Sterling's first senior 90 minutes

I know im in the minority but I was more alarmed with Sterling than impressed. Yes he was threatening at times but he was directly responsible for 3 goal scoring opportunties for hearts and indirectly responsible for another at my count. What shocked me was his lack of awareness of his tactical duties and his defending is nonexistent at times. It’s really bad. David Beckham wasn’t the best tackler in the world but at least his positioning was first rate. Sterling has a long long long way to go – he aint even Nani when it comes to working for the team. I’m don’t mean to put the kid down but for me I’m cautious about the hype – he could go either way – remember a guy by the name of Ryan Babel? Well Sterling aint even at his level yet. For all his little glimpses going forward the negatives by far outweigh them. I definitely would not give him a Premier League start. Only playing time I would give him is 2 nil up with 10mins left to play. He needs to be groomed slowly cause he’s definitely a boy playing a man’s game at the moment.
he'll do fine, i didn't really notice about his lack of positioning but i wasn't looking for it so i'll take your word for it, what i did notice is the desire and effort though, even if his positioning was a bit shite he always tracked the ball back down the pitch, even when he was knackered

I don't think it was bad as Glen C made out in the slightest. He did track back, and actually improved in the course of the game in terms of his positioning and play without the ball- something BR commented on after the game, and said he was impressed with.

No it wasn't at all. It looks to me with some people, not necessarily Glen, if you look to find fault you will. OK it could be levelled at me that I have championed this kid from the first clip in a Liverpool shirt I saw. and I look at it through rose tinted specs, but I think I am being pretty objective.
Shall I give you a parallel to this? Tom Ince, I knew he was going to be good, loads of people on here knew he was going to be good, he did not get a fair crack of the whip and his head went down, what fucking idiot thought it would be a good idea to sell him Christ only knows, but trust me on this one if we don't give Raheem his head and proper chances, and by that I mean Premiership chances, he will go and be a star for someone else. Anyone with a hole in their arse can see the lad has got something. Manage his games when he has established himself if we are worried about too much too young, but until then play him or regret it.

regards

I think he'll get his chances mate. He's good enough. It's not about being young though necessarily its about finding the balance between giving him the right experience versus the physical toll on someone whose body is still developing.

No i think sterling will make it as he has talent, i just think that he is getting overhyped as he still has loads to learn and could easily go backwards just as easily. Look at Michael Johnson for example, it happens. Just think he needs to stay level headed, work hard and be determined. But he still has a long way to go thats all i was saying.

I'd have thought he'd come on with 30 to play. Won't he be knackered after thursday? He seemed to do a lot of running.

I could have played every day when I was 17, and was hardly at that level of fitness.
It's not that brave, playing downing would be more of a risk. If he puts Sterling in over Downing that would be A hell if a wake up call for Stuart

regards

Big decision if he does start. The anticipation from the crowd when he gets the ball will be immense, hopefully that gives him more confidence rather than make him shit his pants

I'm not sure I'd have him starting today tbh, but I have to agree with Vlad and the others that that was a bit of an unnecessary post from Glen. Anyone can see that he's physically not there yet, and obviously the tactical side will come on hugely with experience, but he's also pretty obviously improving all the time. Just on Thursday I thought he settled in really well and got much more confident as the game went on. It's OK to be excited from time to time!

Oh and it was a good point about Tom Ince. He already looks like he'd be our best winger if he was still here. I'm sorry, but terrible attitude or not, we fucked up there letting his contract run down. Hope we don't make the same mistake with Suso.

He should be on the bench for games instead of Joe Cole, i'd like to think this would be the minimum he deserves

Some said the same thing about Adam Hammill two years ago when he tore it up at Barnsley ... Moved to Wolves and was very average (being kind here). Ince is doing great at the championship ... Good luck to him, but let's not pretend he's some great talent ... He's not in the same bracket as Suso (or Sterling etc)

We'll see.

Do you believe this is inces real ability, or is it a purple patch? Shelvey tore shit up at Blackpool too, but he sometimes looks out of his depth for us.

Well it's obviously a bit of a purple patch, but I think it's clear he's a PL level player. How good a one remains to be seen, but does anyone really doubt he'd be getting in our squad right now if he were here?

Not sure. I depends if he impressed. Rodgers gives players a go who impress. Would Ince have impressed in the reserves for 2 years?

Honestly I don't know if I remember watching Ince for us, so I don't know if this patch is rare or whatever but he probably would do quite well for us because we're shit on the wings

How was it unnecessary? Everyone was making out that he was brilliant and did nothing wrong. I'm simply stated my opinion that i don't agree and just see him as a raw talent who still very raw who's not as great as people are making him out to be.

He was MOM in his first senior 90 minutes. For a 17 year old, I'd say that warrants a bit of love.

As for being 'a raw talent who still very raw' he has already got more intelligence than Babel. Aged 17 it would be impossible to be anything other than raw, but at least he has some magic in his boots.

I have a goldfish with more intelligence than Babel.

I think it was unduly critical and negative. It's not like everyone doesn't know he's gonna have teething problems or anyone's calling him the messiah.

Whatever, though, it's your opinion and you're entitled to it.

Good game for him today. Does this mean he'll be a regular starter now or will he be protected a little?

Sterling is our Tello. We don't to buy Barca's one any more. What a pleasant surprise.

Aye he had a good game.

It helped that Toure is a tubby little git and also a bit shit. Never the less, given his age he could be some player, he reminds me Aaron eyebrow Lennon with his running style.
