He will earn $775 million by missing out on the CL just for one year... Makes you wish that you were born in 2010-2014

How much money will we hold out for Mo Salah $350 million, $500 million ??

Never knew missing out on the CL was so lucrative. No wonder Caicedo chose Chelsea. He'll be a billionaire just by missing out the next 8!

There's a league of Wales now????????????

There is but a few welsh clubs played in the original 'English' League and so have the right to compete because of it. I lived in Monmouth (Wales) for far too long and one guy repeatedly told me a total non-entity welsh team is also historically linked to England beyond the 'big 4'. Buggered if I can remember who though!

The top players want to play in the Champions League.
UEFA doesn’t want the top players to go to Saudi Arabia.
UEFA will not let Saudi teams take part in the Champions League - this will discourage top players from going to Saudi, although it won’t stop some of them doing so.
For the same reason, the European Clubs association will not endorse Saudi clubs joining the Champions League.
It would make zero sense to permit this. It would massively devalue the European Leagues and the Champions League itself. Plus it would require constitutional change to vote it in.
Saudi clubs will try to big up the prestige of the World Club Cup instead, because that’s a FIFA comp, and we all know FIFA can be bought.

You know as well as I do, it’s only a matter of time.

Then Saudi will bankroll a new “Super League” chucking gazillions at all big European clubs - might even include Qatari and UAE clubs.

Before you know it - a compromise will be struck that keeps all the big clubs in the UEFA Champions League and in includes ME clubs and several large sacks of cash.

What are the local FA’s going to do - threaten to expel their cash cows? What’s UEFA going to do - pretend the Europa Conference is the new Champions League.

Clubs from the Middle East playing in the Champions League is a matter of when and how much it’ll cost.

But I think it might legitimize the top clubs going for their own super league again. This time it will look like the European clubs fighting the greed of Uefa and human rights violations of the Middle East. It would be much easier for the Euro clubs to hide their own greed and get supporters on side.

Possibly - but I doubt it - City, Newcastle, Chelsea, Man Utd, PSG are hardly going to bring up Human Rights issues in the Middle East. The fans might, but the clubs won’t.

Besides - making money isn’t what what the Saudi’s are after, so the clubs are likely to gain more by going with them than against them.

I disagree. Might be blind faith on my part but I believe this is where the line will be drawn. The Saudis will need to rely on ownership of Newcastle if they want some reflected Champions League glory (and I think it’s more likely they will add other clubs to their portfolio and push on multiple ownership). They may even push to host the CL final, I could see UEFA going for that, maybe even a permanent gig.
But there comes a time when the sport itself, or clubs, or players will say no. A couple of years over there to boost the pension pot is fine. This is not. Some form of resistance might yet happen in golf too.

I hope you’re right - I really do, because the games fucked enough as it is.

Wasn’t it you that once said that players are complicated - they generally follow the money, the glory is nice, but money is better (or something along those lines).

There’s a point at where everyone caves in.

Think of all those poor administrators at UEFA - who would deny them their chance to secure future generations of their family by taking bags of Saudi cash.

Or who would deny John Henry the opportunity to divert some additional Saudi funds towards fulfilling the transfer dreams of Moron & Bluebell.

Unless the Saudi league just falls apart under the weight of unpaid bills and broken promises (here's hoping), I suspect there will be some kind of integration between them and the European clubs at some point. It all just seems a little uneasy at the moment, and UEFA will clearly be concerned.

Not quite sure how that will look, but if the Saudis do move onto attracting the bigger players (rather than the ones heading to retirement) then UEFA won't want top stars not playing in the Champions League, and they definitely won't want the big European clubs forming a Super League without them (which the big clubs will still be very happy to do, obviously).

Giving the Saudis a place in the CL might seem a small price to pay.

I doubt the European associations or clubs will be happy about it, not least because someone will be losing CL places, but if there is money in it for them somewhere then it might change their mind, and in theory (very, very, very much IN THEORY), it could bring the Saudi clubs into Financial Fair Play rules.

I dont think UEFA will cave when it comes to adding any Saudi clubs. Its not in their interest at all to let them into the competition.

It’s a good job UEFA haven’t floated the idea of having a couple of “discretionary” spots for teams of their choosing.

End of the day…. if Australia can take part in the Eurovision Song Contest then anything can happen!!!!!

It would be in their interests financially.

This isn’t rocket science mate - it’s not about the integrity of the competition it’s about getting the most income.

You get that by having the biggest teams - and the biggest teams want to extract the most money.

Look at the format for next season - fucking hell… what a mess (unless you’re Swiss - who was our Swiss poster from years ago!!!!!!).

You know how this goes - at some point Saudi will offer all the riches to top teams to leave and join a new super league funded by them (if they’re smart they do it quickly and include MLS and start taking about the only club competition with Messi & Ronaldo).

They also offer UEFA a chance to retain the teams that have already expressed a desire to run their own thing and are crucial to the Champions League attracting revenue.

Saudi’s don’t care - it’s only numbers on a spreadsheet and either one gets the result they want - but who bites first.

Isn’t that the Prisoner’s Dilemma…

I say bring on the Saudi's, I'd love the chance for us to be the ones to knock them out and make a mockery out of their league.
