Well this thread doesn't read like people were resigned!! Or even somewhat realistic.

What we see in Europe now is 4 or 5 just incredibly strong sides, better than any national team, who are all capable of hammering the rest on a given day. Look at what Bayern did to a very decent Roma side last night.

That has to be recognised before we even attempt to analyse tonight's match.

But that's what I was saying. Certainly its how I felt. I was very fearful before the game.

Yeah I know that's how you felt. But you also said everyone else was resigned to it, which is a bit of an odd claim given the wailing hysterics seen throughout the thread, and the tub-thumping before the match.

That always just seemed silly to me. We were always likely to lose - better to approach the game with that in mind and hope for more.

Have you watched every game bar Spurs we've played this season? This is not down to getting beaten by Real.

I believe we'll improve.
It's a new team and it takes time to gell. Last season's team had a full season together when the season started (well, a couple of them were there for half of the season before. And it took some time before that team really started to look good (we had some poor games in the first half of last season too).
The current squad has about 8 new players in it, it misses last season's best player as well as our other top attacker and has no decent replacement yet.
It definitely needs time as well as strengthening up front. I believe top 4 is achieveable.

Yeah I have a feeling that a lot of the bravado was keeping up face.

This was all Brendan's fault for wearing brown shoes with his black suit.

Oh well this will make it all the sweeter when we beat Real in the final in May.

Positives:

-Moreno played very solid, I think he will be Liverpool's left back for a long time.

-Balotelli's hold up play was improved, took on defenders well at times but didn't get a ton of help.

-I thought Lovren played much better than he has been in recent weeks. A run of good form for him might be just what we need to hold us over until Daniel Sturridge returns.

-Raheem didn't look out of place at all against world class opposition.

-Brendan playing the striker-less formation was interesting second half, I wonder if we will ever see that in the league against a team that tries 10 men behind the ball at all times.

-Can played quite decent in his cameo.

Balotelli looked OK at best today.

Having said that our defence was FUCKING SHIT yet again.

3 goals conceded had nothing to do with Mario ... Ronaldo's genius aside, the other 2 goals were just fucking pathetic defending.

And the first 15 minutes aside, the team was lethargic - all 11 players ... fuck all movement off the ball, on the ball to slow, cheap turnovers and most of the time we weren't even under any pressure when they occurred.

A couple of things I disagree with here :
I didn't think the defence was shit at all. Failing to take the quality of the opposition into account is a common failing on SCM. I though RM were superb in both their passing and pressing, they gave us a lesson in both, and absolutely clinical in their finishing in the first half.
The first goal was a brilliant pass from James followed by a world-class finish from Ronaldo.
For the second I simply failed to see how Benzema could score with a header from there - you won't see a better header and I can't blame any of the defence for that either - RM pile players into the box when attacking and we were over-whelmed.
The third was the only goal where we fucked up badly, IMHO. Ming and Skrtel the main culprits.

Midfield did a very decent job but again it was the quality of RMs passing and switching play from side to side that caused many of the issues we had.

Attack was again the main cause for concern. Allen & Coutinho were both very unlucky not to score but Balo was way out of his depth and our movement was very poor in the first half.
We looked better in the 2nd with players that can run at and beat defenders, personally I'd have kept Coutinho on though as, although he lost possession from time to time, he looked dangerous, far more so than Markovic when he replaced Henderson. Sterling, Lallana, Coutinho, Allen & Can may have had got a goal.

Yeah, I'm not gonna watch it...
Why would you not watch it ? It was interesting at least to see how we, and certain players in particular, faired against the CL Champions. Their front 6 were frightening on paper ... and in actuality !

Ming : 6.5. A couple of very good saves along with his now customary brain-fart
Moreno : 5. Compared to recent performances he was disappointing in both attack & defence (all 3 goals came from his side).
Lovren : 7. I thought he did quite good against maybe the best front 6 in the world (Bale missing aside).
Skrtel : 6. Partly at fault for the 3rd goal but otherwise see Lovren above.
Johnson : 7.5. He was up against currently the best player in the world and was not in any way embarrassed. In fact Ronaldo switched to the right for a time, which brought the first goal.
Gerrard : 6.5. Did well in possession and fought to track runners. Noticeably tired in the last 10-15 mins when we could have attacked far more but seem to settle for 0-3.
Henderson : 6.5. The usual high energy stuff. I thought he did well in the 1st half but looked a little off the pace in the 2nd.
Allen : 6.5. Unlucky not to score from a delightful flick/shot. Involved in both defence and attack. Not his best game but suffice to say we've missed him.
Coutinho : 7. Others may disagree with this rating but he looked by far one of our most dangerous attacking outlets. Superb shot against the post. I can only think he was pulled for his propensity to give away possession now and again however I'd rather that, and his creativity, than stale boring football lacking penetration.
Sterling : 6.5. Tried hard but was doubled up on and found it very tough to find space. Don't know why we didn't try switching him to the right.
Balotelli : 4. I'd better not start a diatribe. He doesn't help his cause or ours regardless of what is or is not going on around him. As usual attacks falter on this rock.

Subs.
Lallana : 6.5. Immediately added creativity and threat to the attack.
Can : 6. Nice cameo and did nothing wrong but ultimately didn't make a difference. I loved the part where he gave away possession then chased back to regain it.
Markovic : 5. Again didn't do much wrong but offered nothing in attack. He seems very lacking in even trying to take defenders on.

Rodgers : 4. I didn't like his formation, team selection or taking Coutinho off.

Just to offer a bit of perspective, we were great in the first 20 minutes...very similar to what we saw so often last season. If we'd scored in that period i doubt we would have gone on to get turned over as we did. So we lost to the best side in Europe who, according to their manager, put in their best performance of their season so far. But there are fine margins and IF we'd got that first goal, who knows?

Now, let's talk about Suarez. And Rafa.

That's almost exactly what I said in my previous post.

How come you get more likes instead ?

Ok who's having me on ignore ?

:-(

Got lucky I played footy instead then

I knew Ludo would win so it's all open

As long as Rodgers learns from every time we get merked who we shouldn't be playing, and how much we need a real DM on Euro nights

I thought we played quite well last night, it just wasn't our night. We needed luck to go our way to beat a team that is that far ahead of us. We needed to hold out until half time and then hit them on the counter, once Ronaldo scored, it was going to take a minor miracle to get back into it. We started off pretty well, fell behind due to a moment of brilliance from the best player in the world, no shame in that.

Once that happened it was always going to be difficult. We were poor for their next two goals, more so on the third, but that didn't teach us anything new, we're all over the place at the back, we know that.

Sterling caused them problems, and Coutinho was bright at times. Can played well when he came on, although the game was over at that stage. Johnson was decent too.

Balotelli does not suit our team, and Markovic doesn't look like he will either(prepared to give him a bit more time). But that's 35m or so we spent, that we've actually got nothing from them in three months. I think Andy Carroll had provided more at this stage of this time with us than those two have. It's not their fault, it's our fault for buying them. We bought poorly in the summer with regards to performing well this year. I'm hopeful that some of them will prove better buys in the long run.

First 20 mins we looked good, there were times that Balotelli did offer movement but not nearly enough. I think one of the things that seems to have happened because we are struggling is that a good number of the players are trying to do too much.

Stirling - trying to beat 3 or 4 men - a cross sometimes can be beneficial.
Coutinho - trying to thread a ball through a gap that isn't there
Lallana - trying to beat players but failing, a cross will do

Also we seem to be gun shy when in the box., fucking shoot its the only way too score.

It also says something that I would put Can in the Top 3 players when he came on and he only played 20 mins...
