Steve Clarke Sacked

He's a good bloke by all accounts but unfortunately in this media-obsessed age his hangdog countenance and downbeat personality leaves him with no protection at all when results don't go well. He's best suited to being coach to a charismatic manager.

Should be noted though that WBA operate with a DoF system. Their previous DoF, Dan Ashworth left for the FA and his replacement, Richard Garlick was a legal director, having worked as a lawyer specialising in sporting disputes.

Sessegnon, Anichebe, Camp and Amalfitano arrived on transfer deadline. Sinclair has been injured since Sep, playing only 184 mins of league football (cost 1.5m loan fee and WBA are paying 50% of his £52k wages). Both Lugano and Anelka are free transfers collecting their last pay checks - the former being new to the league whereas the latter had emotional issues with the death of his brother cum agent.

Besides Lukaku, they lost Forster to long term injury to. Guess the fact that his contract was ending at the end of the current season probably played a part in their decision to remove him.

I don't know, he's not really been crucified by the press has he? By all accounts, this all seems a bit sudden and unexpected, I don't see the media laying into him as they would with a more charismatic guy, like Di Canio for instance.

Agreed though, he probably is one of those guys who is best suited as a number 2. He did well initially though, so it'll be interesting to see if he drops down the leagues or if he reverts to being an assistant.

I hope he does well either way, he's a good honest guy.

No the national press haven't attacked him, but the local press haven't been inclined to support him much. Di Canio wasn't laid into because he's charismatic, he was laid into because he was a raving loon. I just mean if you're a Holloway, Martinez, Malkay Mackay type, who is happy to chat and reassures the fans it'll come good, you've got more chance of buying yourself a bit more time. Clarke, like Mark Hughes, sounds suicidal when he's won, so that type really needs to keep winning!

But, just take a look at the facts. Only one win in the past 10 games, nine in the past 41 and just 31 points from the last 34 Premier League matches. That's relegation form. Something the ruthless Peace won't countenance after stabilising the club in the top flight for the fourth successive season. He doesn't dither, agonising sentimentally over the current incumbent's welfare.

From the Beeb. Results, highest wage bill in the clubs history and falling out with the chairman in August over transfers. 9 wins in 41 games is awful.

Clarke will do a fine job for someone. I think Macca is right though. Clarke ain't TV-ready.

I was going to point this bit out.

Garlick's failures in the transfer market are the reason Clarke got the boot.

And it was Ashworths work that had them punching above their weight.

Not fucking Clarke and Hodgson.

I'm amazed that you put so much credence in a different job title, but managers you know, don't do much.

The person who buys the players and sorts outs who gets an extension etc is the most important person in the club.

I personally would never let that be a manager because they aren't qualified to do it.

If Ashworth isn't the reason then we need a credible explanation as to why this time last year Clarke was an excellent manager, and 12 months later he got the boot.

Did he suddenly forget all the knowledge that made him great ? Does a manager change that much in a year ? Or are there lots of other factors ?

I mean this time last year some we're saying we should have appointed him over Rodgers when they beat us.

Clarke is the same as he ever was. The West Brom squad is worse because the new DOF is shite. Simples

Last season they had Lukaku who scored 17 goals. That results in points. This season Long has 3 goals.
Lukakus replacement Anichebe has 1 goal.

Surprising decision alright. Clarke was doing a decent job and I don't think there is much chance of relegation. What more do the WBA board want?

Apparantly more than 9 wins in the last 41 games and 31 points in the last 34 games, which is relegation form.

All this calender year bollocks annoys me. A season runs from Aug - May. A run of two or there victories would see them mid table. There are three worse sides in the league.

15 points from 16 games then. 4 losses in a row. 1 win in 9 games.
Its maybe harsh after finishing 8th last season, but its not surprising.
Given that he pissed off the chairman in August you can see why he pulled the trigger now when things arent working.

The potential replacements list makes interesting reading too:
Phelan, who lost his job at United when David Moyes took over as manager in the summer, would be available immediately. Michael Appleton, who Peace regarded highly when the 38-year-old was on the coaching staff at The Hawthorns, is also an option. Appleton has been out of work since his dismissal from Blackburn Rovers in March.
Paul Clement, the assistant coach at Real Madrid, would fit the profile that Albion are after but there are doubts about whether the Londoner, who has ambitions to manage one day, would leave Spain. Martin Jol has been linked with the post but it is possible that after being sacked by Fulham this month he would welcome a short break from the game. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not signed an extension to his contract with Molde, which runs out in the summer, but it would be no easy task convincing the former Manchester United striker to leave Norway.

The baggies should arguably be 5 points better off than they are, like that utter fluke of a penalty against Chelski that robbed them.
I think it's massively knee-jerk, and they're not going to get anyone better than Clarke in at this stage of the season.
Lukaku is a massive miss for them. Shane Long? hahahahahhahahaa
