No it's not the same at all Anita!

You said:

"the denial that he's done anything wrong born from the desire to desperately believe he's this wonderful manager which he isn't".

The fact is every single poster on here knows (and has regularly stated) that Rafa has made plenty of mistakes.

Of course posters who still think that Rafa is the right man to manage us will defend "many" of his actions that are being debated, especially when they have some very valid points.

You in your infinite wisdom may think that Rafa getting the boot is the obvious solution to all of our clubs problems, but believe it or not, not everyone else is so sure.
RPM, I can't *fathom* how people think he's the best man to carry on with the club in the state that it's in. Seriously, I can't. I can't ever remember things being so bad in my lifetime. Things are as bad as they've been for a long long time, and I don't understand how that isn't as unbearable to others as it is to me. The only way we have to turn things around is for Rafa to go.
Well Souness was less than 20 years ago so aren't you the lucky one. Or is it the spoilt one?

Wonderfully dismissive of anyone who doesn't share the same opinion as you too.
Wouldn't you say that this season might be worse to some than those under Souness because, relative to expectation as the beginning of a season, this one is up there as contending for most dissapointing of any since we last won it..?

I get your point that his team were often worse than this year's outfit (not by much at times though), but we never had a realistic shout of the title under him, so his 7th or 8th place finishes weren't as heartbreaking as this season look in danger of becoming.

Only twice have I truly believed that we had the team to win the league in the past 15 or so years... When Paul Ince arrived, and last summer. That season, and this one so far, are the worst since 1990, imo.
Well that's disappointement then Whaddapie, which is entirely different from Ainta's point above about things being at the lowest ebb in someone's lifetime - which is fucking laughable hyperbole really.
Thank you for getting the point of my post - caustic though it was.

Just a little perspective Anita. I am sure your lifetime (as a fan) isn't very long compared with the history of LFC. Say it stretches way back to Kenny's time as a manager, I am sure there are plenty of crisis from then till now. I am sure Houllier's last year was pretty horrendous as well.
How about this for a little perpective Y1. Never in all my years as a fan have i felt so dispondant on our prospects, I suspect Portly would say the same and he goes back even further than me, to the early sixties.
The problem now is the consequences of failure are far more accute and catastrophic than even five or six years ago.

You are right in that we are rightly despondent because we expected more from the great performance of last season. Our heightened prospect and anticipation has now be shot to pieces, that I agree. Surely this is not the worst LFC team.

Anita, perspective is not an excuse for failure of Rafa and the team, perspective tells us that our current despair is not without precedent.

Debatable worst squad. Maybe the unluckiest team.
Strictly speaking I doubt all of those were ever together in the same squad but I do see your point

However, comparing things on paper is not always that useful. On paper our team looks alright. On the pitch they are shit.

Squad strength is something that has become more of a focus in recent years in my opinion with more games to play and managers wanting to rest and rotate. Our great teams of the 80s didn't have a great deal of quality behind them if memory serves.

Spackman and McDonald were steady players in midfield but would probably get ripped to shreads in this football forum age along with Irvine and Magilton.

We were lucky to have a centre back of the quality of Gillespie to back up Hansen and Lawrenson however Ablett, Alex Watson and Mark Seagraves would no doubt have collected their own nicknames on this forum.

Walsh was an excellent and injury prone striker behind Dalglish and Rush however Hodgson was not of the same quality.

We can't expect to have the strength in depth of Chelsea and (in time) City given the difference in transfer funds. I would prefer that we increase the strength of the squad by bring the young lads through.

Understood, but I am roughly the same age as you, and I don't think it's hysterical of me nor is it ridiculous hyperbole for me to say that I am at my most dispondent in all my years of supporting LFC... I understand that I've discribed disspointment as opposed to disaster in my above post, but as Vlad points out a few posts back, the financial bind that we're in, coupled with the potential repercussions of this season's dissapointments, have me fearing for our future, both on and off the field, in a way that I never have before.

You may not be there, but I think it's unfair to say that those of us who are fearful of what the current situation could see us become are 'chicken-licken'-ing it.

What a stupid collection of disparate names.

Here's example 1: Jim Magilton.

Number of games played by Jim Magilton in his Liverpool career?

ZERO.

Yeah. "Useless cunts".

Which is what they were.

However, only the terrible Gary Ablett played more than 10 games for Liverpool, and he was roundly abused in virtually every single game. I was there.

The problem with a strong squad is that the team must be rotated to keep players happy. Otherwise players will leave unless they are paid very high not to play! That is how I think Chelsea is able to keep such a strong squad. We all know how some of us and most pundits have had a go at our team's rotations apart from ManU, who have rotated more. They are absolved because they happened to win games. It is debatable that the present ManU squad is stronger than Chelsea and even us.

Utd have more options up front than us and also have veterans such as Giggs and Scholes and younger lads who have come through the ranks to pad their squad. Carragher is our only "veteran".

Well, I'm nearly as old, John... and I can remember darker days than these.

That seems to be a poor excuse to keep Rafa though.

If you think it's because he can dig us out of the shit-hole he helped fill in, then fair enough.

But if its because 'things could be worse', then I'm just more depressed than ever.

Because I also remember days far, far brighter than what we're living through now.

Give up because I need to sleep and many a debates have been done on our team/squad v ManU's team/squad. I admit defeat in not wanting to drag this debate any longer. Cheers.
