Depends what your definition of 'do this' is. Can he improve on Hodgson's tenure and lead us back to the right end of the table? Yes, absolutely.

Can he take us back into the Top 4 though? Can he win us the league? It's all very well saying he did it before, but that was a Liverpool team that had been winning consistently for 15 years. His achievement at Blackburn has been underrated, but it's still more equivalent to Mancini's task at City than it is to any manager's at the current Liverpool.

I'm not saying Kenny is definitely the wrong man for the job, but if you put sentiment aside, his CV is not quite as persuasive as some people are making out. As happy as I am that he's back, I do fear that we are headed into Newcastle-dom if he ends up staying on a permanent basis.

Basically I think he'll have succeeded if he can get the best out of our players with the best tactics available.

I don't think we have a very good squad; even if a lot of geniuses like to paste the League table up and say 'surely our squad is better than x position'.

If only it were that simple; for too long our players have looked dispirited, demoralised and outright pathetic...if Kenny can get some belief going it would already be a massive improvement.

It depends on how much he achieves in six months.

I guess alot will depend on where we finish, how we do in the Europa, how well new signings fair and the type of football we play. If we're heading in the right direction at the end of the season then it would only be fair to let him see it through.

Newcastle-dom would be blindly sticking by him because of who he is, despite poor form and then allowing ourselves to go into next season hoping he can turn things around, to then sack him after a couple of months anyway and leave ourselves looking at another stop-gap manager.

Exactly, Mark.

I don't think that's a fair comparison Bunny. Citeh have spent exorbitant amounts on transfer fees and wages, relative to their rivals over the past two years (and do not look anywhere near likely to win the title in truth).

On the other hand Dalglish spent 27m in his three and a half years at Blackburn (taking them from a 2nd Division side to Premiership champions), whilst at the same time Man Utd spent approx 18m to add to a title winning squad.

Put simply, Dalglish, in building a title winning team from scratch spent roughly 50% more than his biggest rival at the time.

City, on the other hand, are spending roughly 1000% more than Utd and Arsenal (+ ridiculous wages) and 300% more than Chelsea (the other big spenders) etc.

I share some of your concerns about a possible long-term appointment for Kenny (though I'm cautiously optimistic), but if backed in the market Kenny has proven himself a very able and astute manager twice over.

Another dodgy pen against us but young LFC keeper Hansen comes up with a great save. Still 2-0!

RT @IMwireman: do you think that Steve Clarke's appointment could be used to entice Andre Vilas to join <- Maybe? A possibility, I guess.

Pacheco just hit the post. Twisted the center back up that much he ended up with his shorts back to front.

It's weird, ever since Kenny was appointed I've felt this unexplainable tingle in my stomach. It's something I haven't felt in a long way, something I used to feel about football when I was a kid, something a cynical part of me has killed a long time ago while top level football has become more and more money driven and boring. This just feels right and everything Kenny does, says etc. feels right. And looking at him in the dugout against the Mancs again felt so right. Maybe I'm seeing what I want to see but looking at his eyes there you could see how much he cares and how he'll do everything to get us back on top. I so want him to succeed and get the job on a permanent basis and at least my heart believes he can do it. I'm not even consulting my brain on this one.

This is exactly how I feel!

Me too. The whole thing has awakened the fantasist in me who I'd thought had died somewhere in the past few years. I'm as giddy as a giddy can be.

Well maybe not that giddy but pretty giddy.

I'm as giddy as an out of control rocket. On the telly.

Ha.

I'm not going to live the rocket thing down am I?

Not that it is a rocket.

Phil Thompson
Gary McAllister
Didi Hamann

I want one of them.
[/quote]

Really? I wouldn't give a fuck if Gary Neville was our new number 2, so long as he was the best man available for the job.

I didn't miss it, but I've forgotten now.

It was funny though
