This worries me. This transfer is a bit meh, as I've said before as well.

Surley we can do better.

Worries me too. I've actually been reasonably impressed with Robertson when I've seen him, but obv.I don't know him as well as those fans do and, if this is what they think....

Me too mate, I've thought he looked alright with potential. But that doesn't seem to be the case for the fans watching him every week.

Seen a few suggestions on twitter (sorry Rosco) that we are gonna offer £60m & Sakho for Van Dijk and Ryan Bernard Bertrand (their left back). Probably all bollix but that deal does actually appeal to me.

Assuming you mean Bertrand 😉 yes, I'd support that deal too. It would be ironic though if Sakho put a spanner in the works by insisting on a move to Palace!

Robertson had extremely high potential on Fifa 16. Given I watched him a few times this year in which he was pretty average I'm clinging onto to the FIFA stats should we sign him.

If Sakho really dreams of playing for Liverpool, he's probably best accepting a move to Southampton. We'll just end up buying him back next year in all likelihood.

A word of caution on Tierney - whom I've seen play plenty of times - cos he's not ready yet.

Lovely footballer, runs up and down that wing like fuck, great touch, can play, decent on both feet, and doesn't mind a tackle. The difference in football played at that level, and who he's playing against every week compared to the Premier League is astounding though. I'd like to see him play another year, come up against a few more decent Champions League sides, and let him mature a bit.

If we buy him, he'll likely start off as 2nd choice behind Milner - which doesn't benefit him. Wait a year, let him develop, then get him for 30M if he's come on properly.

Promising, but raw. And I'd worry bout his positional sense at times too.

Yeah, even in the highlights I've seen of him the opposition's defending has been consistently abysmal. Robertson would have probably been tearing it up too had he played for Celtic.

If we wait another year and at current price trends, he's going to cost 50M+ next year though.

What was Southampton's defence like when they had that defence that we're about to make ours? Did they ever have Clyne, VVD, Lovren and Betrand at the same time?
Probably a moot point anyway as I'd fully expect our defensive coaching to make them much shitter.

Nope. Only two out of four played together in any season.

12/13: (60) Shaw (then 17), Clyne (then 21), Fonte; all three were in the Premier League for the first time
13/14: (46) Shaw, Clyne, Fonte, Lovren, Wanyama
14/15: (33) Clyne, Fonte, Wanyama, Bertrand, Alderweireld (loan), Forster (goalkeeper)
15/16: (41) Fonte, Wanyama, Bertrand, Van Dijk, Forster (out for half a season)
16/17: (48) Bertrand, Van Dijk (out for half a season), Forster; Fonte left in January

Also, here's an interesting tidbit:

In 12/13, Southampton had conceded 40 goals in 22 games in their first season back in the Premier League when they sacked Nigel Adkins. Under Pochettino, they conceded 20 goals in 16 games for the rest of the season, which included games against 9 of the teams which finished in the top 10 (they finished 14th).

The interesting bit is that their goals allowed rate didn't change much in 13/14 versus the second half of 12/13 (46/38 ~= 20/16) even though they added Lovren and Wanyama, and with Shaw, Clyne and Fonte now having played a season in the Premier League.

Their defensive record did take a big jump in 14/15 - after they swapped Koeman for Pochettino (to Spurs), Bertrand for Shaw (to Man Utd), Alderweireld on loan for Lovren (to Liverpool) and Forster for Boruc (on loan to Bournemouth in the Championship).

Tierney was their MotM when he played against England. You can watch him for another year .. playing for someone else, because a penny to a pound he's sold this Summer.

So if the consensus is that Tierney is the real talent between the two of them, is our interest in Robinson a football equivalent of a classic pick-up tactic of pretending to hit on an ugly girlfriend? 🙂

Can't help but think that Robertson doesn't feature that high in our wanted list for LB. While Sessengon was widely regarded as the top choice, if Robertson is a close 2nd, shouldn't we seal a deal ASAP/earlier? The first formal reported of us clinching a deal for him was in mid May. Of course, part of the reason might be us wanting to move Moreno on first but the emergence of new names like Dalbert seem to suggest our interest on Robertson may not be as firm as what reports seem to suggest.

He also scored (it was a deflected cross admittedly) and assisted when they played City at home in the CL.

Actually he had a total of 2 assists vs. City ! I don't think his age goes against him too much, experience obviously lacking but with his pace he could easily learn 'on-the-job' since he actually seems to have a defence-minded brain and instincts (unlike Moreno) and if he had (for the sake of saying it) VVD next to him then that could be a partnership for the next 7-8 years.

Would we be better off going hard in for Sessegnon next summer or in January instead of either of these guys now?

We still need a LB, whether it's to start in place of Milner, or as a backup. So for me, it would still make sense to buy someone now to displace or rotate with Milner, and still pursue Sessegnon next year (if we want to), which is also the final year of Milner's contract.
