Sunderland WILL push ahead with a permanent move for Sebastian Coates after the Liverpool defender’s contribution to the Black Cats’ survival.

Coates looked certain to return to Anfield this summer at the conclusion of his season-long loan spell at the Stadium of Light after making just four Premier League appearances prior to the appointment of Dick Advocaat.

Sunderland are hopeful that Coates will be one of the two centre-halves that the Black Cats are looking to sign this summer

But Coates shone during the final six games of the campaign after being given his chance by Advocaat and that has persuaded Sunderland to make a move to keep the centre-half at the Stadium of Light.

Liverpool are looking to offload Coates - who only has a year remaining on his contract at Anfield - for a fraction of the £7million they splashed out in the summer of 2011.

The main stumbling block to any deal is Coates’ hefty salary at Liverpool, with Sunderland only covering a portion of his wages this season.

But with Coates enjoying his first taste of regular Premier League football at Sunderland, the Uruguayan admitted last week that he would be open to remaining on Wearside.

Coates’ form over the last half-dozen games has not gone unnoticed either, with Leicester scouts watching the 24-year-old produce an immense display in the stalemate at Arsenal, which guaranteed Sunderland’s top flight survival.

But Sunderland are hopeful that Coates will be one of the two centre-halves that the Black Cats are looking to sign this summer.

As reported on Saturday, veteran defender Wes Brown is expected to part ties with the club at the end of this month when his Sunderland contract expires.

Sunderland are aiming to sign a replacement for Brown capable of being a first-team regular, particularly with captain John O’Shea turning 34.

The Black Cats have been pursuing Celtic centre-half Virgil van Dijk for the past 12 months and he remains one of the main summer targets.

Celtic have slapped a £10million asking price on van Dijk, even though they are likely to accept a lower figure for a player untested in the Premier League.

But Sunderland have continued to track van Dijk throughout this season after making an approach to Celtic 12 months ago, and are ready to spend a sizeable chunk of their summer budget on the 23-year-old, who is also a target for Southampton, Everton and Arsenal.

Funnily enough, saw some stats that shows he's performed better than lovren

He's not had many bad games for us. I assume he's shit mostly because managers never pick him, but he's always looked alright-ish on the pitch. I think he'll make it in the Premier League for somebody who defends deep and sole aim is staying in the league.

Squiggles: agreed. I suspect he's been a victim of our wider defensive disorganisation which, as a young newcomer, he just hasn't been able to cope with as well as some (not all) of our more experienced defenders have. There's definitely a player there IMO.

[article=http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/sunderland-make-sebastian-coates-move-9438361?]Sunderland are set to make a move for Uruguay defender Sebastian Coates when he returns from Copa America duty.

The Liverpool centre-back spent last season on loan with the Black Cats and, barely figuring under Gus Poyet, he became a key player under Poyet’s successor Dick Advocaat in the final six games of the campaign as the club steered clear of relegation.

Head coach Advocaat has told sporting director Lee Congerton he wants to bring the 24-year-old back to Wearside next season, and Sunderland will test Liverpool’s resolve over a player who has made just six Premier League starts in four years on Merseyside and who is out of contract next summer.

Coates cost the Reds £7m when he moved to England in August 2011, just a month after he was named Best Young Player of the 2011 Copa America after making his senior international debut in the tournament and helping Uruguay win the competition.

He is currently in Chile preparing for the 2015 tournament, Uruguay due to start the defence of their title against Jamaica tomorrow.

By the time the tournament ends on July 4, Sunderland are hoping negotiations with Liverpool will be well underway.

If Sunderland can agree a fee with the Merseysiders, Coates indicated at the end of last season he would be open to staying on Wearside.

He said: “Yes, it is something I would consider if it became a possibility.

“I don’t know what is going to happen yet, I have to go back to Liverpool and then we will see.

“It is good to play and to show what I can do after the manager has had confidence in me.

“Every player needs games and sometimes that is the key.”

Sunderland were understood to be looking for two centre-backs this summer and signing Coates would fill one of those two vacancies.

They have also offered veteran centre-back Wes Brown, whose current deal expires at the end of the month, a new one-year contract.[/article]

Not sure our resolve will need that much testing, to be honest.

[article=http://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/sunderland-afc/sunderland-target-sebastian-coates-moving-closer-to-liverpool-exit-1-7309772]Liverpool are expected to move for Charlton defender Joe Gomez, which could hasten Sebastian Coates’ switch to Sunderland.

As the Echo revealed last month, Sunderland are keen to sign Coates on a permanent deal after the successful conclusion to the Uruguayan’s loan stint at the end of last season.

Coates’ performances during the final six games were a key factor behind Sunderland beating the drop and persuaded the Black Cats to push ahead with a move to keep the 24-year-old at the Stadium of Light.

Liverpool are prepared to offload Coates with only 12 months remaining on his contract at Anfield, with suggestions today that a deal could be struck with Sunderland around the £4million mark.

And Liverpool’s readiness to part company with Coates will only be increased if they make a move for Gomez, with a formal bid expected to be submitted this week.

Highly-rated Gomez, 18, is expected to leave Championship Charlton this summer and Liverpool are reported to be preparing a £3.5m offer.

But there seems to be little prospect of Coates remaining at Anfield after he has made just six Premier League starts since joining Liverpool in a £7m deal four years ago.

Coates, currently with the Uruguay squad at the Copa America, would need to accept a wage cut to return to Sunderland after Liverpool continued to pay a proportion of his salary during last season’s loan.

But the centre-half is open to returning to Wearside after the stark turnaround in his contribution during the run-in.

“Yes, it’s something I’d consider if it became a possibility,” he told the Echo last month.[/article]

£3 million loss better than losing him for nothing I guess.[/article]
