as a football superpower.. we are far from it in terms of becoming a 'Elite club'.. or do I have this wrong.. ?

What for you defines a team as a 'Superpower of Football' in the modern age.. ?

Much as I don't like to say it, I don't think we are.

Financially we do ok, but our recent successes haven't been too recent

We have some of the elements - a huge global following, financial resources (at least potentially) to match and a trophy-winning record bettered by only a few. We aren't currently performing at superpower level, but the owners and Brendan are signposting the fact that our aim is to get back to doing so.

There is no denying the owners are trying to lay the foundations in place.. with the stadium expansion, sponsorship deals, etc.. but until we can start attracting players in the same mould of your UTD's, Chelsea, Barca etc and regulary qualify and compete in the Champions League, then for me 'Superpowers of Football' is a bit of an over statement from Rodgers..

though you have to admire his passion for the club..

Well we do have yank owners, they possibly have access to nuclear bombs. That would make them a superpower in a lot of books.

A superpower for me is a team that has a realistic chance of winning one of the major leagues and the champions league every year. We're obviously not in that bracket.

Damn, I was hoping this topic was going to be about footballing superpowers held by individual players.

Arjen Robben - Diving ability, obvs.

Luis Suarez - Innate ability to nutmeg people even when they are trying to guard against it.

Lucas - Ability to give away needless free kicks with silly fouls just outside the Liverpool 18 yard box.

Jose Enrique - That thing when he gets the ball and spins in a tight circle several times like a car driving in a roundabout.

Hendo - Can sense when a goal is coming which leads to his little hop step.

Andy Townsend - Can interject "in and around" into every bit of commentary whether applicable or not.

Theo Walcott - Ability to snap a hamstring at a moment's notice.

Daniel Sturridge - Able to make hundreds of thousands of dollars a week playing a game he loves and manage to never once look as though he enjoys playing football.

I don't think we are either, id put forward Real, Barca, Bayern, City and Chelsea as the superpowers

We'd be in the next group with Arsenal and United.

I would include UTD in that bracket.. most definatley... no way are we in the same 'group' as United...

City as a Superpower, is open for debate.. They are yet to have the Global Follwing and the success in Europe a force can have...

They do have however the pulling power for players, though it will be intresting how they restructure their ageing squad next season..

John Terry - Wifeysense

Phil Jones - The power to distract opponents and fans by turning his face into a hideous, disfigured troll like metamorphose.

In so far as Liverpool is a world famous club then we'd be a superpower in that sense. I travel quite a lot and we are well represented everywhere; Asia in particular.

In the sense that the club can attract a crowd anywhere whilst touring is also an indicator.

The fact that we increase TV viewing numbers when shown.

The fourth definition would be the ability to recruit and maintain the very best players and that's where our current status slips. It needs to be addressed.
