we should definately move for parker. he was fantastic last season in a dreadful team so he'll feel right at home here.
I'd be happy with Parker and I dare say the player himself would be interested in such a move, but the problem is likely to be the fee. W.Ham really, REALLY don't want him to leave.

I really appreciated having Mascherano in away fixtures against big sides in Europe. Luckily we won't be playing any of those this season.
Ouch.

Ha.

We'll be playing plenty of away games against top sides in the Prem though.
will be a bonus to win the ball in one move and not give it away with a wayward pass in the next, that will help against top sides away from home.

Well, about six I suppose.
As opposed to maybe 8 to win Bigears? 😉

If we can win it in the first place.

Mascherano is perhaps our fourth best player. This is not a disaster.
He's the kind of player you miss when he's gone. Nobody is better at the job he does. I would love Scott Parker as a replacement.
mascher is irreplaceable.
is he fuck
erm, how can you replace the best defensive midfielder in the world? you can't, all you can do is mitigate against the loss.
Maybe you don't need to replace him if you plan on playing the opponents half a bit more often.
...is more than likely the correct answer.

Can't do that without the ball.

Ball winner are ball losers.
Depends on what they're told to do with it when they've won it. Very few big teams do without at least one, and I can't think of any who do that win things.

That's the point though Jules, if they can only safely pass the ball 5 yards either side or backwards you're missing something.

Says the footballing guru who suggested we sell Torres and buy Robinho and Eto with the cash! Then when challenged backtracked and said he was *actually* suggesting it.

I accept that, gene, but what a top DM brings to the table more than makes up for what he doesn't IF he's used properly. Few if any teams win trophies without such a player.

I said I would be very interested if the torres deal was on, in other words he was going to be sold - if that was the case then we might as well opt for their best players. the question was valuation and if we ended up with robinho + 30m for torres based on the assumption that it is a 60m deal then I think that is a reasonable outcome.

We were so reliant on Masher last season because Insua couldn't defend and Lucus is average at everything.

Get rid of those two and they'll be less onus on a DM mopping up and covering for them.

I dunno though Jules.

Busquets, Fletcher, Cambiasso, Song, Obi-Mikel, Toure.... I think they all kinda play deep as holding midfielders. I don't think any are as good as Mascherano at snapping at the heels of opponents but they seem a bit better with the ball... to me anyway. Maybe it's just that 'the grass is always greener'. Most of them have actually won shit though, which is more than can be said for Mascherano.

No one is irreplaceable, yet masher is very very good. Maybe the best around at what he does. Let's not downplay how good he is.

Scott Parker for example had a fine season, but he's not in masher's league. Very few are.

Reluctantly agree, esp.since he wants to go. When you're scratching around for cash you can't always sell just who you want to sell.

Gene - Song aside (the Arse, who don't make a habit of fielding a DM, haven't won a whole lot lately,) point taken, tho' IMO that's due more to those other players being at happy and successful clubs than to differences between each of them and Masher. That list does of course point up the consistent presence of such a player in the most successful club sides. 😉

and manu have won the league with carrick and fletcher in the middle of the park (to be fair fletcher has vastly improved)

we will be better served keeping the ball better thus we wont have to run around like headless chickens trying to win the ball back when we give it away.
