Semifinal #2 Messi & the Argenauts vs Divey, Greasy & the Krul Klux Klan

From the beeb:

Arjen Robben attempted just one pass in the first half against Argentina.
Lionel Messi did not touch the ball in the penalty area during the 120 minutes.

I get that, but those games are few and far between where we would need a Mascherano to be man marking a player

What about the rest of the games? He's a top level player but you need to allow for his limitations in your team, and we already do that with Gerrard

I think with him being so good at that job we could flip the triangle round (if we dont play a diamond) and have a much more attacking formation because of the reliability/trust in him. At the moment, gerrard is a bit of a liability there, he's great at attacking and spraying hollywood balls, but you'd think he'd be even better at that if he was freed up from defensive duties and could more a little more forward.

Gerrard is a bit of a liability wherever you put him but he does enough Gerrard stuff to allow for it cos he's Steven fucking Gerrard. We carry him in the team the same way he carried us through a lot of the 00s but if it was anyone else other than Gerrard, no way would Brodge cater for it

All CMs in our system have defensive duties - it's just in different parts of the pitch, different types of responsibilities and it all has to be done in tandem. For example, if Henderson is pressing and Coutinho or Sterling is not, the ball will just leave the area of pressure and flow to the area of no pressure, defeating the initial press altogether.

And that is the problem we had for the first one and a half seasons under Rodgers when Gerrard was playing further up. His declining pace and energy meant that opponents pass him by easily, and he wasn't able to exert much resistance when they'd overlapped him because he was unable to draw upon his reserves to make up the distance. He couldn't press like a mad dog too, unlike Henderson or Sterling. He can do it now and then, but not on a regular basis. It's no mystery that we were sliced open down the middle in Rodgers' first season so easily. Some folks attribute it to Lucas' limitations, when IMO, it was often Gerrard's inability to defend higher up that was the root cause of the problem.

Placing him at the base of the triangle allowed him to assume a more sweeping role in midfield, leaving the high energy presses to the younger legs of Henderson, Coutinho and Sterling etc. I feel pretty strongly that if we push him back up a rank, we're basically just undoing all the good work we've done in midfield last season.

I wonder if Maxi Rodriguez still has an affinity for LFC?

Mascher seems to have enjoyed his time in Liverpool but I have no idea about how Maxi feels about the club.

If Argentina win it it wont matter if Messi has another dud of a game in the final, the narrative will still be about him.

Remember mentioning on here how impressive Garay looked during Benficas run to the EL final, hes carried that on during this WC for the Argies where he has been class.

Just checked out how much Zenit paid for him this summer, wait for it............................ 6 million euros! what an absolute steal, ridiculous.

Reposting what cloggypop shared in the Confirmed Transfers thread about this move.

€6m is of course Benfica's cut of Garay's transfer. They only own 40% of his rights. Real Madrid own 50%. Third-party 10%. €15m in total.

Ah i see, did think 6mill was ridiculous, that is still a decent price for him though.

Possibly also because it was the last year of his contract. From Wiki:

[article]On 5 July 2011 Garay transferred to S.L. Benfica in Portugal, for a fee of 5.5 million. for his services, and he signed a four-year contract - initially a part of the deal that sent Fábio Coentrão in the opposite direction, he eventually signed a separate deal. Real Madrid also remained eligible for 50% of any transfer fee Benfica received in the future, and the latter also sold part of his rights to Benfica Stars Fund for €1.175 million, making the club owner of 40%.[/article]

So his contract with Benfica would've expired on 5 Jul 2015.

So many transfers seem to be so clouded and complicated nowadays.

He struggled at Madrid when he was young didn't he? not that that really matters, he's a really good defender and whisper it quietly but Demichalis has done a great job since coming into the side.

Mascherano on that tackle: "“In that movement I opened my…(points to anus), that’s why I was in such pain. I don’t want to be rude, but that is what happened.’

Masher put in the best defensive display I can remember in a World Cup since Paul McGrath against Italy in 94.
He was simply amazing in every aspect of the game

Something has to be lost in translation there, he stretched his butt hole in the tackle? First time I've heard of that one.

I can't believe this is real - because no one made a fuss of it during the kicks ... but if it is, - that was close:

It actually could be. As you can see in this close up, Ron Vlaar did seem to wait for it, notice it, and turn away in disappointment. However, the ball came very close to him on the rebound and might have touched him too, which I think, if it did, would've cancelled the goal even if the ball went in?

Really close though like you said.
