Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants three new signings of Daniel Sturridge or Phillipe Coutinho's quality
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants to add ‘three or four players’ to his squad this summer as part of his next phase of rebuilding. Rodgers says he will compile a list of three transfer targets for every key position in need of reinforcement and avoid a repeat of last summer’s costly transfer window.

Liverpool were left without striking support for Luis Suárez when all the focus shifted to recruiting Clint Dempsey. Rodgers wanted to make a more through assessment of Daniel Sturridge before agreeing a permanent deal – a £12 million signing he was more comfortable with in January.
The contrast with the last, productive transfer window has seen recent form transformed into Champions League qualification standard, but Liverpool still find themselves with too much to do after conceding so many points in those early months.

Rodgers believes he needs two quality players for each position, and says additions of similar class to Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho will make Liverpool more competitive next season.
“There is no doubt there is a natural rebuilding that will come with the likes of Jamie Carragher retiring. I am happy with the squad if I can then put another three or four quality players to it,” said Rodgers.
“It is quality we are after, not quantity. We see Coutinho and Sturridge's quality in January, if we bring in another three or four players of that quality and add that to what we have got then we have got a strong squad.

“You want between 20 and 22 players. I'm talking about two in every position and your three goalkeepers. Then below that having young players who can support that.
“Of course you have an ideal target, but we are getting to a situation now where, for me, you have to have three players and if one doesn't come off you have to be comfortable with the other two. If you get one of those you are happy. There is a lot of terrific work going on with the scouting department getting those lists together.

“We never had that in the summer but there were some key positions we needed support in and what I didn't want to do was waste the club's money. I like to be extensive and know what we are bringing in, but also we did not have the time and that was the big issue. We are much better placed now. There is great collaboration that goes on between all the departments. January was a productive window for us and hopefully if we do the similar in the summer then it's going to be a real good place for us.”
Rodgers will consider sending youngsters such as Suso – a fixture in the line-up six months ago – on loan to gather more experience.

Last week, Rodgers gave Raheem Sterling a week off as he wants him to use the next few months to refresh himself in preparation for the start of next season.
Unless Liverpool can somehow complete a late surge into the top four, Rodgers’ transfer kitty will again be around the £20 million mark unless he raises more via sales, the inevitable consequence of missing out on the Champions League in testing financial times. His obvious priority is two centre halves to replace Carragher and the out-of-favour Martin Skrtel.

“I have had a real good year with the young players to assess where they are at with their development,” said Rodgers. “Suso has clearly shown he has been a very good cover player for us this season, the longer plan for him we have to have a look. Does he actually have to go and play somewhere for a year and get experience?

Does he need to show he can go and get goals and create goals and then we know what we have? Raheem has shown he can play at this level, but I gave him a week off to get away from football mentally and physically. If the young players are good enough they will be involved in the squad, but I have to look at the individual plan to see if they can be here.

“Obviously, there might be people who aren't playing who might want to think about going elsewhere, but at the moment it's a strong squad.”

Ive actually got faith in Mr Rodgers buying the right players.

Im very happy with his spending so far. Allen, Borini, Sturridge and Coutinho. Super stuff.
Im very very excited about next year.

Gonna be interesting to see who we let go as well. With last year's failures such as Enrique, Downing, Henderson improving by leaps and bounds this season, I'm actually optimistic that even if we have to sell someone, they'll actually cost something instead of the peanuts we get in return.

I'd say Assaidi has been a decent buy as well for the price he came for. Some might look at him not playing much and write it off as a wasted purchase, but I see it otherwise.

He was brought in at a time when we were very thin in the wide positions, with only Cole, Downing and Sterling to call upon. Assaidi gave us an extra body we could throw into the fray, but a more experienced and tested one, albeit in a different league, as opposed to the untested Sterling.

He looks a bit of a luxury now that Downing has stepped up, Sterling has shown he can play, and we've got Coutinho in, but at the start of the season, he provided us with a skilful warm body.

Borini seems to be the only meh so far. It feels like progress, but we do need to build on Suarez, as the concern is without him, we'd be back at square one.

The players he's bought so far are alright and he's got something out of the struggling ones he inherited but the only thing that worries me is that he hasn't bought a defensive player yet. I just hope he hasn't got the Wenger gene.

Rumors in la marca today that Madrid are monitoring Rodgers this summer as a replacement for Maureen. Maureen recommended him. Nd of course he's proficent in the lingo. They are Prepared to offer a large budget and pay package to bring him in. I don't think he'd go. He's just begun his project.

Serious? No way ... That's crazy.

We need to get two CBs (replace Skrtel + Carra) & either a goalkeeper (if Reina goes) or another big time CM

Rodgers hasn't even won anything yet, I can't see Madrid going down the Carlos Queiroz route again. I also think there's more likelihood of them getting Wenger. Most fans think he's carried them as far as they can go, so new pastures might be foreseeable?

Ashley Williams, Hatem Ben Afra, Christian Ericksen, Stefan de Vrij, Lazar Markovic & Bruno Martins are the names seemingly doing the rounds.

Rodgers to Madeid ha. And why the fuck would we bring in Williams when he has openly spoken of his detest for Suarez

Aye, I can just see Mourinho now as he is being bombed out of Madrid for falling out with the board, being called back in 'Just a sec before you fuck off choo miserable son of a horses bastard!! Who should we replace you with to compete in the league that choo jos fail een!!'
kthxby.

I like that, strong message of intent from Rodgers. And I agree with it too, that's how you build a title-winning side.

I wouldn't be too surprised to all of Skrtel (£10M), Coates (£5), Lucas (£12M😉, Pacheco (£2M) and perhaps Borini (£6M) leave as well as Carroll (£12M) of course.

That should give us in the region of £70M to buy from when you add the £20M from the budget.

--> Top class CB/DM/AM and perhaps a few bargain buys for the CB and striker positions too.

I'm sorry - has he signed for Chelsea or what?

Recent reports suggested that a £10m deal had been agreed between the two clubs, but Markovic rubbished the claims.

He told Serbian paper Sportski Zurnal: "It is true. I was in London, I toured around London and I was also at Stamford Bridge.
"I met my team-mate from national team Branislav Ivanovic, we talked a little bit.
"I also met people from Chelsea, but it is not true that I have signed anything yet or something like that. There is no contract, not a even a pre-contract.

"I had a great time there but it is far from being over."

Currently one of the most highly rated young players in Europe. Yeah he's good alright, but you never know.

Well maybe we'll get stick in to signing him while someone else is fannying about changing managers - for a change.

Sounds like Suso isn't breaking into the first team any time soon.
He's telling Suso that he'll be an important player if he can get involved in more goals, whether it be with us or out on loan.
Perfectly understandable, as he unfortunately hasn't been able to do that yet in his first team cameos.
I still think he could become a great player, and Rodgers I'm sure feels that way too. A good reply from Suso in his last reserve game (U21?) too.

Skrtel's sale should pay for a new centre half. Now might be a good time to move Downing on, and £10m or so for him and Assaidi should mostly cover a replacement's cost. We'll get £10m or so for Carroll. That should leave around £30m to play with - I'd spend £20m on a new striker and the rest on either a DM or a reserve centre half. Maybe we need both, I'm not sure.

That'd leave us with a really good squad I think.

I think a CB is top of his shopping list. It will be interesting if his next consideration is less identifying positions that need bolstering, but potential worldies to improve the team's quality.

Agree about Downing. He has done pretty well in the second half of this season but he will never be great, and surely better to sell a player when he is playing well and people might want to buy him.

I have doubts about whether we will get 10 million for Carroll. We are very clearly desperate to get rid of him. Why would any club offer a decent amount of money for him when they could probably take him on loan for no fee?
