So who do we want/expect/hope?

It will be July 4th before we get everything sorted! Why? Because it gonna be Independence Day!
You hear it first from this site!

LOL, just reading through the last few pages! Why are people getting so worked up about that picture? Thanks to Whelan we've known for ages that Martinez is a candidate and would be meeting with Henry in Florida, then people see a picture of the two of them in Florida - having a meeting - and all hell breaks loose. Mental.

It's a case of mass hysteria. Like when a load of women in Southern Europe all see the Virgin Mary. 🙂

Exactly so

Steven Beacom: Swansea City manager Brendan Rodgers the man for Liverpool

Liverpool’s search for a new manager has become a total embarrassment to the proud name of the football club.
Every day it seems to get worse with a new name thrown into a pile which includes people who should only be allowed inside Anfield while on a stadium tour.
Just about every manager bar Sir Alex Ferguson has been mentioned as a possible successor to Kenny Dalglish, who was shunted off the scene a season too early.

It has begged the question from just about every Kopite: Do these American owners have a clue what they are doing?
Answering their own question, most fans would say no.
That’s why official supporter groups have been writing to John H Henry demanding to know what direction the club is taking.
Road to nowhere, perhaps.

The ruthless way Henry and the Fenway Sports Group (FSG) dealt with the legendary Dalglish was bad enough, but the scattergun approach in finding a replacement has turned into a joke that only those with no love of Liverpool are laughing at.
They have had a long list and are now working their way to a shortlist. It’s all taking time that would be better spent with a new boss already in place working on plans for what will be a massive season for the Reds.

They can either catch up with the Champions League teams above them or fall even further behind Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea — the latter is unthinkable.
FSG’s plan is to have an experienced figurehead in place as the Director of Football or Sporting Director with a young, vibrant boss working in tandem alongside him.

Former Barcelona coach Txiki Begiristain was earmarked for the ‘upstairs’ role. Now ex-Barca and Holland boss Louis van Gaal is also in the running for it.
Two fine footballing men but ultimately it will be the manager who will decide if Liverpool can go forward or back. And that from the list of candidates has to be 39-year-old Carnlough man Brendan Rodgers.

You may say ‘but he has already turned it down’.
Not exactly.
Last week Rodgers said no to Liverpool, but what too many don’t get is that he said no to being offered the chance to be interviewed about the job feeling it would be wrong to be seen chasing another post while he was already in one — at Swansea City.
See, there is honour in football.

Rodgers, whose Swansea side defeated and drew with the Reds in the season just gone, has not turned down the chance to manage Liverpool.
If he was offered the job, and felt the owners were going to give him the tools required to re-build the squad and confidence in the ranks, I believe he would happily become the new Liverpool boss.

And the club could do with him as he would instantly bring composure, creativity and a much needed touch of class to the club.
Rodgers also has the personality and just as important a genuine sense of Liverpool’s history to get doubting supporters onside in a way that other contenders such as Wigan boss Roberto Martinez and failed Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas could not.
FSG ought to offer the best young manager in Britain the job of getting Liverpool back on track and do it soon before this embarrassing episode escalates further or someone else snaps him up.

I've decided I want Rodgers as manager based purely on the fact that he's from Carnlough.

It's a well know fact that noron irish managers win things and managers like Rafa consistently struggle at the top level.

Ask Doc & Refugee, they know.

I said pages back that Rodgers was the guy I thought was best amongst what was, lets be honest, a fairly thin lineup.

It's not based on anything really concrete TBH but just a belief that he's a tougher character than AVB or Martinez. I would personally go the opposite way to Jules and take AVB ahead of Martinez for the simple reason that he has proven himself capable of winning domestic and Euro titles. I know the detractors say he had a fabulous Porto side but there are plenty of fabulous sides that don't win the league and many more who never get near a European final let alone win it. His performance at Chelsea was very worrying but I think he offers more than Martinez.

Rodgers doesn't offer title winning credentials but there's a tough streak that comes through when he's being interviewed. I like the way he turned down the offer to interview but not the role; savvy and clear minded. His performance at Reading was pretty poor though I heard there were mitigating circumstances; not sure how true that is. What can't be denied is the way he's got that Swansea team playing; it's outstanding. I don't think we've got the team to do that at the moment but I reckon he'd do wonders with a team similar to the one we had 3 years ago.

All that said, what is this tripe about the embarrasment of the search for a manager? It hasn't dragged on nearly as long as the search for Rafa; have Chelsea appointed a new manager yet - they're the CL champions and should be able to take their pick, surely? I'm not a fan of the interview to interview approach - Ayre etc should know enough about the managers available to know if they're a potential fit for Henry to speak to. That said, I'm pleased they're taking a measured approach and, while I think Van Gaal is close to psychotic I could see him being a good head for a young coach. Plus he's got the right footballing approach, IMO, to win the league.

Yes, good post from Wiz. And since I used to quite like stopping in Carnlough for an ice cream when I was a kid, I'm also coming around to Rodgers.

No, bellends like you who moan about FSG's search are the embarrassment Steve, whoever you are.

I'm not sure it's become an embarrassment. We're looking for the right manager and taking time over it. These same idiots will be posting incessantly in a few months if we shotgun into it and it goes tits up.

As I posted earlier in the thread. We sacked Houllier 24th May 2004 and didn't get Rafa until the 16th June with weeks of a will he/won't he and tonnes of speculation.

What an embarrassment we were.

Guardiola has confirmed he is open to offers.

Guardiola open to job offers

Outgoing Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola has given Liverpool and Chelsea hope by confirming he is open to approaches this summer.
Guardiola will step down as Barcelona chief at the end of this campaign, and it was expected he would stay out of the game for at least a season in order to rest.
However, the Spanish manager, a reported target for the Anfield and Stamford Bridge clubs, has revealed he is willing to return to football sooner than has been anticipated.
"For the next month I have to charge my batteries," he said. "I will rest and I will wait. I will be ready, if one club wants me, if they seduce me, I will train again."
Guardiola won three successive La Liga titles at Camp Nou, lifting the Champions League trophy in 2009 and 2011, as well as subsequently winning the FIFA Club World Cup on two occasions.
He revealed last month that he was to leave Barcelona, citing the stress-inducing pressures of the top job at one of the world's leading clubs. Assistant Tito Vilanova will take over from him next season.
Champions League winners Chelsea are expected to have a better chance than Liverpool of enticing Guardiola, with owner Roman Abramovich reportedly an admirer.
The Reds, who are in talks with Wigan manager Roberto Martinez, are likely to be keeping a keen eye on the situation, however.

Now Guardiola under a DoF is a much more appealing prospect.

Apparently pep met with ancelloti & spoke to him about the premiership & got glowing reports.

He'll go to Chelsea, for about a half a billion a year.

Why the fuck would you be disappointed?

I have a lot of time for Guardiola and he said he was leaving Barcelona because he needed a break from football. If he rocks up at Chelsea a month later, it'll leave a sour taste in the month.

Of course I would be less bothered if he rocked up at the Shankly Gates but we all know there is as much chance of that happening as Ferguson driving down the M62 and offering to restore us to our former glory.

People keep telling me how well Martinez did considering the resources he had and that his best players kept getting sold.... But these aren't the kind of things you should be looking for on the CV of a guy taking over a club with the resources of LFC.

If I wanted to take someone on to grow one of my businesses I'm not talking to someone who managed to keep the bailiffs away from some little piece of crap for a few years, even if he defied the odds doing so. He might be good at growing a business - but he hasn't demonstrated that and if I'm paying top dollar I want someone who has.

I'd have thought that was fairly basic.

Even if it was going to happen, the appointment of Pep Guardiola as a Premier League manager would be far more risky than the appointment of Roberto Martinez!

From Bossing the best football side on the Planet to trailing 2-1 to a Fat Sam Allardyce team.

How the mighty have fallen..
