I've many concerns. First and foremost he'll be a 'yes' man to those two cunts who own the club. He's not the type to rock the boat so will he fight to keep our best players? Not so sure. His record is good in poor leagues. His record in good leagues is relatively poor. I think he's a mediocre signing. And we're heading towards mediocrity - if we're not there already.
The yes man part worries me. I wasn't happy with Rafa at the helm but at least he took the fight to the owners.
Do you really think that?

Surely nobody in their right mind would stand idly by whilst their best players were being sold, you're just digging your own grave
I'm not saying Roy will stand idly by, either is Sunny I. Roy is a rather passive man and won't have clauses in his contract giving him added control with regards to transfers in and out. Rafa did his fair share of stirring the pot but at least he didn't let the owners walk all over him. Hope Roy is up for the fight with them

Rafa had no clauses in his contract about transfers either ILD. Premier league rules dictate where the power lies.

a few bad results and it could all end in tears. all the people who were rafa fans will have less patience with him (roy) because they'll be thinking of rafa (especially if rafa hit the ground running at IM) and most of the people that wanted rafa out will likely have wanted a more high profile manager, so patience will be at a premium all round.

As I said I didn't know the in's and out's of it. Did he request full control or what was the situation?

He wanted it, but it's not possible so presumably he wanted a softer form of power where he wouldn't be second guessed by those with the power. (The Board or CEO)

Even if he did, they didn't exactly work out, did they?

We spent the best part of £35M on a crock who he couldn't play for half a season, and then wouldn't play for the rest of it, and a right back (a position we could have filled for half the money, or less) when we desperately needed another striker

I am pleased to see the general consensus on here.
I suppose we might have wanted a higher profile man , but as has been pointed out Roy does have some great strengths, and I think those strengths are what is needed at the moment. A steady hand going about things in a calm measured way.
Hopefully we will see the new broom getting back to basics
Although I also think he might surprise a few people, he is not the complete pussy cat everyone has him down for, and I don't think he will be a yes man, I think he is a man of principle, and one that gains respect, and we could do with plenty of that right now.

regards

to be honest I think keeping people fit and holding on to the stars will see us raise up the table, all roy has to do is the obvious which eluded rafa far too often last season.

I'm not defending Rafa in anyway SR. Just a bit cautious of the road we are going down is all. Just want the owners gone so we can move on to better things. Perhaps we needed Rafa gone but I would have suffered him a bit longer while the current owners we're still here.

Let's hope so Vlad. Good post as per.

I definitely think we've done things in the wrong order - it shopuld have been new owners, new manager, new players, new stadium, new shiny stuff in the cabinet (although I'm happy to swap those last two, I just think that's the more realistic option), but I just think this idea that whoever comes in isn't going to fight their corner and just be a yes man is a bit, I dunno

I don't understand why it needs to be someone high profile, we need someone who is capable. Hodgson is.
And the Rafa v Hodgson comparison is only relevant in the sense of which one of them is better suited to our current situation.

Given the rumoured contract length you'd have to presume his job description is to get us back in the Champions League by getting the best out of what's there already. We don't have much room to add to the wage bill and transfer funds aren't going to be plentiful so it'll be minor tweaking and rekindling the form of a host of under-performing players that will have to be the order of the day.

I can see the logic in it, financially, but i don't think it'll give us any chance of winning the league in the next 5-7 years.

I'd be happy with Hodgson. Very capable coach.
I don't care if he isn't a big name, or if rafa is seen as a bigger name or whatever.
Good luck to the man.

I followed Mark Mc advise and put money on Roy. Only €20 but got 6's on betfair.

Not really a person to bet big but IF Hodgson is named manager I'll gladly take the €100, profit is profit.

If you really loved the club you'd donate your winnings to our transfer budget.

If he does get appointed (and it still is a big 'if') he'll get my full support. Who knows, he might turn out alright.
Goes without saying, but I cant help but think, despite me not being Rafa's biggest fan, that from Rafa to Roy would be a step down.
I always felt confident and assured when Rafa sent the team out in those big games in Europe and on this stage he often proved to be a tactical genius. There were far more games in the league, however, when I felt that we got a result in spite of Rafa because he'd sent out a jumble of a team and made senseless substitutions. It will be nice to have a man who is more of a players' manager and who doesn't continuously play Benayoun on the left.
^^^^^^^

Rafa had lost it here and it wasn't going to change any time soon. It doesn't matter who he manages now. The fact that big European clubs are after him isn't a surprise, because that's where his talents shine brightest.

How many good Premiership clubs would want him?

Not sure if this has been posted:

Liverpool will make a formal approach for Roy Hodgson to become their new manager within the next 48 hours.

The Fulham boss is the clear front-runner from a short list drawn up by Kop legend Kenny Dalglish and MD Christian Purslow, to be presented to the Anfield board this week.

The club's directors are certain to give the green light to make Hodgson their official target within the next two days, and approach his London club with an offer of compensation to make him the next Liverpool manager.

Former Inter Milan boss Hodgson has a one-year rolling contract with the Craven Cottage outfit, negotiated at the start of the just completed season. Crucially, it contains a clause which allows him to leave to join a top club for a compensation figure of around £2.5million.

The experienced coach has maintained a diplomatic silence over Liverpool interest in recent days, but he has made clear his desire to have one last opportunity with one of the Premier League's leading clubs.

Dalglish and Purslow have pinpointed six key qualities they require in their choice to succeed Rafa Benitez, and Hodgson is the candidate who ticks all the boxes.

His massive experience in Europe and extensive contacts within UEFA aligned to his winning record and diplomatic skills make him an attractive choice in a time of deep uncertainty at Anfield, as the club's American owners insufferably draw out the plan to sell their holding.

The other leading candidate on the short-list is Bayern Munich's Louis Van Gaal, but both Dalglish and Purslow recognise the difficulty in prising him away from the German champions, and Hodgson will be their first port of call.

No timescale has been set on the process of replacing Benitez, but sources within the club suggest that an appointment is imminent with the new man destined to be in place before the end of the month.

Hodgson has a contract to work for the BBC as pundit during the World Cup in South Africa, but he will be happy to break off from commentating to conclude any negotiations with the Anfield board, and will be in position to identify potential transfer targets.

Fulham want to keep their manager after he steered them to the UEFA Cup final in May, but Liverpool will not try to haggle and will meet the compensation figure in Hodgson's contract, meaning the London club will have no option but to allow him to leave.

The payment to Fulham will not prove too much of a barrier for Liverpool, not least because they are about to receive a similar level of compensation from Inter Milan for the Anfield backroom staff who are set to join Benitez in Italy.

He has negotiated to take several of his trusted lieutenants with him, including his Reds first team coach Mauricio Pellegrino, fitness coach Paco de Miguel and keeper coach Xavi Valero.
