No it's not the same at all Anita!

You said:

"the denial that he's done anything wrong born from the desire to desperately believe he's this wonderful manager which he isn't".

The fact is every single poster on here knows (and has regularly stated) that Rafa has made plenty of mistakes.

Of course posters who still think that Rafa is the right man to manage us will defend "many" of his actions that are being debated, especially when they have some very valid points.

You in your infinite wisdom may think that Rafa getting the boot is the obvious solution to all of our clubs problems, but believe it or not, not everyone else is so sure.
RPM, I can't *fathom* how people think he's the best man to carry on with the club in the state that it's in. Seriously, I can't. I can't ever remember things being so bad in my lifetime. Things are as bad as they've been for a long long time, and I don't understand how that isn't as unbearable to others as it is to me. The only way we have to turn things around is for Rafa to go.
Well Souness was less than 20 years ago so aren't you the lucky one. Or is it the spoilt one?

Wonderfully dismissive of anyone who doesn't share the same opinion as you too.
Well, I'm nearly as old, John... and I can remember darker days than these.

That seems to be a poor excuse to keep Rafa though.

If you think it's because he can dig us out of the shit-hole he helped fill in, then fair enough.

But if its because 'things could be worse', then I'm just more depressed than ever.

Because I also remember days far, far brighter than what we're living through now.
Where did I say this was a reason to keep Rafa?
You do, in general, take a liberal dose of angry pills when people suggest he should be gone Spion so perhaps your reputation precedes you.

The Souness years were, indeed, very dark. What followed the King's resignation was a horrible period because it was simultaneously the demise of a world power in domestic football and a very black stain against the name of a Kop Legend.

GH also ended in some dark days and plenty of people claimed that the club was about to disappear off the map of world and European football during his last two seasons. There were those who, with a marvelous demonstration of their ignorance, thought he'd taken the club further back than when he started.

The difference between these periods, though, is fairly clear.

1) When Kenny went there was a general recognition amongst many of us that we had to rebuild. Indeed there were plenty of us who felt that was why the King had gone - because he felt he was incapable of despatching from the club some of his mates and football buddies. That Souness didn't manage the rebuild is irrefutable and we certainly never looked capable of the title in those years but we also, to some extent, expected that pain as we walked through a very large shadow cast by a formerly great team.

2) In his last two seasons (or 1 and 3/4) GH really struggled with his commitment. That second last season, when we led the race and looked so assured, only to fall to pieces so badly was a huge blow to both the manager and the perception of the fans. Despite his statements to the contrary, Houllier reverted to his defensive approach with the strikers living off scraps and, ultimately, our failure to make top 4 that season was a shock that left us almost numb. The final season was a desperate struggle with Newcastle to make 4th - a battle we ultimately won. But at no stage during that season did we look likely to finish worse than 5th and always looked odds on for 4th.

This year Rafa is dealing with a more powerful Chelsea (although they were formidable in GH's last season) as well as a cashed up City. The Arse, mancs, Spurs, Brum and, arguably, Villa are no greater than the threats found back then. Yet this season we look very capable of fighting for 6th.

The last days of GH looked bleak but not this bleak. The performances during the reign of Souness were worse but expectedly so. The depressing part of this time is that, while there are genuine reasons why the manager should be excused for not launching a title challenge it's difficult to mount a credible argument as to why we are wedged between Brum and Fullham, eyeing off a mid table finish. City (who's next league fixture is at home to Portsmouth) and Spurs could really put a gap between us and 5th by the end of January.

Ah, perspectives.

Awaits other old farts to post.

Guus Hiddink's agent last night suggested he had been approached by Liverpool.
The claim would cast serious doubts over the future of beleaguered Anfield manager Rafa Benitez.

Cees van Nieuwenhuizen confirmed that Turkey were interested in appointing former Chelsea manager, but said they were just one of nine suitors for his client.

'I have spoken with representatives of four clubs and five national federations,' Van Nieuwenhuizen told Sovetskiy Sport.
Almost all of the options have previously been mentioned in the press - Manchester City, Liverpool, Juventus, etc.

'However, as I have repeatedly said, we have not held talks with anyone.

'To all we have said that there must first be talks with the new president of Russian FA and to know his position on the future.'

Hiddink rejected an approach by City before Roberto Mancini was appointed at Eastlands a month ago because the timing was not right.

But the 63-year-old recently admitted he was keen to work again in England, provided it was with the blessing of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

IMO Hiddink gets too much stick at times on here, but I'm not at all sure I'd want someone who felt the need (rightly or wrongly) to get the go-ahead from Abramovich first.

Yeah, that's a bit creepy. And hard to imagine Roman saying yes unless he thought we were no threat to them at all.

Gillett: In favour of Benitez

Liverpool co-owner George Gillett has spoken out in defence of Rafael Benitez, claiming the Spaniard is one of the top five managers in the world.

Benitez has been in the firing line for much of this season and his position became even more precarious last week after the Reds were dumped out of the FA Cup with a 2-1 home defeat by Reading.

Liverpool had already exited the UEFA Champions League at the first hurdle and currently sit seventh in the Premier League table.

Gillett has traditionally been less enthusiastic than co-owner Tom Hicks over Benitez's tenure at the club, but feels this season's poor results are a mere "blip" which the Spaniard is more than capable of dealing with.

The American said: "We believe if you were to put a list together of the top five managers in the world, he would definitely be on that list for us.

"And we think he's been tossed a curve ball by circumstance, injuries and so forth.

"I think that's been a real challenge to the coach. He's had to really make some innovations and play some players out of position and so forth.

"And notwithstanding that, they've generally played with a lot of passion. I really believe it's a blip."

Unlucky
Injuries have certainly compounded Liverpool's problems with Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson and Yossi Benayoun all currently on the sidelines.

But they have also been unlucky in other areas, such as when a beach ball on the pitch at Sunderland back in October contributed to a 1-0 defeat.

"That was a real low blow," Gillett told Canadian radio station Prime Time Sports.

"He (Benitez) has had a struggle getting the morale of the boys back up but we've got a great group of young men."

Well, at least they're going after a decent option and not some no mark like Jurgen.

I wonder how many games has to save his job... at least until the summer.

Indeed. And if Roman did agree to it I'm not sure I'd want a manager who seems to be in the pocket of another club's owner. Would our best players suddenly become unavailable when we play Chelsea?
And why does Hiddink owe so much to Abramovich anyway?

He doesn't, if anything the reverse is now true. Under Scolari, Chelsea were a bit of a mess before Hiddink came in. And I think the only reason it's been mentioned is that Hiddink is contracted to some role at Chelsea.

Ha, possibly.

Still think they're going to invest money into the squad this month then Vlad?

Maybe Hiddink's argument would be that he got the job with the Russki Federation (and the temp.gig at Chelsea) because of Abramovich, so he wants to check that the guy doesn't have a problem if Hiddink goes to one of his club's rivals. It's a bit like your best mate and his GF splitting up, and you and she want to go out together, so you check with matey. Understandable, even admirable in a way, but as far as I'm concerned he's ruled himself out of consideration if he thinks he owes Abramovich that much.

I just can't believe how short sighted they are, and sadly Purslow does not seem to be able to exact any influence over matters, as surely he would be pointing out the madness of our strike force, and I use that term loosely. If I were them I would be sticking £15m each in out of the back pocket

Yeah i wouldn't expect one game to change anyones view on this mate. It was just that he's taken so much stick recently that i bet he really cherished it tonight.

Ha, i presumed that was the spurs fans singing "you're getting sacked in the morning".
