Semifinal #2 Messi & the Argenauts vs Divey, Greasy & the Krul Klux Klan

The Mascherano stereotyping myth has been laid to rest. He has been the midfield general all tournament holding the Argies together. We would have done well to get him back.

You have to feel Krul would've fared better in the shootout but I don't buy this using him as a substitute malarkey. Cillessen may be their number one but if he's noticeably better than both Krul and Vorm then I haven't seen it over the course of this world cup. Van Gaal knew de jong wasn't fully fit and there was a chance he'd have to hook him, leaving only two changes. If one of them is a keeper switch that you're saving then it doesn't leave you much to change tactically over the course of 90, never mind extra time. Surely it would've been easier to start Krul from the get go. We all know he's capable after seeing him have fantastic games for Newcastle. Hindsight's great though innit!

LVG not being billed as the genius now innit! Krul's consistency should have got him the nod. Never heard of Cillesen before but what do I know?

I think the dutch would have lost regardless of who was in goal for them. Hard to expect two saves from your keeper in a shootout, and none of them were particularly easy to save. Even Maxi's was absolutely smashed, and would've taken iron hands to keep out of goal.

Coming off a good season with Ajax.

Interesting to see how Stekelenberg has completely dropped off the radar since moving to Roma and now Fulham. I kinda expected him to at least make the roster.

Yeah hard to see it I suppose but Krul's definitely more imposing and intimidating so even if he only got to one of them it puts extra pressure on the argies, ah well all done and dusted now. He's still only 26 too...be good competition for Migs 😉

Mascherano - all he does is tackle, the rest of his game is woeful, etc. What a crock of shit.
It's astonishing how some Liverpool fans under-value our players. Mascherano is a fabulous player to have on your side. Benitez should have tried harder to keep him at Anfield.

Maybe he would have if he hadn't been sacked a couple of months before.

Mascherano didn't suddenly decide to leave after Benitez was sacked. Hodgson certainly wouldn't have wanted to go - in fact starting the season without Mascher was a major contributor to his disastrous spell as manager. It was only Mascherano who had been holding things together the previous season.

I think the straw that broke the camel's back, was Benitez leaving. Not that Rafa wasn't already proving instrumental in the breakup of Liverpool's side, it was just the end of an era and an accumulation of different factors - the owners, Hodgson, Rafa, etc. Masher was far from innocent either, I'd still have him back though.

So what specific things do you think Rafa should have put in place to help prevent Masherano wanting to leave?

He could have established a better personal relationship with him, the same as Rodgers does with his players. Rafa was always a hopeless man-manager. He goaded Alonso into leaving because of his infatuation with Gareth Barry.

Surprised Depay didn't play any part. I suppose he wouldn't have had space to run into with Argentina trying to maintain their shape. Is Depay all about his pace? He looked technically good anytime I've seen him. @cloggypop ??

Argentina allowed Dirk have a lot of the ball and he was wasteful with it. Cutting onto his right every time.

Ron Vlaar was excellent. He looked the player Villa hoped they were signing. Can they keep him now? Surely his agent will get a call or two checking availability.

Happy the Dutch are gone. They are effective on the counter but didn't show much imagination when they needed to play through a packed midfield and defense.

That would have been really useful when Mascherano was in Liverpool and Benitez was in Milan.

I did not see much PSV at all last year so no idea. He seems to be the new Dutch hope so he must have more to him than pace. Cocu seems to think he needs at least one more year in the Eredivisie.

Mascherano had an amazing game last night. He probably shouldn't have played very much of it because it looked certain he got a concussion but for whatever reason no one seems to care about brain injuries in football.

Either way fair play to him after being allowed to reenter the game he was immense, completely bossed the game. His tackle on Robben in the box was one of the tackles of the tournament.

Has anyone seen an explanation as to why Concrete Ron took the first penalty? I've no idea if he has even attempted a penalty in a match before but it seemed a very odd decision.

EDIT: Nevermind after a quick Google search it seems as though Big Ron was the only dutchman with the huevos to take the first penalty.

"I asked two players ahead of Vlaar to take the first penalty," van Gaal told Dutch news agency ANP.
"They refused. Vlaar in my view was our best player. Unfortunately he didn't score," the Manchester United-bound coach added.

Fair play to Vlaar.

Van Persie had a brilliant game against Spain, and then disappeared.

Everyone had a brilliant game against Spain. That Spanish capitulation was ridiculous. Casillas spent most of the game crawling along the floor. I haven't seen Spain countered like that in years.

How do we see that? LVG exonerating himself from blame or telling it like it is?

My word did he ever.

It was assumed that he coasted the last half of the premier league season in order to be fit and firing 100% for the World Cup and after the Spain match it looked as though he had laid down a royal flush with that play. Since then however, he has completely dropped off the face of the earth. The last two matches he has looked as clueless as current day Torres.

With the added caveat that the Dutch were 4/4 in their penalty shoot out against Costa Rica and looked 100% confident. Granted Van Persie took the first against CR and he was on the bench. I would assume if Van Gaal is telling the truth, that he would have asked Robben or Sneijder to take the first penalty. Even still I would have rather had Kuyt or Huntelaar take the first penalty instead of Vlaar no matter how confident he was.

He was fucking brilliant yesterday, had robben in his pocket and singlehandedly ruined the dutch gameplan to put everything through him. He's everything I want a DM to do (everything that Gerrard is not) and everything that ryan says we don't need anymore and is archaic. Someone sitting infront of the back 4, being a boss, helping the back 4 of of the shit, receiving the ball from them and passing it simple to someone who knows what to do with the ball like Gerrard.

Would love a mascherano in our team, gerrard can not do that role, not at all 🙁

I get that, but those games are few and far between where we would need a Mascherano to be man marking a player

What about the rest of the games? He's a top level player but you need to allow for his limitations in your team, and we already do that with Gerrard
