Bit early, but here goes anyway.

Any injury update on Glenjo, Gerrard, and Adam?

My starting XI

-----------------------Reina
Flanagan----Carra-------Agger---------Enrique
---------------Lucas------Adam
--------------------Henderson
-----------Suarez----Kuyt-----Downing

Subs:

Doni
Skrtel
Spearing
Shelvey
Maxi
Carroll
Bellamy

P.S. - Jonjo to start if Adam is unfit!

No injury news yet, Kenny said yesterday that it was too early to rule Adam out. Johnson shouldn't be thrown back in to an away game, our defence has been alot better without him in it. Gerrard is back in a week or so.

------------------Reina--------------------
Flanno----Carra----Agger----Enrique
------------Lucas----CA/JS---------------
-Kuyt---------Henderson----Downing-
-----------------Suarez--------------------

not yet ready to trust flanno after his last performance, he needs time to improve and at an away game he could be a serious liability. I would prefer johnson and skrtel ahead of him.

put henderson in the middle ahead of CA (injured) and JS and put suarez bheind carroll

reina
johnson--carra---agger---jose
lucas----henderon
kuyt---downing
suarez
carroll

Why Flanagan and not Skrtel at RB. He had an excellent game against Bolton, so Kenny might just pick him to start at RB. In this case we may see Cotes on the bench.
Other than this, I think we may see Spearing starting anyway to provide us that extra aggressiveness in MF.
Also, Carroll may also be an asset in such a game due to his aerial power.

I think the message coming out of Melwood is that Adam will be ready, no ?

------------------Reina--------------------
Johnson----Carra----Agger----Enrique
-------------------Lucas-----------------
Henderson------Adam--------Downing
-------------------------Suarez

-----------------Carroll

They are big buggers and so we need our own big bugger.

I'd forgot about Skrtel at RB (good shout and I'd be tempted over Flanno), there's no way I'd throw Johnson in though and I'll guarantee if he plays we'll concede and he'll be a liability. He's not played all season and we generally get a good game off Stoke.

I'm not sure why we're entertaining the idea of Skrtel at RB. He's a CB who played there as an emergency as we didn't have a RB on the bench against Bolton. And whilst he was good against Bolton, he's played at RB previously and looked horrendous. He's a CB (a pretty good one for the most part) and trying to get him to be versatile when we have a perfectly good back-up RB in Flanagan is unnecessary and unwarranted.

Flanagan was caught out a bit against Sunderland but let's not forget how good he was in the 6-7 games he started last season. The kid is quality and has a bright future. Playing a CB ahead of him in his position because we don't have enough confidence in him is sending an awful message to the young players at the club. In my mind, Flanagan's earned the right to play in the first team last season. One jittery display shouldn't change that.

Why Flannagan at right back after Skrtel played well there against Bolton? ??

----------------Reina

Skrtel---Carra---Agger----Enrique

--Kuyt----Lucas---Adam----Downing

-----------Bellamy---Carroll

*Suarez to relax on the bench in the 1st half.

---------------------REina------------------------

Johnson-----Carra--------Agger--------Enrique

Hendo--------Lucas-------Adam--------Downing

----------------Carroll-------Suarez---------------

Kuyt and Bellers on with 20 mins to go. Skrtel for Johnson after 60 mins.

Question is, do we try to match Stoke and adjust our team to neutralize their strengths (i.e. Stoke plays a lot of long-ball, so let's put Skrtel at RB, Carroll up front, maybe Spearing in midfield), or do we try to impose our game on them? There is no right or wrong answer in principle. It entirely depends on how strong and mature "your" game is at the moment.

For instance, Barcelona has an exceptionally strong and mature game; they've been perfecting it for a long time, they know they will be able impose it practically on any team, even at the most hostile away grounds. So the amount of adjustments they have to make for their opponents is minimal. They know that if they just play their game, there is not much the other team can do about that.

That's the ideal we should be striving for. And we are on the right path; Kenny has brought back a recognizable style of LFC football and, judging by how fast the players have caught on, he is exceptionally clear and effective in communicating to the players how he wants them to play. Still, we are not Barca yet; the core of this new team is only beginning to take shape and more then half of our starters we playing for different clubs last season. So, a classic "difficult" fixture like away at Stoke will force Kenny to look for a delicate balance between trusting the strength and resilience of his team's game and being wary of what the opponent can do. And he has to get it just right; overconfidence in your own team will surely be punished (like Arsenal in recent years would always get pushed around at Bolton; Wenger is a classic example of a manager who is preoccupied with his own team and disregards the opposition to the point of arrogance), while adjusting to every opponent (like Rafa at times seemed to do) would make it impossible to nurture and develop your own game, which is after all the ultimate goal. You could say it's a balance between short-term and long-term.

We can make our guesses, but only someone with a real "feel" for the team and intimate understanding of the inner team dynamics can hope to get this delicate balance right. I can't wait for the game; I think Kenny's choice of lineup and tactics might be very telling about how much confidence he has in this team at this stage. And of course the result and the course of events during the match will show if his choice was justified.

I'd throw skrtel in somewhere, he played a blinder against Bolton and he gives us a presence in their box that neither carra or agget can/do.

Reina

Skrtel
Carra
Agger
Enrique
Kuyt
Henderson
Lucas
Downing
Carroll
Suarez

Bench

Doni
Maxi
Adam
Bellamy
Glenjo

Bellamy on for suarez when were 3-0 up with 30 mins left.

As well as Skrtel played at Bolton I still have concerns, he came on to the pitch when we had already had Bolton by the balls. Starting away to Stoke is a different type of game to Bolton at Anfield so I would prefer to be cautious on selection of a right back.

It's hard to tell what way Stoke will line up, I'd imagine they will have Palacios, Jerome and Crouch on the pitch. Bringing in new players straight into the 1st team could be to our advantage, then again maybe Crouch will thrive with Stokes style.

Will be a tough game and we'll do well to get the 3 points.

A bit harsh on Skrtel, it's not like the game was over, we were 1-0 up and they'd come close to scoring through Petrov. Skrtel came on and scored the 2-0 goal that effectively killed the game. I get the point though about needing to be more cautious, but Flanno has looked shaky of late.

If Kelly is still injured i'd play Magic if he's fit.

--------------------Pepe--------------------

--Magic----Carra------Agger---Enrique

If Adam is out i'd probably go with a 5 man midfield because otherwise we'd be very soft in the middle with the options available.

kuyt
gerrard
bellemy
maxi

as options from the bench, that's awesome strength in depth.

I don't see how Spearing instead of Adam softens us ... he is a tougher and better tackler than Adam.

This game is a big, big test. We've started well enough, but getting 3 points at Stoke would be brilliant. A draw would be fine, and I wouldn't be shocked if we lost. But if we win I think I might get seriously carried away.

Sorry i didn't explain that very well. I meant that if we played a 4-4-2 with either combo of Lucas/Spearing or Lucas/Jonjo, then we wouldn't be good enough in this area of the pitch imo.

It's nigh on impossible to break in to the squad when you're younger

He's ok - he was ace against Man City who were playing a big side, so may be similar against Stoke - but Adam would have to start ahead of him if we already have Lucas in the side. We've been playing so well, and there's no comparison with the kind of football they play.

Whos lucas? you're crazy!

I've also never heard of gerrard, owen, fowler, kelly, flanno, robbo, hendo, jonjo, plessis, paletta, etc ad finitum

I'd go for:

.......................................REINA..........................................
SKRTEL...............CARRA..............AGGER...................ENRIQUE
......................................LUCAS...........................................
HENDERSON.................ADAM.................................DOWNING
......................SUAREZ...................CARROLL.........................

If Adam doesn't make it then Kuyt in and Henderson in central. Reason for me to start with Hendo ahead of Kuyt is the latter just having played two games with Holland.

Skrtel impressed me with that RB performance why I'd pick him again for this match baring in mind Delap is going to carpet-bomb our penalty-area with long-throws.
