L’Equipe, the hugely respected French media outlet, have today reported that Liverpool are turning up the heat in their chase for Newcastle midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa.
In a short update on their Mercato page, L’Equipe have told their readers:
Under contract until June 2015 with Newcastle, Hatem Ben Arfa is the subject of a new approach from Liverpool. Brought up at Lyon and Marseille, the French international midfielder of 26 years played only six Premier League games as a starter last season.
Whether Liverpool fans would like Ben Arfa to join their club is questionable.
Whilst the Frenchman has a knack for scoring incredible goals, Ben Arfa also considered to be far too injury prone and inconsistent. That said, if Liverpool could get rid of the likes of Stewart Downing to bring in Ben Arfa, most Reds supporters would believe that the quality of their squad would be improved.

They've confused "six" with "sixteen" in that English translation. Doesn't say much for the reliability of the rest of what they say.

My guess is they've told him that, if he signs now (so they get a nice fat fee for him when he does leave) they'll let him go, this time next year at the latest.

That or he doesn't have enough confidence to make the switch from big fish in a small pond to small fish in a big pond.

My guess is that they've given him a fat pay increase and he was suddenly overcome with a feeling of commitment to the 'exciting Villa project'.

Tito Vilanova to step down as Barcelona coach due to continued ill health

Tito Vilanova has stepped down as Barcelona coach after suffering a further recurrence of throat cancer. Barcelona called an 8.30pm press conference at which they were due to make Vilanova's departure official. He will be temporarily replaced by the assistant coach Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia, known as Rubí, who joined the club from the Segunda División side Girona in the summer.
"We inform you that Tito Vilanova needs further treatment which makes it impossible for him to continue as head coach," said the club president Sandro Rosell. A new manager is to be appointed next week.
Vilanova, 44, missed two months of last season after travelling to New York for treatment after a relapse. In his absence the team were coached by Jordi Roura. Vilanova returned for the end of the season, which ended with a league title and Champions League elimination in the semi-finals, but Barcelona held concerns over his medium- and long-term health. Vilanova was determined to continue but a worsening of his condition appears to have made that impossible.
Vilanova first had a tumour removed from his parotid gland in November 2011 and underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy. He returned to work after only 18 days and at the end of the 2011-12 season he was given the first-team manager's job. The news of his relapse broke on 19 December, following a routine check-up carried out at the Vall d'Hebrón hospital in Barcelona on the previous day. Cruelly that was the very day that the defender Eric Abidal, who had suffered liver cancer, finally rejoined his team-mates in training.
The coach underwent surgical intervention and, although he returned to work in early January, he flew out to New York for two months on 21 January. Barcelona were adamant that Vilanova would remain their coach for as long as he wished to continue and resisted some calls to hire a permanent replacement. Barcelona won the league title, equalling Real Madrid's record by reaching 100 points. The title was widely referred to as "the league of Tito [Vilanova] and Eric [Abidal]."
Abidal departed Barcelona in the summer after he was offered a post with the youth academy but not a place in the first-team squad. Vilanova insisted he would continue to coach Barcelona unless doctors demanded otherwise. Although the club had prepared contingency plans and expressed their concerns to the coach, the decision was always his.
Although there are footballing considerations that will come to the fore in the near future, the immediate concern is Vilanova's health. The news comes in a week marked by a verbal conflict between the former coachPep Guardiola and the Barcelona board about Vilanova's illness that threatens to create another divide at the heart of the Catalan club.
Guardiola accused the Barcelona board of using Vilanova's illness to attack him, calling that unexpected and low. Vilanova was Guardiola's assistant and has been his friend for almost 30 years. The Barcelona president, Sandro Rosell, denied that accusation and Vilanova said Guardiola was "mistaken". He also admitted he had been hurt that the new Bayern Munich manager had not visited him during the two months he was in the United States. "Pep is my friend and I needed him," he said.
Barcelona will now begin the search for a new full-time coach, with less than a month before the season begins. A number of potential candidates have already committed themselves to other clubs for the new season, including the former Barcelona B manager Luis Enrique, who is now at Celta Vigo, and the new Athletic Bilbao coach, Ernesto Valverde.
Rubí led Girona to the promotion play-offs last season, only to be defeated by Almería. He is well respected and has a reputation for attention to detail and attacking football.

Oh, I'm sure they have given him a pay increase, but they're gambling on being able to sell him in 12 months' time for more than he'd go for now. They know there's no way they'll improve enough in those 12 months for him to want to stay beyond that.

Ouch. Poor Tito.

Not really what Barca needed either. They've got some work ahead of them this season.

The agent of Lorenzo Insigne has revealed that Sunderland tried to tempt his client away from Napoli.

The Partenopei striker started just 16 times last season, but is expected to step up to the plate this term following the departure of Edinson Cavani.

And the 22-year-old's representative has claimed that the forward will be staying at Stadio San Paolo, despite a move from Paolo Di Canio's men.

“We met with the company to discuss Insigne,” Fabio Andreotti told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“Benitez has ensured us that there is a role for Lorenzo. He likes quality players.

“There was an offer from Sunderland before they made a move for [Juventus' Emanuele] Giaccherini, but Napoli said he was not for sale.”

Quite...

De Laurentiis, who on Tuesday night expressed his disappointment Uruguayan striker Cavani had opted to leave Italy, tempered the news by revealing he has now made 124.5million euros (£108m) available to new coach Rafael Benitez in the current transfer window.

That's a lot of goalkeepers

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has confirmed that the club are keen to sign Hannover striker Mame Biram Diouf as manager Mark Hughes looks to increase his goalscoring options.

The 25-year-old, who failed to make an impact during a short spell in English football with Manchester United is available for around £5m as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract with the Bundesliga club.

Stoke are among a number of European clubs interested in the Senegal international and Coates confirmed: "He is one of the strikers we have registered an interest in."

Diouf made only nine appearances for United between 2009 and 2012, scoring one goal, but has scored 25 goals 49 appearances since moving to Hannover.

Manchester City appeared to be continuing their ambitious summer acquisition programme last night, with Benfica's Argentinian right winger Eduardo Salvio the subject of a €30m (£25.8m) bid from the club, according to several respected sources in Portugal.

City have not yet responded to enquiries about the bid but Benfica are already understood to have begun the task of replacing the 23-year-old. The Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira Ferreira is understood to be asking €40m (£34.4m) though a compromise would appear likely.

Salvio is a similar player to Jesús Navas, the winger, who completed a £17m move, rising to £21.5m in add-ons, from Sevilla to City last month. A pure right winger, he is known for mixing defensive duties with an ability to score 15 goals a season. He played every game last season for Benfica.
