I'd tell them to come back to us with the same offer in January.

We can have time to plan for his exit then (and he'll be off to Afcon anyway).
Now that’s a good point. January it is then but not before

Would be interesting if Salah surprises everyone and choses to follow Messi to the MLS when time comes. He is the only player with comparable media stature; he has a mural here in NYC and his face was on Time magazine. And he might actually enjoy the lifestyle here more.
Yeh I saw that last time I was down there. Incredible really that an Egyptian who plays club football in England has a giant (dare I say beautifully rendered) mural in a prominent location in NYC.

It's a perfect illustration (pun intended) of the fact that he is much more than just a football player - and it's why we should not sell him now. When we do we should demand a fee that would make even the Saudis wince.

Would die laughing if we accept a bid and Salah says he doesn’t want to go

Thinking about it if we wait to next summer our bargaining position is quite weak really isn’t it?

They’ll half what they’re offering now no doubt and we’ll have to accept or Mo could easily see out the last year to be able to name his own salary.

January is the only middle ground

Agreed, but it also depends on how the season went.

Hypothetical question, 200m up front, 50m add-ons. You'd have to sell at that point really
Don't think the Saudis are THAT stupid.
Going back to what I said before Salah is the poster child of the Arab world and they want him to come back "home" so to speak.

Exactly, so they might pay dramatically over the odds.

Everyone has a threshold of cost where there would sell him today, regardless of other business we do.

What is everyone's?

It does beg the question @Richey and others have been asking though. Why now? They could’ve thrown this money at us a month or two ago and found us more amenable, plus they could’ve squeezed every ounce of media juice out of him for their seasons opening.

yeah, there is a limit here
he could also get injured before january, the saudis get bored, or something.

He's going guys, embrace yourselves when the news comes.

Rather it be done sooner than later in this already late stage rather than have to read about a new Salah story every hour for the next 6 days.

Who knows. Every chance we're lining replacements up as we speak. I'm sure we've known the interest since the start of the window, wonder whether we delayed it so make it look like we don't have 200m burning a hole in our pocket, and we don't get fleeced by others

I don't think we can sell right now regardless of the amount.

Last season was a disaster. Our rep took a battering, we missed out on the CL and long-term target(s) as well.

Can we afford another season like that with other teams around us improving rapidly?

It doesn't feel like we can.

If we had time to plan and already had his successor at the club or lined up then yeah, maybe. As things stand, the forward line is still "in development", the midfield will require time to come together and the defence is very light and creaky.

For me it boils down to the fact that I don't trust Diaz, Jota, Gakpo and Nunez to step up.

Paul Merson talks absolute fucking shit

“ I don’t know why they don’t just throw another 50 million in, it’s not like they’re looking after their wallet. Liverpool are going to win anything with Sarah anyway”

£200 mill for me

I think about 170-180m is just about the ‘right’ fee to consider selling, if most of that goes into squad development.

Because there’s Newcastle connections here. Let’s not pretend there’s some imaginary wall or code of ethics involved on the Saudi football industry. We are a competitor. This weakens us.
