Ratings vs Arsenal (H)

Tough tough game. Feels like a loss.

Reina - 5 - I wanted to give him a 4 but two top class saves (Walcott & Rosicky) pushed it up despite the two gaffes.

Johnson - 6.5 - solid game.

Carra - 6.5 - solid game

Skrtel - 7 - I thought he was excellent

Agger 6.5 - he played well considering LB isn't his position

Masch - 6.5 - was poor in the 1st half but simply phenomenal in the 2nd half.

Gerrard - 7 - I thought Gerrard played well. A few good set pieces and seems to be 'back'.

Jova - 6.5 - strong debut. He seems to be a Kuyt + pace. He's going to be a crowd favorite I think.

Kuyt - 7 - solid game from Kuyt.

Cole - n/a - It seems he was just getting warmed up with some nice touches before that yellow card tackle.

Ngog - 7.5 - MOTM. Well done.

Subs:

Torres - 6 - I just hope he's healthy most of the season, he's key to our chances of finishing top 4

Maxi - n/a

I would agree with that.

Jova - 6 is a fair score on the balance of play, but i like what i have seen so far.

Lots of good running. He has got pace, and is able to dribble. I would like to see some of the infamous two words - 'end product.'

I'm not sure about Jovanovic. He's a decent squad player, and he's got heart and pace, but his lack of close control and composure make me hope he's not our first-choice LW this season. Though I'm not sure who else could be...

He has effectively replaced Riera, and i'm comparing against that yardstick. Riera managed to provide some width, and i'm not sure Jovanovic provides that for us - but he offers a more direct goal threat (more evidence needed, of course). So i think we have done well.

He was pretty poor in the first half but the goal definitely lifted his play in the second.

Masher was MOTM, I thought N'Gog was poor in the first half and excellent in the second, good hold up play and a great finish. Skrtel was excellent in the backline too, he was everywhere snuffing out danger.

Reina - 5 On the match alone, he blundered, it cost us, but it's harsh to criticise an otherwise excellent keeper.
Johnson - 6.5 Good support play.
Carra- 6.5 Steady Eddie
Skrtel - 7.5 Excellent
Agger - 7 Gave good balance, some good interceptions but worrying injury scares.
Masher - 8 Everywhere. Lively, quick, pounced on EVERYTHING.
Gerrard - 7.5 kept us ticking over, good passing and industry.
Kuyt - 7.5 Ditto the above, creative too, thought he had a great game.
Jova - 6.5 Good solid debut
Cole - 6 Not much came off, shit sending off though.
N'Gog - 7 Good goal, no one could take that away from him, poor first half, good second.

Kuyt had an excellent game, Arshavin did nothing in this game and they created very little on their left hand side. Much of this was due to Kuyt tracking back to help Magic in defense.

The defence as a unit had an excellent game - some of you are giving them rather lower marks than they deserve. Arsenal are one of the tougher attacks they will have to face this season - even without Fabregas - and they nullified and frustrated them.

Bren, you had to be happy with the lineup and the way Roy has generally gone about things?

No Lucas, no Aqua, no Insua, a striker for a striker despite being a man down. All in all, I thought it was promising and a good sign of things to come. And despite N'Gog, he scored a good goal and generally filled in well.

It was promising in the belief shown, but not particularly in the play. We didn't play particularly good football at any point, did we? And the best aspects of our play were defensive. That's hardly a phase change.

Biggest difference is a bit of energy in Anfield and the players not moping feeling sorry for themselves.

Despite their injuries, we were still playing one of the best footballing sides around, so while we weren't firing on all cylinders (first game and the WC etc) we did our job, we stopped them and we were adventurous for the most part, even after the sending off.

I thought it was promising, I think it'd be a bit naive to have expected us to play any Arsenal side off the park, especially with 10 men for more than half the game.
