Roy when asked about Torres

Is this confirmed? Torres is deffo staying?

So for all the wailing and gnashing of teeth the only player we are losing is the one we all knew wanted to go and even before Rafa left he was trying to leave.

Thats a bit of alright eh?

So Benayoun, Insua, Mascherano, Aurelio, Riera out.
Jovanovic, Cole, Wilson in. We need a LB and at least one DM and maybe a CF.
We better hope we get top dollar for Mascherano.
Id take Cambiasso and 20m in a heartbeat.

Mascherano is perhaps our fourth best player. This is not a disaster.
He's the kind of player you miss when he's gone. Nobody is better at the job he does. I would love Scott Parker as a replacement.

I think after the infamous "all he does is pass" quote from last year we're all going to be very careful what we say about Mascherano's contribution to the team. However, I will say that my personal preference (which has no value whatsoever) is for central midfielders who are very good at loads of things, not just amazing at one. I hope I've said something meaningful in there without opening myself up to ridicule when we lose 20 games this season.

Oh wait, that's what we lost last season isn't it?

he's certainly excellent at what he does. But I wouldn't say he's streets ahead of the likes of Parker.

Not even as good as Didi. Maybe not even in the top 20 Liverpool midfielders.

Everyone is replaceable.

Now he is going, I wish you were right, but I don't think you are! Mascher was like a terrier with his tail wagging, breaking up attack after attack for 90 minutes. One of the best defensive midfielders I have seen at the club.

You don't get to be captain of Argentina by being a mediocre player. 🙂

Yes, as a specialty defensive midfielder he is fantastic. As an all round midfielder he's just 'very good'. I'll freely admit though that I don't know a huge amount about football, a lot of my opinions sprout like weeds from a illogical and poorly maintained flowerbed of beliefs and personal preferences.

Talksport news said about an hour or so ago that Masher is definitely going (as we now know) and Torres has said he will return to Liverpool on Monday and will be staying.
Is this the same Talksport that was telling us yesterday that he was "100% leaving"?

Its clear we can't trust a word they fucking say. They are a pack of sensationalist cunts.

Are they the same people who yesterday had it on, apparently, good authority that he was going?
Yeah. This was on their news though (so they're just reporting what's been said elsewhere - What Roy has said in interview today). Not just where a load of bellends who know fuck all, sit around pretending to have sources that know Torres 100% 'might' join Chelsea.

Roy Hodgson today dismissed speculation surrounding the future of Fernando Torres by revealing the striker has informed Liverpool he cannot wait to return to Melwood next week and play his part in a new Anfield era.

The Spain star is currently enjoying a holiday after the World Cup finals - but he has told Hodgson he is looking forward to helping the Reds' quest for glory in 2010-11.

"As far as I know, he is looking forward to coming back here on Monday," the boss told reporters at a press conference.

"He is enjoying a holiday, which is a well-deserved break as I don't think he's had one for three years.

"He is spending a lot of time with his family and, as far as I know, is keeping a very low profile and not really speaking to anybody.

"But he has told us he is looking forward to Monday, looking forward to getting back to work and looking forward to playing for Liverpool next season.

"That's what I know and I would suggest all other reports are erroneous."

Roy's not been wrong so far, so his word is his bond 😉. Torres is staying!! Contract extension on the way 😉

Nice job Roy - you've held onto the big names. Now, just get us off to a flying start and I'll give myself an Atomic Wedgie to maker up for the Hodgson out thread!

Ha ha, that applies to me too. I would venture to suggest that it applies to all of us, but I'm sure that there might be a few around who disagreed.

Masher's very good at what he does, but in home matches against most of the league, he's just too specialised to be of much use. There will be times when we miss him dearly, but I don't fear this transfer in the same way I did Alonso's.

I think we'll be okay.

I really appreciated having Mascherano in away fixtures against big sides in Europe. Luckily we won't be playing any of those this season.

Yeah, Mascher'll be a loss anyway, but it'll be most felt against the 'big' sides as opposed to 90% of the league. If we get say, Parker in, we should perform similarly against most of the league, but against the top sides it'll hurt.

That's the exact comparison I was thinking of in the other thread, Wilko.

It can be done, but the problem is 'will it'?

we should definately move for parker. he was fantastic last season in a dreadful team so he'll feel right at home here.

Keegan, I think, was a bigger deal than Mascherano but the replacement we got was so astoundingly good that we can't expect that to happen again.

I think it's better to compare it to losing Owen or McManaman.

Yeah, just like Kevin Keegan. Brilliant fucking analogy, given that he was replaced by our GREATEST EVER PLAYER, at a British record transfer fee

So tell me, Bilko, what are the odds of that happening again?
