Sterling

I didn't include Sterling in my Man of the Match selection, because I think Naughton at left-back had a very poor game and allowed Raheem to show off his skills.

Me neither, and for the same reason.

In saying that, he played very well and you can only beat what's in front of you.

It was his best game for us by miles, he was working hard tracking back making good runs and getting into decent positions. Thats said his passes are still too heavy at times and decision making needs to improve but hes only 18 so its very much a work in progress. I think Rodgers deserves some credit for pulling him out of the team last season when his head was starting to drop, those are the occasions when a young player needs to be carefully managed. Hes clearly done a lot of work since then and its paying off for him now, hopefully he has done a lot of growing up over the last 12 months.

With Gerrard and Sturridge out injured and Moses and Aspas being shite so far he has the chance to play himself into the team over the next month. Naughton was awful on Sunday and he wont get that sort of freedom against Cole or Zabaletta so lets see how he does, for now its great to have players stepping up and making a claim for places.

We have a small squad relative to the teams around us and to listen to most pundits we are a one man team, so having players like Sterling Allen and Flanagan come into the team over the last 2 weeks and deliver big performances is absolutely brilliant for morale. It shows heads are not dropping worrying about the players we are missing but instead players are dying to get out there and take their opportunities.

The thing is, skinning the FB was not the only thing he did in the game, much as that was impressive (Naughton or naught) some of his defensive harrying play was excellent, and some of his passing was excellent too. That cross field pass to put Suarez in was one example. Indeed, on another night he could have had about 3 assists. That chance for Sakho that he headed onto the post was gift-wrapped with a bow.

Did anyone notice that Sterling is a lot better when he's playing on the right?

Yep, he has for a while hasn't he, and he's not shy of helping out defensively either, which will help alot for him and us. Definitely looks better there and it might force him to fight for it a bit more, rather than just cutting in all the time like he does on the left.

Last season i thought Rodgers could be coaching his natural game out of him, but seeing him get at the full back at near on every opportunity the other day was nice to see.

A lot of times last season Sterling was back to goal in the middle 3rd playing in confined spaces, thats just wrong, the main thing we need from him is to be in space face to goal going at players, preferably having him isolated with a full back, thats when we will see the best of him.

Sterling is not going to face a Naughton week in week out unfortunately, so he needs to up his passing game, decision making and running off the ball, which I'm glad to say he did excellently against Spurs. It's nice to be able to scare the full back a few times a game, but that was about the most inept defensive performance by a fullback I've seen since... Cissokho (hahaha - okay, I've actually seen worse before that I think).

He has diversified his game and that's great to see. Needs to keep showing that.

Another excellent game against Cardiff. And I read a very good interview with him in the Liverpool monthly magazine. He seems to have a very good attitude towards the game, taking extra practice with Henderson and Ibe, not complaining at less playing time, as long as the team is winning. Its also interesting that he states how much Toure has been helping him, suggesting ways he can improve his game. However he has let himself down off the field, he seems to have a decent head on his shoulders regarding his football at LFC.

Cheers for that. Kudos to the lad and the coaching staff (both senior and U-21 level) on the work they've put in to expand his game. Kid used to rely only on his pace and had one signature move in cutting inwards and blasting the ball in from the top of the 18-yard box. Now he's timing his runs behind his man excellently, learning when to go at it himself and when to play in a team mate, and putting in a hard shift in defending. It has to give hope that Ibe, who has a reputation of sometimes being too selfish here, will eventually learn these lessons as well and become a solid player for the club in the future.

very very excited about his development, he is adding goals as well, just what we need from midfield. his tracking back though is really impressive.

Hmmm . . . Sterling has been great against defenders who try to play him at his own game, but I think there's a risk that against the likes of Kompany and Kolarov he will just be muscled aside.

He Beasted kolo last year though.

I think he'll do well. Doubt he'll score, but he'll do well

Also, I'd like to add, why isn't the media sucking his dick? Townsend runs at defenders, scored 1 goal from an accidental cross and is 3 years older, yet he was heralded as the next England messiah

I'm happy Raheem is staying under the radar like, but still, the fantastic southern media hypocrisy strikes again

Sterling was flavour of the month last year. He's not news any more. Why isn't anyone calling Henderson the messiah yet?

IMO Sterling's two major problems have always been his size and slightly underconfident nature. He's much more confident right now, but I worry that ultimately it's something that will always be a bit of a problem for him: I'm sure, for example, that's why he still tends to mess up with his touch when put through on goal. I think it's more that than any lack of technique.

In terms of his strength, I always think people completely miss the point when they cite his tenacity in holding off bigger defenders. It's probably true that he has quite a lot of wiry strength, especially for his size. But the kind of strength a winger really needs is that kind of core solidity, so they can go shoulder to shoulder with full backs without being knocked off the ball. I think that's something he still lacks - hopefully he'll carry on filling out over the next couple of years. He's certainly always been small for his age, so there's plenty of cause for hope there. And as he does physically mature that will naturally tend to give him more confidence to really attack players, so that's another positive aspect.

i think he has a core strength in his low centre of gravity, a la the classic shorter type of dribblers. if he can fill out a bit and improve in the decision making for the final 1/3 he could be awesome.

Thats been the most pleasing thing about the last few games with him along with his end product, hes been a genuine threat instead of a the headless chicken act he was doing.

There is a reason Toure is trying to help him improve his game. If the three of them fucked off home without doing extra practice, then it leaves him with no way to innocently explain away the regular evening canteen service.
