Realistic Striker Targets come Jan?

I was listening to Five Lives World football phone-in (last night) and Landon Donovan was linked with us. No idea on the credibility of this link.

oh, groan...

now if only we had had a punt on that little welsh fella in august who would "never be happy sitting on a bench as cover for a main striker" ***FUCK IT***

Darren Bent would have been a good signing I think we can all agree now

Its all going Bollox folks, so so so worried

I really doubt if we would actually be in for him anyhow but that is definately that

Valencia star agrees new deal to end Liverpool hopes

Juan Mata has ended any speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool by agreeing a new deal with Valencia.

Recent media reports had suggested the 21-year-old could be a target for Liverpool and Barcelona with talks stalling with the Spanish club.

While Mata’s contract has yet to be extended, he has received a significant increase in salary. The minimum release fee clause also remains the same, valued at around 90million euros.

The winger broke into the Valencia side in 2007 and has impressed in his two season at the club scoring five goals already this season.

Mata’s father and agent, Juan Manuel, said: "This is the price for the excellent two seasons that the kid is developing at the club.

"We are satisfied after the last meetings."

Sporting director Fernando Gomez was quick to play down any speculation that Mata could soon leave the Mestalla.

"We have not received any formal propositions. I do not say that will be the same in the future".

The loyalty these players show to Valencia is admirable.

However that's one target wiped off our summers transfer list.

Mauro Zárate's brother and agent, Sergio, claims that the striker is less than happy with how things are shaping up at Lazio.

The Aquilotti are currently 16th in Serie A, and their current predicament is not sitting well with Zárate.

"Mauro isn't happy at Lazio, he didn't expect that he was going to have to fight with the team for avoiding the relegation," Sergio told Sky Sports.

"The president had said to us that he had built a team for the Champions League but then he didn't do anything for making it improve.

"In correct moment we will analyze if the conditions for staying exist or if we accept one of the offers that the president will receive."

Does anybody still disagree that we should have signed Darren Bent by now? Who were the bell cheddars who argued against it in the summer?

10mil for Darren Bent last summer was always a bargain. The bloke scores 15 goals a season for Charlton and Spurs, he'd have a field day with us. Obv he's not foreign/Spanish/Championship Manager enough but in terms of goals in the real World, he was easily worth a 10mil punt.
6CM deemed him shit in the summer.

Me and Anita, and maybe one or two other championed his signing but were largely in the minority.

"Not good enough for LiverpooL". Christ, and when we've got Voronin on the books...
All the Spurs fans I know, well all three of them were glad to see the back of Bent, according to them on the Spurs forums he was there Voronin, he got slated left right and centre for his all round play.

Personally I wasn't against the signing, he would've been a gamble likewise with Bentley two players who many deemed good enough for Liverpool but not for Spurs but sure we didn't have £10 million to spend on a forward so it hardly matters.

Bent was desperate to leave Spurs because of a lack of first-team football and stated he needed to play week in-week out to force his way into the England squad in world cup year. To that end he was prepared to take a pretty hefty wage cut for the promise of a regular start at Sunderland.

He was hardly going to come to Anfield to sit on the bench in hope Torres might get injured was he? Why on earth are people still banging on about him? Most on here would have taken him if it was at all possible but were more realistic about his reasons for a move.

Some players do to play first team football regularly to perform and I do suspect Bent is one of these, but the fact remains that he would have played more games than Torres last season, and maybe even this one, who knows. Torres is more injury prone than we're prepared to accept.

Also, if you've got 2 decent strikers, Rafa will be inclined to play 4-4-2 at times, adding to the number of games he could have started. And his record as Charlton and now Sunderland more than outweighs his torrid time at Spurs.

I just don't buy into this argument we can't keep decent strikers happy at Liverpool if they're not named Fernando.

He would have been a good buy, but sadly no money was made available.

I don't doubt he'd have been an excellent buy for us and Rafa might have well experimented with a 4-4-2 (though arguable whether Torres Bent would be suited playing together), but I just cannot see how Bent would have considered coming to Anfield given he'd hardly played for 18 months and was desperate for guaranteed starts. He'd have likely chosen Sunderland over us anyway.

I'd still like Balotelli here.

Wouldn't disagree with your first two paras, Squiggs, but the problem would/will be convincing any strikers we may try to sign. Crouchy wasn't having any and I don't believe Bent would have either.

Balotelli has ability but would be as much of a risk as Babel. We need to be on a more even keel overall IMO before we sign players like that.

Pavlychenko and Van der Vaart would be a very good january.

RVN would be excellent aswell.

First thing is what is realistic? Don't you mean cheap or for nothing? Anyway you get what you pay for generally in this game and Ngog is proving himself to be a decent back up and we also have Kuyt. Let's do our real business in the summer, unless there's an emergency.

And seeing as we are quids in with a world record shirt deal, surely some of that can be earmarked for a marquee signing? A Kun Aguero anyone?

As for Darren Bent, no thanks. He couldn't hack it at Spurs so why should anyone think he would at Liverpool? Sunderland is his level. He hasn't got the technical ability or temperament to succeed at the highest level, in my opinion.

He's one of the better strikers in the Premiership

That's a pretty high level

And he's better than anyone Spurs have

'Arry Redknapp doesn't share your opinion. And no way is he better than Defoe. Or even Crouch. Bent just has no 'presence', why would anyone want him in our squad? He's a football equivalent of a wet dish cloth.

If I could take one striker within our financial reach, I'd take him, I think he's got everything we need, both as a stand in for and to occasionally play alongside, Torres.

Bent would have been decent for us if we played him week in, week out... but if he was on the bench one week, out on the left the next.. etc etc... you know how it is... would he be the same player he is at Sunderland or would he be the same player Spurs fans didn't rate at Spurs?

Bent is better than Crouch.

What that means in the grand scheme of things I'm not sure.

Which one do you think Fabio will take out of the two (if any) to South Africa?

Heskey will be going to SA, so it really means fuck all
ha ha Good point, if irrelevant. Heskey as at least scored for England and is very important tactically. Bent has nothing of tactical importance to offer and he's flopped every chance he's got, because he's not really that good.

It's the opposite of irrelevant

I was talking about Crouch V Bent. In that context it is to me.

Heh.. I love Crouch but I think you're being massively harsh on Bent, it's not like he's had loads of chances (for England), and he got a fair few I'd wager while he was at Spurs and getting treated like shite (he also had a lengthy injury didn't he?). I think he's a really good striker, his goalscoring record is very good and he's the type of level we should really expect as back up, as in enough to also push for a first team place.

How is he going to push for a first team place? We have Fernando Torres up front and we play with one striker. If it was about goal scoring record, we'd have taken Owen back on a free. I expect better as a back up striker and so does Rafa too I suspect.
