Did we see him play in his new long term position under Kenny today, or was it just because he was carrying a knock?

I've thought for sometime now that he could do a great in this role + extend his career by a few years at the same time.

I don't know. United were woeful and the CM's had a pretty easy job today - against Parker he, along with Lucas, was annihilated.

Ming did a decent enough job out on the right today in a free(ish) role. I think both Gerrard and Meireles are interchangeable in terms of positions until we sign some proper wide men in the summer.

We're a very flexible side.

There was more than parker that helped cause that!

I thought Gerrard was very average today. As a unit, the midfield was functional, Meireles being the stand-out player with his link-up play with Suarez and Kuyt. Gerrard was anonymous at times though he did the job against a pretty poor United midfield. Lucas as usual was guilty of giving away a couple of dangerous free-kicks outside the box. Say whatever you want to about his improvements this season, but this is a facet of his game he's just not been able to iron out. Which is why it's imperative we get a new DM.

We'll probably see the best of the Meireles-Gerrard interchangeability once that stable DM is brought in. I also hope (and expect) Shelvey to be added to the mix sooner rather than later as well as he's very much a player in the Meireles mould.

As for Gerrard, while his lack of form (and power and drive) seems to be worrying, I do think he has it in him to play the bombing-forward role (at least interchangeably) for the next 2 seasons. Where he goes from there is something we'll have to deal with when we face it.

In the next season or 2 Gerrard will revert to CM once he loses some pace but he'll have to be more disciplined.

I thought he was quiet, then he came into it late on, typical of a player coming back from injury. I get the point though, to get more out of him he may well have to sit back. Meireles is proving a more than able deputy though. He's no Stevie G but he's fucking good.

I thought he did a good job today mate. Not one of his usual eye catching performances, but alongside Lucas he played his part in making sure we won the CM battle.

And it's fair to say, in a big game again, Lucas played really well.

Yup, he was rather good today as well Mark.

Do you think so? I actually forgot he was playing in the first half. Granted he was better in the 2nd and his long range shots seem to be getting back to form.

Wasn't his worst game by any means but plenty more were better. Actually that's a good thing for the club. We beat the top side comfortably without our talisman having *that* much influence.

I think that's harsh Spoin. He protected the back line exceptionally well and when he did, he always looked to run with the ball and set us on the attack.

He's never going to be a bruiser, against the lower sides when we need to put up a fight, he's not good enough, or he usually gets left and isolated anyway, but because he's technically decent, when we play the big sides it seems to work because he'll keep it simple and try to play football.

I'm not his biggest fan but credit where it's due.

I doubt spion was referring to Lucas as our "talisman", haha

SG will be helped also by Charlie Adam and Sanchez next season so he will not have that much work throughout the season.

Yes mate, however i was talking about Lucas in that post 😉.

I wouldn't for one second say that he was amongst our best players today, but i do think Stevie carried out the role he was asked to very well.

lucas was much better than him today. He was a bit sloppy on occasion but he didn't go missing, unlike a mr gerrard who i can't remember being involved in any of our positive play

Yep. Although a couple of shots late on in the game from Gerrard are worth mentioning.

yeah but for me they were like his FA cup final goal. He looked like he was out there because he had to be and thought to shoot rather than run with it. Great efforts, but he seemed very very shite today

Michael Carrick is so underwhelming isn't he?

What a fucking waste of a position. 30 years of age too.

Over 50M on Carrick, Hargreaves and Anderson. Not one of them capable of starting regularly.

BAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

saw a stat saying utd won 10% more of their games when carrick wasn't playing. Think 75% without compared to 62 with

Yep and we moan about £8m spent on Lucas. The above stat kind of puts that into perspective.
