Reina delighted by new contract talk

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina says he is delighted by the news that the club is preparing to offer him a new long-term contract.

Shortly before the Reds’ 3-1 defeat to Fulham on Saturday, Reds boss Rafa Benitez revealed that he would be preparing to offer the Reds’ shotstopper a new deal and sees Reina as part of his long-term plan at Anfield.

“My aim is to get a new contract in the future and I want to be here for many years. Apparently the club wants the same,†Reina told the club’s official website.

“It’s already my fifth season here and that says it all, really. One of my daughters is a Scouser. I have some friends here and my wife and kids are happy. I have every reason to stay longer and of course I will.

“Titles are what we are all here for. As a Liverpool player, you have to have these ambitions. Trophies are the most important thing, and the most important one is probably the Premier League.

“Rafa Benitez is building something special here. He proved that when he came here – the club was one thing and now it’s something totally different. We have grown up and we can still grow up a litte bit more.â€

That is extremely good news.

Top, top keeper and seems like such a good lad too.

Brilliant.

I still dont know how he was the first man to celebrate with Ngog against the mancs.... the man is a nutcase...

top keeper...

PEPE: I'M STAYING TO BUILD SOMETHING SPECIAL
Jimmy Rice 02 November 2009
Pepe Reina insists Rafa Benitez's Liverpool project is still very much on course as he looks to commit his long-term future to the Reds.
Benitez revealed in an interview with Liverpoolfc.tv on Friday that Reina could soon be rewarded with a new deal.

After almost five years at Anfield, the Spain international is as happy as ever - and he is adamant the boss is building something special despite mixed results this season.

"My aim is to get a new contract in the future and I want to be here for many years. Apparently the club wants the same," Reina told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It's already my fifth season here and that says it all, really. One of my daughters is a Scouser. I have some friends here and my wife and kids are happy. I have every reason to stay longer and of course I will.

"Titles are what we are all here for. As a Liverpool player, you have to have these ambitions. Trophies are the most important thing, and the most important one is probably the Premier League.

"Rafa Benitez is building something special here. He proved that when he came here - the club was one thing and now it's something totally different. We have grown up and we can still grow up a little bit more."

The 3-1 defeat at Fulham on Saturday was Liverpool's fifth loss of the league campaign, a stat which has left them nine points behind leaders Chelsea.

But with 81 points still to play for, Reina is confident the Reds can yet mount a serious title charge.

"It's not even close to being over," said the Spaniard, who has made 221 appearances since joining from Villarreal in 2005.

"We have to go game by game. Now we must focus on Lyon, which is massive, and after that Birmingham is a must-win game."

Reina was the man who orchestrated a group huddle before Liverpool's victory over Manchester United a week ago.

He believes such spirit will be key to getting the Reds back on course over the coming weeks.

"All of us have to keep everyone else's head up," said the 27-year-old.

"In weak moments, strong people have to appear. I want to be one of them and support my teammates if they need it.

"The key is to stay together and not read the press. Belief is the word we need to use the most - belief in ourselves and our teammates.

"We were a bit unlucky on Saturday. We didn't play as bad as at other times. It was not even close to our worst game.

"It's a tough moment but we have to stick together and try to sort things out on the pitch and in every single training session. We have pride in wearing this shirt and we have to defend it until the end.

"Any defeat hurts someone with ambition and someone who is hungry for titles. But it doesn't matter how many times you fall down - what matters is how many times you get up and keep trying to be the best.

"That's what we have to do now. We have to go back to our principles, sort out the problems we're having and go back to being the Liverpool everyone wants."

Forget the whole Rafa debate and how shite we are at present mate, our fortunes may yet quickly turn around.

We could well have new owners very soon, which would of course be a huge boost hopefully.

We still have Torres, SG, Pepe, Mascher, Carra, Aquilani, Yossi, Agger, Johnson, Skrtel and Kuyt who i'm proud to see wearing our shirt.

It's not all bad.

The time for reflection will come at the end of the season, but it's frustrating to say the least at present and ultimately these dropped points will cost us. But.... you have to acknowledge that some of the things that have gone on have been beyond Rafa's control.

We're definitely in the middle of a storm, but I don't buy that our 'team' is bad, it's just what's beyond that.

Exactly Mark.

I'm not willing to accept that our season is over yet. If we can get something out of the Lyon game and then close the gap by 5 points over the next 17 games(Chavs v Mancs this sun), then we're right back in the hunt with 10 still to play. Unlikely maybe, but not impossible.

Of course it could all continue in the same vein, but like you said the time to reflect will be at the end of the season.

We're definitely better than what we are now. We're not at full force at the moment, and if we can get some momentum, we have a lot to look forward to. Aquilani, Riera, Agger, have yet to get a proper string of games, not to mention Gerrard. There is yet hope. YNWA.

I can imagine at the end of the season after a cracking run of results, they'll be looking back at our season and pinpointing our early-season mistakes, instead of what character we had to turn it around. Of course, it's all still yet to be.

I'm chuffed that Pepe is looking to stay. Ray Clemence will be delighted as he said that he hopes that Pepe stays for a long time. Let's hope that the lads give us a victory to lift the gloom. A victory is almost guaranteed. Why? Backs to the wall time and we always deliver. Nothing less than a victory will do and we'll be forced to attack.

Everyone who's old enough shudders to remember April 1989 and the Arse's last-minute goal at Anfield to take the title from us. What most forget is that we had closed a gap of NINETEEN POINTS to get to the top of the league in the first place.

The night is darkest just before the dawn.

Fucking hell, I remember the game but don't remember the points. That said I was only 7 😉

On an unrelated note, when did it change to 3 points for a win?

Oh, and out of interest, does anyone know what the league standings were as of 15th April 1989?

I just wonder what would have happened were it not for the back log. I think we all know though...

I'm sure that was back in the early 1980s, though it had been talked about for some time by then.

Indeed. Actually winning it the following season meant a great deal. Time we did it again. 8)

Quite right JJ.

Unfortunately that game is one of the first memories that i have as a Liverpool Fan.

We've got another 81 points to play for, so i don't see the point in giving up just yet mate.

It's interesting that Reina feels comfortable completely contradicting Rafa's comments about success having nothing to do with trophies.

great keeper and excellent news. i also like his mentality - the lad knows how to measure success.

But with 81 points still to play for, Reina is confident the Reds can yet mount a serious title charge.

"It's not even close to being over," said the Spaniard, who has made 221 appearances since joining from Villarreal in 2005.

Love him!
