The frustrating thing with Babel is that he is just clearly lazy. The kop gave him a real hard time in the derby and it was because he wouldnt chase players down r apply pressure.

10+ goals? That's a bit misleading, he scored 4 goals in 30 Premier League games, so I don't know where is other at least 7 goals came from. Those 4 goals were against the likes of Derby, Newcastle and Bolton (one home one away)

I'm surprised you're using the 'Look who he's scored against' argument. It's like the Chelsea fans who told me Gerrard's goals against TNS shouldn't count that year -

Del - I don't agree with your post entirely but I'm being a wee bit hypocritical in asking Neil to not bother and here I am bothering.

Let's end it like this - you guys are right. He's shit, wonderful. Now we can debate how great Lucas is. Brendan?

Awwww, don't get all tetchy with us Wizzy, we love you really 😉.

I think the look who he scored against" argument does carry some weight, not least of all as I am sure if he had scored the four against United and Chelsea it would have been raised by some, possibly even you Wiz.

He scored the game winner against the Mancs last year, albeit on a mishit - and set up Kuyt's winner against Standard Liege in the the 120 minute ... Alas, it doesn't matter. We have him for 3 months and then he's gone.

We have said that the last two or three transfer windows, and he is still here.

Babel shouldnt start. He is an attack minded guy, and those guys will not have working conditions in Rafas style of play. Rafa wants players who will work their socks off defensively, and rather hold back when the team "attacks".

That's a bit of a squiff view, when you consider that we were the highest scoring side last season, Torres has scored the most goals in a debut season for an overseas player, and Steven Gerrard has had a BRILLIANT goalscoring record under Benitez.

There might be some issue over his cautiousness and his ability to consistently spot good attacking talent (more so outwide) but saying Babel has failed or won't succeed because Rafa has blunted his attacking nature is bollocks.

Liverpool FC latest: Ryan Babel reveals heart-to-heart with Rafael Benitez

Feb 24 2010 by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

RYAN BABEL hopes his heart-to-heart chat with Rafael Benitez can help salvage his Anfield career.

Babel has endured a hugely disappointing campaign to prompt talk of an exit from Liverpool in the summer, with the player the subject of a £9million bid from Birmingham City last month.

Sunday’s goalless draw against Manchester City was his first Premier League start since lining up against the same opposition at Anfield back in November.

Babel was hauled off in the second half after an ineffective display, meaning the Dutchman has still only played the full 90 minutes once this season.

But the 23-year-old has held talks with manager Benitez aimed at bringing out his best as he attempts to prove he has a future at the club.

“I have had a good talk with the manager and I know what I have to do,†said Babel. “I just have to try to be patient, keep working hard and doing my best.â€

Babel will be part of the squad that flies to Romania this afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League return clash against Unirea Urziceni.

Babel has plenty of power and pace, and in many ways he reminds me of a mixture of Cisse and Baros... None of them had the main attribute that Rafa is looking for and that is a steady defensive work rate helping the team in its collective pressure. In seasons we have done well the way we press as a team was world class and our main Key Success factor. The way we pressed Chelsea in those semis have been outstanding. We won the ball high in the pitch and had a short distance to go. This season we have managed to press like a girls scout team, and hence we have seldom put ourself in scoring positions, Lucas being one of the main culprits in our defensive play (but also Kuyt/Mascher/ Riera i.e. being out of form).. And this is where Benitez cautious style hampen us. When we win the ball high up, we have players high up. When we win it at our own box we have a long way to transport the ball, and with defensive work as priority number 1 we rarely have more than one player treathening the opposition box. you will NEVER see one of the two CM inside or even near the box. You will extremely rarely see the opposite winger inside or treathening the box. You will hardly see more than one of the strikers (I pur Gerrard as a striker here) inside tha box. This leaves us hard to counter on, but in the same manner extremely easy to defend against.

So where is Babel in all this. He is a typical attacking winger. Likes to push in between the full back and CD or cut from outside the full bak into the room behind him. This is what he can do, this is his strength as a footie. How can he do this if his position is 20 meter lower than the any full back pushes forward? Noone is that quick. And to have him running around covering his own fullback and help the team press is useless. He is appr at lucas level defensively. No use at all. So yes our style of play is not made for Babel.... Not stating that he would be the perfect match for us if we played a different style, but at least it would make sense to have him in the squad... He is the fucking lamppost that Benitez bought himself when given money for a sofa!

I really can't imagine Rafa and Ryan being able to hold together any sort of meaningful conversation.

The Goundhog-Day story on how they have cleared the air and Babel now is ready to do as Rafa wants suggests that you are 100% correct.

great goal by ryan an absolutely sublime first touch and clinical finish. bet if he tried the exact same move today in training he'd fuck it up

still, keep it up ryan

If he really decides to get his head down and fight for his place, I think he just might.

We're so desperate for attacking options that he'll never have a better chance.
