Slot-ball

Our possession in general should be higher but we haven't been great in several games, with all sorts of loose passing. I doubt slot is satisfied with that part of our game.

We still press, but without our back line being quite so high. This means we don't give the other team huge, simple chances on the counter as often from poor passes, but we also gain possession back slightly less frequently. That part is a good trade.

Good points there. I agree about the absence of an insanely high line being probably a good trade overall - but I feel even with that taken into account our pressing could be better. I don’t think we’ve reached anywhere near the best pressing displays under Klopp so far - maybe we don’t have to do it all the time, but it’s essential to have it in our arsenal. We’re more balanced and hard to penetrate now, but a fear factor for the opposition also has to come from somewhere.

I think being top of the table and having won 10 / 11 is a bit of a fear factor in itself , no ? 😉

We don't kill teams off in the way we used to at our peak. I think we'll need to replace one or two players to try and get back to that.

It's possible that part of the reason possession is lower so far is because we spend much more time leading in games.

Sorry but I don't know how to link from another post. But here goes the old copy and paste:

That's been the story for everyone though. Every time I watch match of the day about 80% of the goals conceded are because someone loses the ball trying to play it out from the back. All these shite teams at the bottom half of the table think they're Barcelona and it's becoming mad. At least that new keeper we found on the bench yesterday knew how to kick it out eighty yards.

Now I hate Mourinho, but one interesting thing he did say while he was at Chelsea and he was getting shit for not having much possession was he chose to give the other team the ball and wait for them to fuck up. It's the easiest way to create chances.

‘We want to win everything’: Tsimikas outlines Liverpool’s ambitious target

  • Left-back praises Arne Slot’s coaching
  • ‘He asks us to defend together as a unit’

Kostas Tsimikas has said Liverpool are targeting a clean sweep of trophies under Arne Slot after last season’s FA Cup defeat at Manchester United“destroyed everything”. Liverpool continued the outstanding run under their new head coach with a Champions League victory at Leipzig on Wednesday, establishing a club record of 11 wins from the opening 12 matches of a season.

On Sunday is a visit to Arsenal, when they would open a seven point gap over their hosts with a seventh successive victory on the road. “It’s too early to speak about [making a statement against Arsenal] but our goals at the start of the season, we said we wanted to win everything,” Tsimikas said. “We will go to Arsenal to play our football and to win the game.

“Last season, at the end, we destroyed everything after one bad result against Manchester United. In the next fixtures we were not the team we were before but we have tried to work game by game and every game is a final. We try to do what the manager is asking to win games.”

Liverpool had designs on ending Jürgen Klopp’s reign with a quadruple before their dramatic quarter-final cup exit at Old Trafford, when United punished chaotic defending. The team have seven clean sheets under Slot, conceding six goals, and Tsimikas believes the head coach’s instructions have been key to the improvement.

The left-back said: “We defend all together. One of the goals of the new manager is he asks us to defend all together as a unit, as a team.
“We don’t want to concede. Everyone defends, everyone attacks and everyone wants to do even more. We’re hungry for more.

“I enjoy it very much [under Slot]. They work on every kind of detail and want you to improve. They are always there for you, even the manager and technical staff, to help you do the right stuff for the team. The things the manager wants from me, I am very happy to work with him.

That's been the case for at least 2.5 seasons though, although doesn't make it wrong. We do need to just get things wrapped up and learn how to do that.

Careful Kostas - DB will remove you form his MOTM nomination if you speak such heresy

My main gripe is how slow we start so many games. Its like we're practically pedestrian at times and just invite trouble. Its like it takes us 20 mins to warm up.

I think its more that we start the game with controlling it as much as possible.

It's not a revolution, it's the failure of an experiment.

If you put this same trent in the same situations as the last two years over and over again, he'd have far worse stats. It's not just an individual thing. Another big part of this is him not being so bulky. He made himself slower.
