Ever since Gerrard's horrendous handwash & fist-fight brawl I don't think he has looked the same player.
He's got a lot of things on his mind and he seems incapable of pulling us out of this mess. Maybe the captaincy should indeed move on.

What I said above your post, football players have to be trained in the right way. The training is a science where the considerations of each individuals body need to be taken into account. The players need to work on improving strength etc in certain muscle groups and this is the job of the fitness coach to look at all this shit.
