Reasons to be Cheerful..

Nobody disputes his kicking ability. What everyone - apart from you - was concerned about was his ability to deal with high balls and corners.

And so far, he's looked a fucking disaster area and flapped like a divvy at every single high ball he has had to deal with, or stayed rooted to his line.

I agree Klopp should stick with him, but unless that part of his game improves, he's useless to us.

The situation is up in the air too.
Ming as dodgy as he is was given a second chance with Karius getting the injury in pre season.
He done very little wrong and got dropped.
It's a messy situation and putting all our eggs in the Karius basket could be very risky.

Early days, I know, but he makes Mignolet look like Neuer. Hes flapping all over the place, dropping balls, can't kick long, makes really bad decisions for short passing (actually he's really bad at deciding when to play long and when to play short) and he doesn't claim enough balls when he should be.

It's a fucking huge cause for concern, early days or not.

What is the issue with goalkeepers?

Fine, you could say that Liverpool haven't gotten the recruitment right since Reina, signing keepers that can only do half of the job. I know he's been a bit of a punchline at times, but could Achterberg or at least the coaching be the problem?

How has Simon Luc Hildebert Mignolet not managed to improve his distribution in 3 years? The shot stopping side of his game is largely fine and his performance there has been fairly consistent since he was signed, but I couldn't really point to an improvement in any other area.

Personally think any Liverpool fan that is downbeat/negative about us right now needs their head testing.

I'm not being negative but I'd hold off getting too carried away. This run of fixtures coming up look favourable but it'd be SO Liverpool to go and make a mess of it during these kinds of games. Cautious is probably where I'm at.

I know we won the game but we were poor v Swansea and we all watched in horror as Burnley beat us with ease. Those two games give me enough reason to not get carried away.

Pretty much Hanserns stock answer for any player, signed by any manager, at any any time.

Surely even you can see there is concern.

That goal kick in injury time, that went out for a throwing was shocking

Surely it's not unreasonable to give a player who has played FIVE GAMES for us a little time to settle in? I don't hold out hope that a 5m signing from a mid table German club will be a world beater but to write him off after a few weeks is crazy.

Hyperbole or what.

My own view is that this has gone beyond "could". Such a consistent pattern HAS to be down to the coaching and Achterberg's head honcho in that area. Regrettably Klopp said some complimentary stuff about him a while ago, so we appear to be stuck with him for the foreseeable.

Achterberg was promoted to first team coach in 2011 after a couple of years with the academy. In that time he has overseen a general decline or stagnation in all the keepers he has worked with, while no keepers have made the step up from the academy.

Klopp has praised his work ethic and said he trusts him with the keepers. I do note though, that Bruce Grobbelaar made some rather unflattering comments about Achterberg (http://www.thisisanfield.com/2015/12/grobbelaar-questions-liverpool-goalkeeper-coach/) shortly before Klopp's endorsement - I wonder if that prompted Klopp's comments in any way.

Edited to add a bit for @Hansern

While I agree that Karius needs time and is still a young goalkeeper, the above should still be concerning.

What is concerning about Karius is the fact that Mignolet has made no progress in the time he's been here. If Karius' early problems turn out to be flaws in his game and not just new-club-nerves; can we really rely on the goalkeeping staff to be able to turn it around given the evidence we have over the last five years?

Karius does come off his line more than Ming and his distribution is a load better than Ming's too.

None of that matters if he's going to miss every cross and spill every shot, but just noting he's defo better at those two things.

I think the fears over the suitability of Karius as our keeper is well founded, yet I have this irrational and unfounded belief that he is going to come good.
If he doesn't then Mignolet is not the answer.

Just out of interest, would have said that Mignolet had the potential to be the answer (to Renia's decline) when he signed in 2013?

No agenda behind this question, genuinely curious.

Either way, he deserves more than 3 games. Flapping at a few crosses or not coming off his line is surley something that can be worked on or will disapear with confidence and after a settling in periode.

I would have been hopeful more than optimistic but I remember that first game against Stoke and despite saving that penalty he looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights
I had hoped that was just first match day nerves.
My belief that Karius will come good has no basis from what we have seen of him in a Liverpool shirt so I cannot rationalize it.
Like every else's gut feeling I guess they are occasionally right and often wrong

Any one remember how shit De-gea was when he first signed for the scum? He was awful at just about everything..

He is now probably one of the best keepers in Europe

Give the guy a break, it's early days..

If he's still flapping and starts costing us points by December I'll be worried, but ill wait until then, almost every young foreign keeper who comes to the premier league struggles with crosses in ther first season, this isn't anything new.

The De Gea comparisons are stupid.
He was the best young keeper in the world at the time and went for a chunk of money.
Karius went for 5 million.
In the current climate that's absolute peanuts.
If he turns out to be half the keeper De Gea is we'll have got our money's worth but comparing them is ridiculous.

The issue I have would not be with Karius per se, it is with the coaching staff and whether they can improve the flaws in his game - because they haven't been able to with Mignolet.

I think he's a good young goalkeeper with potential, I'm not overly confident that we can unlock that though within the current set up.

As if the fee paid has anything to do with a players ability or quality.
Karius went for 4,7 mill because of a release clause. Without that we'd be paying a lot more.

That has absolutly nothing to do with him becoming a great keeper for us or not.

Nobody is comparing him to De Gea either, it just proves that players take time to settle. Even the best young players in the World....
Karius was voted the second best GK in Germany after Neuer, so he's obviously got some talent.

Players can learn and develop. That is what Klopp is all about. He doesnt sign stars, he makes them. All players have developed well under him so far, and Klopp made a statement last night by using him. If a clean sheet didn't have anything to do With him and he made no saves I Guess we are fine. If we scored monday night we would have won, and People are nagging on about the goalie? And then refer tot he bitters as the bitters?? Give me a break.

Karius was the best young keeper in Germany.. De-Gea was the best young keeper in Spain, no one really talked about the world at that point...

The comparisons are there, given how they both started.. However my point was more about giving the guy a chance to settle.. See how he is after Christmas, then we can start making better judgments..

Some fair points in here, but surprised no one's mentioned the biggest reason to be optimistic which is that we're probably gonna win the league.

I was just recalling while watching the Barca/Man City game that someone on here was certain that we were signing Neymar back in the day.
Which made me a little sad, realizing how ludicrous it is to even think, now or then, that we might be capable of signing a world class player.
But then I remembered we signed a much coveted, world class manager and suddenly life seemed a little brighter
