Rafa to hold charity Q&A sessions

Its quite possible that Alonso did want to return to Spain in 2007, and then changed his mind.

here's the quote, speaking to Reade in November/December 2007:

When asked why he didn’t just walk away from Liverpool if it was so much hassle, and take up one of the regular offers from Real Madrid, he replied: “I love the club too much and my wife loves living here. This is my home.

“Also, if I go, Reina, Arbeloa, Mascherano and Torres would all leave too. Xabi Alonso will go anyway, because he wants to go back to Spain.”

WRONG ABOUT PEPE WERENT YA RAFA!!

*shakes fist*

LOL

If I go, all the best Spanish players will go as well. Bit of a nasty quote that and untrue as well.

Why can't seemingly clever people see through his bullshit ?
With all due respect, you make everything a black and white issue. Perhaps they are just trying to be a bit more objective?

Just sayin...

Objective?

Try wrong.

Rafa tells the press a lie to bolster his own position at a time when hes involved with a game of brinksmanship with the board. Some people try to believe it and look stupid in the process.

how does rafa saying alonso will go whether he stays or not, because he wants to return to spain, bolster his position or otherwise serve his own interests? you're right, i really can't see through that one - guilty as charged!

Hey Peter, why dont you ignore two thirds of the quote and make a small irrelevant point on the rest of it ?

the whole point of originally bringing up this point was the alonso part! i only provided the rest of the quote to put it in context. i've got zero interest in arguing about whether rafa was ever self-serving or untruthful, as you seem to be focussing on: he's a football coach not the fucking pope, after all.

and so now we can argue about whether he's a coach or manager?

or self-serving or not?

in case you've forgotten, the point i originally made was that i'd like to know more about what exactly went on with the alonso saga, particularly in light of a quote i'd seen suggesting he wanted to leave as far back as 2007. i then provided the quote: 'alonso will go anyway because he wants to go back to spain'.

have you got anything at all to say about that? if not, i guess we're done here.

Didn't someone say earlier in the thread that Alonso signed a new contract after that?
That was mentioned. Could have been a bit of respect for the club by Alonso or a deal the club put to him, sign this contract and we will sell you at the end of the season. They all knew he would be leaving but signing a contract would maximise the profit to Liverpool.

yep, well technically before, but the point still stands that him signing a deal in june 07 undermines the claim that he wanted to go back to spain in december 07. but, equally, i can't think why rafa would say that if he didn't believe it. if he was trying to make himself less dispensable then he'd claim that alonso's departure was dependent on him leaving, as with arbeloa, reina, mascherano and torres. but he doesn't - why?

Not only was he a machiavellian coach he also was very delusional.
As I often said, 2007 was the begining of the end for him

Alonso would be here now if he wasn't forced out.

Sorry.
he wasn't forced out when he was sold. if alonso wanted to be at liverpool, he would be at liverpool.

Cos no club would get a player to sign a contract if they wanted to sell him. Especially as length of contract has zero bearing on the value of a player nowadays.

Most unusually for Rafa, he swallowed his pride and publicly announced he wanted Alonso to stay. Alonso's departure was Alonso's choice.
