Sevilla at Fenway

That was assault.

Surprised the reaction of our players was so muted particularly as that prick continued to protest.

Needs his head kicked in.

Kent's directness and pace does seem to make him the closest thing we have to a Mane/Salah type forward.

Some random thoughts:
  1. I kept thinking if us playing in a black kit and Sevilla in white under that sun (especially in the first half) was an actual disadvantage. Just a few extra degrees of heat could make a lot of difference.
  2. Kent never convinced me as a winger, but he does have some admirable qualities. I wonder if he would be better off as a CM in the Gerrard mould. This way his forays forward would be less frequent and perhaps more effective.
  3. Gomez was boss; I feel he's very determined to try to dislodge Matip from the the starting CB place. They are both great at bringing the ball forward out of defense and thus complement Van Dijk very well.
  4. Woodburn was disappointing; didn't do much that was useful at all. After the water break in the 1st half, Klopp switched positions between him and Ox, but neither seemed to do any better – and Ox barely escaped with his legs intact after a bad challenge near the end of the half.
  5. Speaking of this, did Sevilla players know it was a friendly? They were so bad-tempered I felt it was only a matter of time before one of our players got injured; hope Larouci's OK.

Any updates on the kid? lets now even call that a tackle because it wasnt. It was a deliberate foul

Klopp said doctors told him the kid is "lucky." They are waiting to make sure he's indeed OK.

BTW the Sevilla player when to Twitter to apologize. Not that it's going to save him from a Van Dijk or Milner bone-crunching tackle if he ever crosses path with us again.

a) How was the game sir? Just watched highlights ... I know it's preseason and we're missing a lot of players etc, but the last two games have left me with a wee bit of concern.
b) that foul was brutal and I hope whoever organizes the tourney bans sevilla for ever participating unless they ban him for 3 league games. Fucking cunt.

Hard to draw too many conclusions from these yet given we aren't yet starting any of the periods with many partnerships you'd expect to start the season. I'd like to see us start one with a likely midfield trio (3 of Fabs/Gini/Hendo/Ox) and VVD + Matip/Gomez at the back. But maybe we aren't ready for that yet.

Would love to know what Klopp is targetting for the Community Shield. I think he'll start at least 1 of Wilson/Kent/Brewster and maybe play Ox in the front three for some experience against City. Firmino maybe a sub, Mo & Mane not in that squad.

I highlighted individual performances in an earlier post. Overall, we were outplayed for most of the first half, lots of sloppy passing forced by Sevilla's aggressive press. Controlled the 2nd half without creating too much, Sevilla's multiple subs disrupted their game. After the sending off we tried to find the winner and got caught on the break.

I wouldn't be concerned about anything long-term, the balance is off since our whole attack is missing and our gegenpressing doesn't quite work when everybody is knackered from training. The only useful information to be gleaned from these games are the youngsters' performances, IMHO.

These games have no value other than conditioning and fitness prep for the coming season. Am not bothered by the results, but I really pray and hope that kid is OK.

In a way a bunch of the kids experiencing such a feisty game might not be a bad thing (excluding that tackle) if we want any of them to be pitching in at the start of the season. Much better get the shock of heated and high intensity games in pre season than when it matters.

He can stick his apology where The Lying Rag doesn't shine. As Van Dijk said after the game that challenge says something about the player. Deliberately attempting to injure, or at the very least hurt a very young player in a pre-season game is dreadful. Absolute cunt.

Yup and yup.

Anyone think Lonergan is getting a contract? I mean we might need a third choice keeper for at least the start of the season.

I'd add that the overall reaction from the rest of the Sevilla team demonstrated endemic cuntishness in the lot of them.

I was surprised that he started. I understood that we chose him just to reduce the workload on the other two GKs when players are training and just pinging shots at someone in goal. I think it was a waste to give him game time when Mignolet or Atherton could have had some more useful minutes.

On point 2 there is potential for kent. He has the ability to carry the ball forward and with a turn of pace. Ox can play that role but has looked pure in pre-season. Makes you think if had a player of kdb quality in the middle and how our game would be transformed.
