Anyone know why he's featured so little in preseason? I would have expected him to be in our first team against Spurs, but it looks like Yossi's being groomed for the LW role at the moment. Even Babel came on ahead of Albert against Atletico. Has he got some sort of injury or is Rafa perhaps thinking of trading him in for an uprange model? Riera's value must have gone up in Spain during the last season, after all, with him playing CL football and finding a place in Spain's first XI. Might Valencia want him in part-exchange for Silva?

Just a thought...

He's injured 2 weeks out.

Oh. So much for this thread then...

We've had a couple players with disrupted pre-seasons it seems... unfortunate really. I hope the team can give them a relatively comfortable return to full match sharpness.

If we were to sign an upgrade e.g Silva, I'd like us to keep Riera as a squad option as Babel can't be trusted.

Got a few worrying crocks at the moment.

I think the point is that we couldn't afford Silva without cashing in on Albert. Babel's current transfer value is probably not much above zero.

I dunno, I doubt that's the case, but no one has the facts.

I would say we have in the kitty:
12mill from Keane
30mill from Xabi
3mill from Leto
3mill from Arbeloa
Plus what ever small amount (10-20mill) that Rafa was given pre-window

That's 60-70mill of which we've spent about 30. So we should have plenty left for someone like Silva if Rafa wanted him, thought we needed that sort of player, and thought he was good value for money.

We havent got 40 million to spend.

Can people stop including money from selling Keane in their calculations. We made NOTHING selling Keane. We simply didnt have to pay the 18m we still owed for him. If anything we lost 12m.
20m kitty
36m from sales.

Of which.
8m has gone on Johnson
16m on Aquilani. (although it depends how its viewed, it may be seen as 5m in this season as the other instalments are due in other windows)

That leaves 32m. (+11m if we have only paid 5m for Aquilani) However with the yanks having to pay 60m more off the debt its safe to say they arent giving rafa 43m to spend regardless of prior agreements. But that doesnt mean he wont get 20m for silva or something/somewhere in that ballpark.
If he does he does, and if he doesnt then fuck it. Team, management, fans all have to get behind the players and unite for this tilt. We've a terrific squad and good cover everywhere. Just look at our first 11.
Reina - 20m
Carragher - 15m
Agger - 15m
Johnson - 17m
Mascherano - 25m
Aquilani - 20m
Kuyt - 20m
Riera - 10m
Gerrard - 50m
Torres - 50m
we've got Yossi, Babel, skrtel, Lucas, Dossena, Insua, Cavalieri, Aurelio....christ we've got the options.
Stop fretting about-
IF we have money.
WHO we will get
IF there will be injuries.
If Rafa has the money he will get the players in, if he doesnt, we wont, and we will still be there or there abouts.

Ps-at the start of this window i would have bitten your hand off for a 17m right back, a 20m midfielder and 60m less debt! That puts us 97m better off than we were in may.

Minus a £30m midfielder etc
True but we've moved quickly to replace him with a younger and more attacking player.

I'm not arguing the toss Oncy, I'd have discounted the Keane money too, but how did it work?

I read that we bought him for £20m and sold him for £15m, making a £5m loss for the privilege of having him for 6 months.

I think people need to quit having hopes of a Silva like signing, I'd wager that we'd probably have £15m tops to find that extra signing or two that we need, and if we're being serious about spending in the region of £6m on a centre back, then it doesn't leave much hope for us bringing in that star signing.

Lets face it, Rafa wants players signed ASAP in preseason, the Alonso departure made things difficult which is why Aquilani was brought in late in the day, and injuries have led to us looking around for a centre back, but if we'd have had any initial thoughts of going for Silva I think we'd have moved well before now and we'd have heard about it.

Quite often wonder why you bother as it will fall on deaf ears. We have the players in the first team, and we have the players in the sqaud, the debate on there quality is something else. We are going to have to make do, and get the best out of the squad players, that's were benitez needs to focus his attention on. Getting someone like silva must now be considered a luxury we don't seem to be able to afford!!!

United - Much weaker.
Chelsea - The same, arguably stronger but new manager.
Arsenal - Weaker
Liverpool - The same, arguably stronger.
Whats not to be buzzing about. We dont even need to gain 4 points. United wont get the same total. If we match last year we'll win the league.

I get it Andy but I think Xabi's absence will harm us early in the season and we've seen what happens when we don't start well. I don't think Aqualani will be rushed into anything either considering he's had surgery. While Lucas is a good footballer and can do a job I don't think he'll be consistent week in week out.

Lucas WILL do a consistent job week in week out. If that doesnt work out Gerrard WILL fill in for 4 measly weeks and Yossi WILL prove his worth in the hole.

we're also arguably weaker with alonso gone and his replacement out injured for 4 weeks (optimist), 8 weeks (realist) upto February to find his feet (rage....ist).

johnson is a clear step up imo. spurs away will be a sign of how our season will play out with the squad.

many of us wanted to see doseena, babel, lucas and voronin all sold - all are still here, how about they can't get any worse oncy will that do for optimism?
Good effort. But we cant be weaker. We have 'arguably' a weaker cm. But i dont agree. And we have 'certainly' a better rb. So even a cynic would have to concede at the minimum its the same.
I dont hold much hope for Voronin and thats the truth, but Babel, Dossena, Yossi, Lucas, Degen etc i believe will all play their parts this year.

we have zero transfer money this year and next year because we lost £40m and they have to repay £60m to the banks so everything is going towards that hence Rafa is going to be pissed off and will only get money from sales, eventually the situation might get worse like portsmouth and he wont even get that though he'll resign by then.

we need new owners hopefully by next year..
