I see a few 6's for Lucas. I thought he played a really good game tonight. At time it was him alone in the midfield. Carragher was good too, back to his best. Torres was wank up until the goal, Aqua needs time and physique, but you can see the quality. Benayoun was ineffective but its a team game, and as a team we played really well tonight.

Did we just win at Villa Park? These ratings suggests we lost 6-1!

Aqua a 0? Whats that about? Drugs?

Fantastic win, lets give the lads some credit. Everyone had a good game, with a few hick ups.

Nope every single player on both sides was completely incapable of passing more than 5 yards to someone in the same shirt.

Shit game - piss poor play - one moment of pure class

Very difficult conditions. It's not easy controlling the ball and passing well while it's snowing and the pitch is slippery.

The conditions were very bad though and the ball was skidding all over the place, all players should be given a little leeway because of that (except Insua the fucking drunken tortoise).

I think your too harsh on Insua, mate. I thought he had a good game considering the extremely difficult conditions.
Oops. Just noted your next post - Insua is really upsetting you, so...

Reina 9 - That save was incredible. Good footwork on the shoe-change as well. (MOTM)

Insua 6 - Great at going forward but REALLY needs to learn how to defend when the ball is beeing crossed from the opposite side of the pitch and he needs to learn it quick. Thank you.

Agger 8 - Almost back to his own best tonight imo. Besides one lost man-to-man battle with Carew he stood his ground and looked assured throughout. I'd like him to get a goal soon mind.

Carra 8 - Another great defensive display. Worked and battled his socks of and even hit a few good passes too.

Johnson 5 - He's really enjoying a bad spell isn't he? Loosing easy balls and really struggles at the back. Had a few good runs upfield otherwise unconvincing.

Benayoun 7 - Battled but struggled to have an impact on the slippery surface it seemed. Vital tackle for the assist to Torres.

Aqua 6 - He's got something about him but is still a way from his best form it seems. To many wayward passes but he does on the otherhand try to hit those defense-shredding passes none of our other midfielders seems capable of.

Lucas 7 - One of his better games. Worked his socks off too and even spiced up his performance with a few attacking-minded great passes. Still needs better awareness and I'd love to see him actually hit the goal one day with a shot from outside the area. Or from anywhere actually.

Kuyt 5 - He can be soooo frustrating good ol Dirk can't he. Thought he was mostly mediocre to bad today but he somehow still managed to make something of it now and then. I think I'd prefer Benayoun right and Babel/Riera left in a few games to rest him a bit.

Gerrard 8 - The captain had one of his best games in a long while tonight. Still needs to get back to his scoring ways and practice on those corners too. That said he looked more like his own self than seen in a long while. Bodes very well.

Torres 7 - Apart from his extremely well-taken goal and a few mazy runs he still looks a bit from his best form. That he still manages to score such a vital goal in such a late stage of the game tells its own story. He's the best and I hope he stays a red forever.

SUBS

Babel 7 - Another good cameo from Babel. Apart from the miss-timed header (Agger-style if I may) he looked composed on the ball and very direct in his play which added a dimension to our game. Good squadplayer and great he's fit again.

Yup. Clean sheet is ace.

Liverpool go away from home;

- to a team they cant afford to lose against,
- in snowy conditions,
- after losing their last away game to the bottom club,

and then proceed to pass their way around the opposition, albeit with little cutting edge up top - yet the midfielders are getting 4's, 5's and 6's, yet we give up 2 clean cut chances from corners and a rely on a good save from Pepe from an open play chance and the defenders are getting 7's and 8's ?

This was a marked improvement with our performance and the midfield I think were wholely responsible. Lucas, Aqualad, Benayoun, Kuyt and Gerrard were prepared to play passes. Despite some early mistakes from each of those players, they persisted with the passing instead of resorting to long balls - credit where its due for that.

Awful conditions, our right flank had a mare but we won and thats all that matters at the moment.
Usual suspects Kuyt, Johnson and Lucas were awful again. Yossi not good on the left. Nothing new.
Lucas/Aqua in the middle, the most lightweight midfield in our history.
The comitment was there ant thats why we stayed in the game. Hardfought win, that will be good for confidence.

Good calls re Insua and Lucas.
Disagree re Johnson - too generous as he was rather poor imo.
Too harsh on Aquilani who was very commited and involved although admittedly his passes were far from top class (which could be expected considering the conditions).
And BTW, how is Lucas your MOM with 8 while you gave Pepe 9. Pepe was definitely MOM for me.

Yet we controlled the midfield for most of this game. I thought we looked more dynamic in the middle that we have lately.

Hmmm.

Even in the light of day there is still no redemption for Insua's performance.

As has been said many times before, a defender needs to be able to defend first and foremost. For Johnson his speed enables him to recover situations Insua simply can not because he is far too slow to perform as required. I mentioned somewhere else that I like Insua when he is in attacking mode. He has good feet, a great cross and usually does well retaining possession (hence my LM comment). But defensively he is a nightmare, here are some of the instances yesterday where he could and nearly did lose us the match :

1. Scalped by Agbonlahor x 2 (both times gave away free kicks because his only recourse when faced with far faster players (and not just Agbo') is to hold them back and foul them).
2. Scalped by Milner x2 (one a FK and the other time Agger bailed him out)
3. Very poor header inside the penalty area gave the ball to Villa and led to a period of intense pressure. There were two of these poor headers yesterday.
4. Completely lost (well never had actually) Milner which led to Pepe's remarkable (if lucky) save - if this was the military he would have been charged AWOL. He actually ran into the back of Kuyt whilst the ball went whistling over his head.

How people are saying it was his best performance for us (and I think Oncy must have been drunk last night when he posted) is absolutely beyond me. If that was his best then he should never be let near our team again !

I must admit to being disappointed by Insua this season, I really thought he would step up to the mark.
Then I realised I was being a little unfair on the lad, the age he is, coming in from abroad and stepping up from the reserves like he has.
The last few games he has shown considerable improvement, and again last night, I am not sure if it was his best game, but not a bad one.
That said , defensively, and it doesn't say a lot for him, he is still the best recognised left back at the club
Froggy is now trying to justify his slamming by digging a bigger hole for himself.
If he looked at the other side of the pitch he would have seen a similar ,he was certainly no worse than our £18m right back, who I am all sure we could list a few skinnings for too.
I know this is all about opinions Frogster, but if you find yourself out of kilter with nearly everyone, there is usually a reason, step back and have a good think about it. Even Brendan probably his biggest critic has looked at relatively fairly.
There were a lot worse performances to worry about than Insua's, but rarely have I been so pleased with a goal.
Still, as has been said a win is a win.

regards

As I said Vlad - Johnson can extract himself from difficult situations because of his pace. Agbonlahor switched wings to good effect because he knew (or MON knew) that Agbonlahor would have a much easier time against someone who lacks pace - and, unless you are Sami there really is no way someone as slow as Insua can contain fast wingers without persistently fouling them.

As for being out of kilter - well go through the thread. Until the Insua issue was raised he was generally being marked down. Then the sheep factor seemed to encourage people to give him an extra point. Still he was in the range of 5 to 6 for most. Oncy was I suspect drunk when he posted, and St George admitted he was bladdered ! Other than that these were his marks :

6.5 X 1
6 X 4
5.5 X 1
5 X 2

I may have been a little harsh on him as he contributed going forward but his defensive displays (and particularly his lack of pace) are going to cost us. And I think Rory Fitzgerald seems to have nailed it with his comment :

and then proceed to pass their way around the opposition, albeit with little cutting edge up top - yet the midfielders are getting 4's, 5's and 6's, yet we give up 2 clean cut chances from corners and a rely on a good save from Pepe from an open play chance and the defenders are getting 7's and 8's ?
