He was desperate to get on the score sheet, wasn't he?

One specific moment has stuck on my mind and it happened just before Wijnaldum scored. Have you ever seen Sturridge run to the corner flag to take a corner quickly?

So why the sudden hustle?
Has Klopp finally got through to him?

He knows he needs a goal. if he stays fit, still have him to get 15 goals (in all comps) by seasons end.

He needs a run of games but I'm not sure he's going to get them. Possibly when Mane goes, though. But maybe not even then.

He ducked out of a cross a before then, presumably because he felt he'd get flattened by somebody. At 5-1 up he was probably sensing a lot of aggression from the defenders and rightly considered that they would greatly wish to do him harm. Perhaps he was in a rush to get to the corner so that he wouldn't need to be in the box himself, then took it short to try and save his friends from being hurt.

I guess he's playing to either prove he's worthy of getting game time in a great team or to provide a platform for a bid from another top team , either way there is plenty of incentive to show what hes made of

He could be a good send come January when we are mane less for a couple of weeks

Lol

I actually think Klopp just said to him, go out there and get your goal when he came on, the whole team looked like they wanted to help Sturridge score, and that's great, as it shows he's very much with the team, and not a step out the door like some seem to think.

The whole team looked like they wanted to help any teammate score the whole game.... Its just the way we play mate!!

He was trying hard to score but I wouldn't say he was busting a gut. He avoided a few 50-50 balls which Firminio would have chased down. But not too concern with that with the state of play by then.

I thought our interplay broke down a bit tbh when he came on.

So many times he could have squared it for a tap in buy he was so desperate to score. He wanted to be on the scoresheet, not necessarily increase the scoreline

I've seen a few people say that now. We created a lot of chances when he came on, hit the bar twice and scored a goal. He was on for 20 minutes and we were unlucky not to bag 2 or 3 more goals.

I personally thought Wijnaldum coming on for Mané had the greater impact on our play, we were always going to lose some rhythm with the subs though.

We attacked differently once Wijni the Pooh and Sturridge came on, but we still created all those chances you mentioned, I find that fact rather encouraging to be honest.

I think it was more of an issue that we then lacked an outlet on the break, so people should then be questioning why the game changed when we lost Mane's pace, as opposed to the introduction of Sturridge. I don't think it was Daniels appearance that disrupted things so much as a combination of a few things.

Competition is good for him. Any move for him, after us now would be a step down. It's been a while since we could say that,

Yeah, maybe, but he might also think "I want to start games every week" and leave for more football. And it might not be a step down, he's still very highly rated, for obvious reasons.

That's happened before, too.

In the league:
  • Sturridge has not scored in eight starts/sub appearances but has two assists
  • Firmino has five goals and five assists in 10 appearances
  • Sturridge's career total suggest an average of six assists per season
  • Sturridge seemingly has lower work rate and is less effective at initiating the press
  • Liverpool are scoring at the same rate as the last time they had a recognised top level striker
Given the above considerations (and they are not the only ones, feel free to add your own); is Sturridge destined to always be just an option in this Liverpool side? How does he get in and stay in without an injury to Firmino?

Origi has only had around a third of the league minutes that Sturridge has had this year, which suggests that Origi is third choice. This could all change if we lose Mané to ACN.

The thread title made me worry for a second that it's a new injury for Sturridge – he busted a gut, poor sod...

I suspect a bit like Can coming in for an injured Wijnaldum and retaining his place after doing well, if Sturridge comes in for any reason, be it an injury or a player suspended/on International duty and does well enough he will keep his place.
