They will get Villa next and then come after Xabi.

Based on all this cash they have, we should look to get no less than £30m.
Or just tell them to fuck off, and keep him.

Uh huh.

I read somewhere that United won 70 out of 72 points against teams placed 9 to 20 in the final standings in the Premier League. I have not verified this statistic. Ronaldo was their key to getting so many points against middle and lower opposition. They just could not handle him. Added to that his growing ability to score goals in key games in the CL - he will be missed, a lot.

PM Gordon Brown

"He's one of the most brilliant players in the world. I think people will be sad that he's lost to the game in England.

"At the same time, I know Sir Alex Ferguson well, and I know he'll have plans that will be rebuilding and renewing his team. And I would expect that Manchester United and English football will emerge not weaker, but emerge in a new way and probably stronger in the long run".

Shouldnt he be worrying about something else other than providing press statements on transfers.

If he says it, it's bound to be horse shit and not come true.

Ha ha, fucking hell. He's completely lost it.

It was obvious he was going after last summers escapades.
They will be the worse for it, without him last season they struggled.
My problem is that we may as well write this window off.
Madrid, City, Barcelona, Chelsea and now United with pots of money to chuck around.
I see Tevez as possibly our only high profile possibility.

Perhaps he's trying to use the Ronaldo business to push some kind of subliminal message about renewal, "what doesn't kill me makes me stronger" etc. His Mugabe-like desperation to cling to power would be sad if it didn't have such implications for the country as a whole.

Here's hoping the same happens at United when Ferguson's time to go finally arrives.

I'm sure someone posted the stats on here this time last year, when it first looked like Ronaldo was on his bike. There was a striking difference between their results with him in the side and their (clearly worse) results without him, despite the quality of their squad.

No doubt we'll have statements to the house to mourn this loss for Man Utd and English football. do me a favour...

Fantastic news!

For all those shitting themselves about who Man Utd spend their money on, consider this: can it really get any worse than three league titles, and two CL finals with one win in three years?

In case there is any confusion, the answer is "No, no it can't".

I don't think we'll see a direct replacement for Ronaldo, simply because there isn't one. It'll involve some changes for that Utd side and whilst they're guaranteed to bring in some quality players, we can at least hope that there will be *some* disruption whilst they get used to life without him.

As for Real Madrid, fucking hell... this could be their forward line next season:

------------- Villa
Robben ----- Kaka ----- Ronaldo

El Classico is going to be must viewing next time round.
all very well being good going forward.. with star players.. but their defence is shocking to say the least...

they need 1 or 2 defenders.. and a top notch holding midfielder to be the team they once where..

Also another note to add... this 80 mill for utd is spread over 7 years... so utd's rebuilding program won't be over night, there is no one anywhere they can get to replace him... Ferguson will have to consider changing his style, move Rooney back into the centre where his game thrives for England and build a team round him...

Next season the prem is up for grabs lads...

I think the poor deluded numpty wants people to draw parallels with him and his government - "we'll come through this stronger" kind of thing.

One could almost feel sorry for him, if it weren't for the damage he's doing as his time ebbs away.

Based over 7 years? Fuck that, he's essentially on loan.

20 now, and 6 years at 10mill. No wonder they've got shit loads to spend if its all like that.

Pretty much all the big ones are, which means Man utd will just do the same for whoever they go after.

The only exception is Man City. They snatched Robinho from Chelsea by offering to pay the whole 30m up front, and it's likely they'll do the same for any of their signings.

Apparently Everton turned down Ronaldo last night as he didn't understand their "peoples club" ethos.

ha ha ha

I'm with Oncy on this one.

Despite their league title I don't think this is the strongest United side we've seen in a while, as evidenced by us beating them home and away.

They've got plenty of issues to address - their goalkeping situation, centre midfield and now they need a winger. A top class 20 goal a season winger. There aren't many of them about. Ronaldo is a match winner and he's pulled games out of the bag for United on countless occasions, Peekay's post above is an excellent illustration of that.

They did get top dollar for him, 80m. The Glazers are going to be tempted to bank a lot of that money (considering their recent losses), how much I don't know but I'd be surprised if Fergie spends it all. How they address their issues with the money available remains to be seen.

The other thing is - Fergie's spending in the past few years - it hasn't exactly been great has it ?

Anderson - decent but not worth what was paid for him
Nani - expensive and anonymous
Hargreaves - a very expensive sicknote
Berbatov - a flop according to most United fans.

In the last three years they haven't spent very well, if that continues we're in luck.

Just seen this in Marcotti's latest article (may well have been mentioned before sorry):

The Spanish taxation system helps them, too. In an attempt to attract foreign multi-nationals to the country, the Spanish Government passed a law that said a non-national in the top tax bracket pays only 23 per cent tax for their first five years in the country. By comparison, as a result of the recent Budget, those in the top bracket in Britain pay 50 per cent.

That's a big fucking difference (I know I know, 50% of £200k a week's still not bad)

In the space of two weeks that oft-climed boast of "The Premier League is the best League in the World" has been fucking shattered.

United, the media favourite, got absolutely humped by Barcelona in Rome, and Madrid spend 140M odd on the best Brazilian alive and the Premier League's best player.

Viva Espana.

I remember Arshavin complaining a few weeks ago as he's taken a fair whack and affectively a pay cut in joining the Gooners.

Ronaldo's wages are even crazier than his transfer fee.

He starts at £9m(£175k per week) and he then gets a 25% increase every season over his 6 year contract! In 6 years time he will be getting over £27m or over HALF A MILLION A WEEK!!!!

Heres a question, given Stevie G's age would anyone take 80m for him?

I thought about it and for the first 30seconds it was a maybe, then I thought no even if he only gives us another 3 seasons we couldn't replace him

Its a tough one though?

In a few years we could do with a shit load of money to replace the likes of him and Carragher

i hate the thought of Gerrard getting old

Same. I really hope he wins AT LEAST one league title before he retires. No player deserves it more than him.
