LIVERPOOL FC fans’ union Spirit of Shankly (SOS) have written to owners Fenway Sports Group calling on them to provide “clear leadership and direction” to dispel fears that the club is in “disarray”.

In the correspondence sent to principal owner John W Henry, chairman Tom Werner and managing director Ian Ayre, SOS also urged them to improve communication with supporters.
SOS, which has around 50,000 members, acted after Kenny Dalglish became the latest victim of FSG’s extensive clearout which has left the Reds without either a manager or a director of football.

“We are writing to you as we are concerned about the current situation that our football club finds itself in,” it reads.

“It is a time of worry for supporters, not just because of the huge changes and the transformation that is happening in such a short time frame but the manner in which it is happening.

“It may be that yourselves and the board of Liverpool Football Club have a vision you are working towards. It may be that you have implemented a strategy to deliver that vision and decisions are being made to work towards this.

“However, from the outside where supporters find themselves once again, it looks like a football club in disarray. Confusion and chaos seems to reign and no-one is coming out of this with much credit, particularly the football club’s image and brand.

“We need clear and pro-active communication, a confident message about the club’s plans that breeds confidence amongst supporters that we are moving in the right direction. Instead, we have silence and a lack of information or understanding on decisions being made.

“Today we find ourselves with key positions at the football club vacant. Most notably, the position of manager and the lack of a footballing man on the board. There has been much speculation, along with emails sent to supporters groups, on who is providing advice to yourselves.

“It may well be the case that this is speculation; however, it is understandable that there is speculation given the lack of clarity and information on who is deciding on matters, why and the timing of them.

“It is the firm belief of Spirit of Shankly that footballing decisions should be made by footballing men who are appropriately qualified. We know all too well of the mistakes that follow if this simple mantra is not adhered to. Are suitably qualified individuals making these decisions?”
Ayre explained last week that not even winning the FA Cup would have saved Dalglish as his future depended on the Reds’ Premier League form.

In their letter SOS expressed fears that cash generated from Champions League qualification has now surpassed clinching silverware in importance.
“The quote from Ian Ayre would lead us to believe that our focus is no longer on winning trophies but making money,” it continued.
“In a season that has seen us end with one trophy out of the three available and narrowly miss out on a second, it is somewhat disrespectful to suggest to supporters that winning another trophy would not be good enough.

"Is it now the strategy of Liverpool FC to place greater importance upon generating revenues above winning trophies?

“Communication and leadership is vital. As supporters we have seen all too clearly what a lack of communication from absentee owners leads to.
“There has been very limited dialogue through the supporters committee which is still in its infancy, but this has been mainly used by the club to get messages out, rather than the dialogue promised with supporters at the time of your takeover.

“At a time when a clear message is needed, it is somewhat embarrassing for supporters and the football club to see Twitter messages on who supporters think should be the next manager. We are Liverpool FC. We are better than that.

“Ultimately, supporters remain in the dark once again about the plans for this football club moving forward. We find ourselves experiencing deja vu, where boardroom decisions lead to more questions than they answer. If we all want to pull in the same direction, transparency is needed.

“As supporters we often offer blind devotion to our football team. Due to our history, we do not afford the same luxury to the football club. It is equally as important for you to trust in supporters, so that we can work together for the betterment of the football club, as it is for us to trust in you.

“We ask that you speak with supporters – engage with a true representative cross section of supporters and work with supporters to provide solutions to our current problems. This will enable communication with supporters to take place in an open and accountable manner.”

Whats wrong with the message?

Its from SOS, SOS is not SCM, so must be wrong ... is that it?

They're fucking deluded. They claim to be representing "the fans" - well I'm a fan, and that shit up there doesn't represent my view, nor does it represent (in my opinion) the majority of fans views.

I don't dislike them anywhere near as much as others, simply cos I know a few active members & have spoken to them, but this letter is badly written, badly timed & doesn't help matters at all.

Add to that the fact they've been unofficially lobbying for Rafa's return using the SoS name in doing so & it's fair to say I'm not happy, had they not written in that letter that they don't get involved in managerial decisions & had they taken views from members I'd understand it, but they didn't.

I wish they'd just go support AFC Liverpool, get Rafa to take over and just stop embarrasing LFC

Let's use the agitprop language of the 70s. It worked for the dockers. Didn't it?

Quite.

The whole union stance would work only if you could ensure x amount of revenue was lost by non attendance but season tickets kinda rule that out, so they're effectively powerless. During h & G they at least had the support of the majority to protest, but they no longer have that.

It's a shame cos a less militant fans group would be a real asset.

IMO reds & blues should combine fan groups to lobby the, council & clubs together to get transport links improved. The cost of land at Anfield is next to nothing, a rail link to the city centre & airport would mean a food & drink square & hotel complex would be a viable option, but it requires joined up thinking.

Start the movement FF5!

No point, the council is run by corrupt & inept nobs & most fans of both clubs are bell ends, see rawk & bluekipper for evidence of the latter, the former is well known.

The only way it'd work is with at least one large hotel chain with financial backing to agree to build should certain conditions be met by council, merseytravel & the clubs, so if anyone knows anyone high up in a hotel chain let me know & I'll see what I can do!

Get on the blower to Donald Trump!

The more they start saying what they do and don't support, the more of a mockery it makes of the whole idea of loyalty. It's like religious faith. If you've got it and you're happy with it - don't look at it too hard, don't analyse it, it won't stack up.

We support the team - not the club. Er... I support the club, not the team. SPLITTER. I'm in the SSO. I'm in the OSS. I demand the right to support the DoF but not the manager, who was brought here under false pretenses.

...Just either fucking turn up and watch them or fuck off.

I understand people dont like SOS, but I still cant see anything cringeworthy in that letter. They are saying what a lot of people on here have said already, they are not claiming to represent all fans and they are not using militant 1970s language (though I sometimes wish they would).

Seriously - other than "we dont like SOS" what is wrong with what has actually been written?

Point it out in the following .. I'm obviously thick as I cant see it :

We are writing to you as we are concerned about the current situation that our football club finds itself in,

Communication and leadership is vital. As supporters we have seen all too clearly what a lack of communication from absentee owners leads to.

I've no real issues with it other than it just feels no more than a little nosey and the club communicating openly as they desire may compromise their plans. I don't think it's at cut and dried or simple as SOS think

They're asking for the club to communicate that they're doing something positive. If the club did that would it change the reality?

If I was a lizard I'd speak to SoS and ask them to draft up the kind of thing they'd like to read, then send it back to them.

Agreed, we are a business and without revenues, trophies will NOT come, BUT they have a point that there is a sense of drift with no communication. For me, it's positive that NESV or FSG are getting a few shots across the bows.

Yeah, I took a lot of it to be a nicely veiled threat that if FSG dont play ball they'll arrange another march fron the pub they all drink in to the game, where they'll make more noise than they usually do.

What fucks me off most is that the media report it as "Liverpool fans write to FSG"

No.

That's not the fault of SOS though, is it? The don't claim to represent all LFC fans. The media set their own agenda on these things.

The manner in which they carry out what they do and what they say to the owners doesn't represent the Spirit of Shankly much either.

"We need clear and pro-active communication, a confident message about the club’s plans that breeds confidence amongst supporters that we are moving in the right direction. Instead, we have silence and a lack of information or understanding on decisions being made."

How can FSG inform supporters of decisions if they haven't made them yet? The letter reads like a whiny child who is dying for attention.
