As I understand it, the entire idea behind the inverted full-back tactic is that you have a player who is so tactically disciplined that he can cover 2 positions at once depending on phase of play. When folks were saying how Trent can potentially be better than Stones and Zinchenko in that position, they kind of missed being tactically disciplined part - roaming around the pitch is NOT the same as covering 2 positions, in fact it’s kind of the opposite! This is why you actually need a Stones type, rather than Trent type, to make it work.

Fair point. Trent's near unlimited skill in way limits his efficacy in this system.

Related to this are Joe Gomez’s numbers:

I think a big reason for his improvement is being allowed to engage in duels further up the pitch, where a lost duel does not automatically lead to a goal-scoring chance - this seems to suit his personality as he doesn’t overthink and just goes for it, trusting that someone will mop up for him if he’s not successful. When he’s the last line of defence, Gomez tends to become timid - not everyone has the natural confidence of a Van Dijk. I think Gomez is actually more suited to the inverted RB role than Trent due to his greater positional discipline and ball-winning aggression.

Lest anyone thinks I’m having a go at Trent or being harsh, nothing could be further from the truth. I mean, just look at this:

Mere mortals cannot do this. Talk about turning defence into attack - this is just scary good, an interception and a perfectly weighted through-ball combined into one touch. Trent needs to focus on this full-time and let Gomez or someone else think about positional discipline and containing opposition wingers. These are two different jobs requiring different skillsets and mentality - so why not just let everyone do their own job!

His renaissance has been great to see.

I must say I'm largely done with the inverted fullback system. Results have been good this season, but I never really get the feeling it's down to the system but more a player pulling something out, usually late on, and the squad mentality which has been fostered early by those early red cards and VVD and Trent stepping up to captaincy.

Against West Ham we looked so much like the Liverpool I've grown to love under Jurgen Klopp. Gomez is smashing the RB role, Trent is looking extremely effective in the centre. If we can get Trent and Szoboszlai into one midfield then we will have something special. I think Klopp needs to commit to it at this point.

Helped that Moyes team never travel well against the top 6.

It's not that simple in the modern game. Few if any clubs, and certainly no top clubs, are going to have one single first choice MF three.

I do like what he's doing for the lgbtq+ community here

He actually looks very much like a Duty Manager I employed once - who was absolutely fabulous and camp as fuck.

One of my truly most enjoyable moments in my old pub was one Sunday afternoon working with him, when literally one half of the pub was piled full of AFL fans screeching at the TV - if I use the word “Bogan” anyone who’s been to Australia will understand - the other half (and it literally was 2 rooms, wall down the middle, bar in the centre) was filled with a pile of people going to a Kylie Minogue concert at a venue literally 50 meters away. - you can imagine the crowd - they were all fabulous.

So we split the sound system and had game commentary blasting out one side - and a selection of Kylie & ABBA bangers blasting out the other side.

It was brilliant - and he had a ball.

So many surreal moments in that pub!!!

Dear fellow fans!

As a Hungarian fan, I would like to recommend our video below, in which we covered a Szoboszlai song and You'll never walk alone.

We hope you like it! 🙂 Thanks! YNWA

Nice to have a Hungarian on the site, I think it's a first TBF.

And as for Slogo.. what a signing he has been .

Note notice I didn't write his full name, I cant pronounce it let alone spell it .

I might be cruel and add it to the Q/A Captcha when peeps try to register.

Great Anti bot solution..

Bet Hungary play him every min of every game over the int break, hopefully we can tell them to be sensible and let him rest.
