Reina insists Liverpool will have to wait another THREE years to launch title challenge

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has pleaded for patience from the club's fans and admitted it could take three years before they challenge for the title.

The Anfield outfit have undergone a total restructuring in the last 12 months, with many of their preferred starting XI having only been at the club since last year.

However a season that started with a splurge on the likes of Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson has yet to sparkle with the club seventh, six points off the coveted Champions League places.

Eye on the ball: Pepe Reina is confident Liverpool will challenge for top honours... but it will take another three years

And Reina believes even securing a top four place will be an enormous task.

The Spaniard said: 'I think it will be two or three more years before we are ready to challenge for the Premier League or Champions League again.

'Hopefully it will be as soon as possible but we are within touching distance of the Carling Cup final.

'We have not won a trophy since 2006 and it is very important to the club to collect some silverware this season. At Liverpool, winning trophies is vital and we have a great chance of doing that in the Carling Cup.

'Of course, we are still working hard to qualify for the Champions League next season but we know it will be difficult. Liverpool is a club that is used to winning.'

Liverpool last won the title 22 years ago under the guidance of Kenny Dalglish. The same man is now leading the latest charge on the summit, and has largely avoided any criticism despite a stuttering campaign.

The Reds have drawn eight games this season, many of which have come against so-called lesser opposition, and slumped to defeat at Bolton last weekend.

And Reina added: 'We are a good team, especially tactically, but perhaps we have lacked a little imagination to win enough matches. We have failed to finish off games and dropped points in matches Liverpool would expect to win.

'On our day, we are a match for any team and we have the players. But we must show more quality. This is what the history of Liverpool demands.'

I think we have a lean squad with solid if not spectacular players. we need to build on that base with around 3 or 4 quality players. I also think in 3 years some of the kids I rate very highly will either be in the first team or on the fringe of the first team allowing more of the budget to be used on specific players. 3 years is when I would expect us to challenge for the league and by challenge I mean within 6 points of the leaders going into april.

Three years minimum.

And in that time we need to somehow hold onto Reina and Suarez.

I made this point in another thread but in three years time half of this squad will either be gone or in their 30's.

The management have a tough job on their hands... well, they do if they continue buying shit.

Couldn't really give a shit what Pepe has to say about our chances in the coming years.

Football can change so quickly that making such long-term predictions is pretty pointless.

And if Pepe decides to leave then let him. He's a top keeper but i honestly feel the adulation he gets from a lot of Reds is OTT. He can be replaced.

I made a conscious decision not to be a shit fan but the team & performance is driving me to it.
