Roberto Firmino - signed the silky swine

The first thing you'd need is examples. Firmino isn't really a plausible candidate because he's done so well in Germany.

He's an exciting player of a type that Brazilian football hasn't produced too many of recently. Of late their central midfielders have tended to be 'holders' who sit and allow the full-backs to push forward.

Lucas is different. He's a big, blonde figure whose power and physical strength comes with attacking ability.

He can pass well and loves to rumble forward. He gets on the scoresheet both with blistering shots from range and from bursting beyond the strikers

That's Tim Vickery describing Lucas. Our one.

I do think Rafa pretty much dismantled Lucas as a player, and re-built him as a useful robot. That penalty he won in the derby - when now would he ever get so close to the goal? He didn't even start to realise his potential before Rafa remodelled him. He's been an artificial player ever since. Done quite well, considering.

he needs reporting under the trade description act the cunt!

Indeed. Lucas did arrive with the kind of reputation that Vickery (perhaps a little over-dramatically) describes, and it wasn't just coming from Vickery. Rafa altered him completely as a player.

There is too much positivity in this thread. I think we need some balance but Modo is not available, so here is some balance.

1. He is overpriced. People were saying Lallana was overpriced but Firmino's stats are not significantly better and he will cost more.

2. Another player from a midtable club. Okay its a German midtable club and he is Brazilian but if his name was Rob Firm and he was from Stoke I doubt many here would be excited. For all we know he is another Stewart downing.

3. He doesn't have any experience playing in European competitions or at a top club.

4. He was wanted by Liverpool's scouting team, so its safe to assume he is no good.

5. He is not ambitious enough. If he wanted to win trophies, he would have gone to a club like City or Chelsea but he is coming to Liverpool. Why can't be ambitious like Sterling?

6. If he is any good, he will be playing in Madrid in 2 seasons.

*googles how to tie a noose*

1. There's a lot more to stats than goals and assists. This isn't fantasy football. And if you think using stats to guide purchases consists of looking at goals and assists totals you're a moron of the highest order. One season proves nothing either way. And Lallana is 27

2. Ignorance and snobbery. Standard fare from your average football fan.

3. Doesn't matter.

4. Fair point

5. He's taking the best offer open to him to a top 10 European club.

6. Maybe

The one mandanoti reckons... Agents pay the Brazilian FA to put some average players in the squad to up their value. Now this has certainly happened with sponsors before, to up their client's reputation, but he's alleging agents are also doing it to up the cash they get for transfers.

I'm not saying he's right, just telling you what he thinks. My opinion is it's certainly plausible.
You know what, this theory would also explain the fucking endless parade of shite players given caps for England too.

That list makes my eyes bleed. What a crock of shite. I'm not wasting my time spelling out the glaringly obvious holes in those 'points'', as I'm sure folk here can do that for themselves.

Let's just also ignore the fact that he has been directly involved in two thirds of the goals for his team in the last 66 games.

I have to say, I'm not overwhelmed by the signing .When you saw Suarez's Ajax video and Torres' Atletico video you could see the potential for a truly worldclass player. Firminho looks no more than decent. Obviously not everyone is going to turn out as those two, but we've paid a similar price so its a worthy comparison. I'm also not sure if he's a striker or an AM. If we're not playing him as a striker then a lot of questions need to be answered because we are so well stocked there.

There's a lot going for him, though. Players from Germany usually adjust quickly. He knows Coutinho. His stats are decent. I'm confident he will be good. Whether he has another gear to him we'll have to see.

I have faith in this signing..

He looks decent.. and his stats are too

His workrate is what set him apart from other Rodgers Era signings..

Something that was lacking from many last season

You should probably ignore that fact

I asked...I'm kinda intrigued by the idea of agent / FA corruption here... but, I want names, I want examples, gimme a smoking gun.

"In March 2013, the former president of Brazillian midtable club Sport-Recife, Luciano Bivar, confessed to having paid U$500.000,00 for the selection of Leomar to the Confederations Cup in 2001. This was done to put Leomar, a below mediocre DM, in evidence. Sure enough, Leomar was sold right after the tournament. Luciano also said that this is very common place and even hinted 'Ask Scolari how many calls from agents he gets per day'.

...I mentioned Paulinho and said... he's currently on loan at Watford or something which would seem to be be a great case... but then he was voted like 3rd best player at the Confedetations cup in 2013, so it's more likely he just can't adapt his game and he'd probs boss it in Brazil, no?

"As for Paulinho, there was some clever marketing around him. Not many people know this, but the former owner of a 50% stake in Paulinho was no other than Fat Ron, through his front company, "Nine". Fat Ron is a pundit in Brazil's largest T.V channel and suddenly began praising Paulinho, calling him a "modern" CM like Xavi or Iniesta. Brazillians began to believe this and he was called to the Confeds Cup, where Brazil became massively overrated after defeating Spain 3-0 in the final(no one knew that the Tiki Taka generation was dead and gone by then, this would only become clear 1 year later, during the WC).

Anyway, that Fat Tranny banger made around 8 million quid when Paulinho was sold to Tottenham. Not saying Firmino is going to turn out horrible, he is certainly better than Douglas Costa and cost around the same amount of money, but he is *NO* Luís Suarez."

Time will tell - One thing I do know is that no matter what - We are certainly better at picking up good buys than fucking shithouse spurs.
