So Rafa is going to be in charge next season. How do you feel about that?
When we aren't playing football games I don't quite have the same rancour towards the man, and with all the details becoming available about the lies he's been told, the promises broken and constraints he's been working under and STILL he wouldn't abandon us for Juventus. Even with our chairman saying it'll take 3 years to turn round he's still here concentrating on the next game.
He's a bit like Batman really.
Ha, yeah a shit, fat, bearded, spanish batman!!

The fact that he will be here next year makes me a bit uneasy. To be honest i dont expect anything from next season. So i guess if we do win anything or get back in the CL then ill be happy! However....i do think that should next season go like last season and the club is sold in the middle of it all then i don't think rafa will see out the campaign! Saying that though, I will be behind him and the team on opening day, because regardless of manager, squad or owners its still one of the best feelings of the year to see Liverpool Football Club take to the pitch on the first day of the season!!

by not watching liverpool next season doesn't imply you hate rafa more than you love liverpool?
I support Liverpool. I get pissed off when we're playing shit, to the point of tearing my hair out, arguing with other fans, berating the team/manager/club/whatever, but we 'support' Liverpool, through thick and thin, the words of the song aren't just some hollow gesture, we're supposed to be the 'best fans in the World' and are renowned for our knowledge of the game and most importantly, our support.

So would I stop watching Liverpool because our manager has proven not quite good enough to get us what we want, despite him getting us our first European Cup in 21 years and taking us to another European Final? And winning us the FA Cup? And giving us Torres, Reina, Agger, Mascherano, Garcia, Alonso, Johnson (etc)?

Right.....................

He's done a shit job in the league and I doubt he'll ever get us there, but I'm not gonna start picking and choosing when I'll watch us, and only "singing when we're winning". That stuff is for the fans of those history-less blurts in South West London.
I think Rosco was probably joking, Mark. As was I, just in case you were wondering.
I missed your comment anyway BM, I wasn't jumping on anyone, I just don't get how someone could give up on us just because they don't like the gaffa. I don't particularly like the way football has gone, for the record, and it has began to make me question my love for the game, but I'm not gonna give up because I don't think the manager is upto scratch.
I don't know, supporting a football club shouldn't be some sort of burden you carry around with you. If the love is gone and you're getting nothing out of it - it's probably worth taking a break and coming back to it.
I think its more of a case of people being disenchanted with football nowadays. It has lost its magic ever since Sky ruined football and turned clubs into money grabbing businesses.

I for one cannot wait for the UEFA rules come in and hpoefully bring back what was good about the game.

It isnt a case of losing love for Liverpool FC, more a case of losing love for the game.

I think at the end of the day we should remember that only 5 or so years ago a lot of us would probably have said we would never want our club to be sold on to some billionaire sugar daddy / investment arm of some wealthy country. It isnt the Liverpool Way and it NEVER will be the Liverpool Way. We should start remembering that.

Oops, just read the third page and it turns out he wasn't joking (probably).

Nice post by Andy, and I agree with a lot of it, but you wouldn't be saying that if we were winning the league so I think that kind of voids your point a bit.
I dunno mate. Im starting to think ive had enough. These owners (eg) have no love or affinty with my club, but they make decisions that affect it and have weakened it and damaged it possibly forever. And what can i do about that?
If an entity changes and is no longer recognisable as that which you loved is it still the thing you love?
If your missus who made you happy and you felt comforted and completed by suddenly became selfish and money grabbing and greedy and along with that bored you silly and lied to you and hung around with people who didnt care about you and were vacuous and vile mercenary cheaters would you still fuck her?

Maybe we win 5 on the bounce at the start of the season and i realise its just the end of season blues talking, but fuck me i hate this bitch right now, she makes me feel unhappy all the time.

PS-The only thing i like about Liverpool right now is SCM.........oh and Pepe Reina

Did Sky really ruin football?

I think it's a little naive to think that without Sky everything would've been fine and players would've carried on taking the bus to the game or whatever. The world has changed in the last 20 years and football was always going to change with it.

All this talk of "the Sky generation" really gets to me at times. Football may not have that grass roots connection it once had, but it doesn't make it's fans any less passionate or knowledgeable or appreciative of the good things about the game.

Has the magic really gone for that young kid who idolizes Torres?

Sick really sick, that's how I feel.

We will bounce back this season and challenge for fourth, but its not good enough and not where we need to be.

Rafa has taken us as far as he can. 1 decent challenge in 6 years.

I'd rather see us go back for a year or 2 under a new manager with a fresh approach than have to sit through Rafa's style again.
I think by 'Sky generation' people are refering to the game as a whole, in fact the players as much as anything else. The saturation of the game and the commercialisation of it in general. Not the fans. The fans are those who are expected to swallow these changes without a whimper.

Mitchell & Webb - Football, Football, Football

There was a period in the mid 90's, while living in Scotland, when Sounness was in charge around about 92/93 that I stopped taking as much interest in Liverpool games for a season or 2, much of it to do with circumstances at the time, etc.

Sometimes a break is good... helps reaffirm your passion for the team.

But, to continue your fantastic (if slightly worrying for Misred) analogy, it's not that your wife herself has changed, it's that she's been taken over by some kind of alien mind-meld - and you're the only one that can save her and bring her back to herself again. How could you abandon her in that scenario? She needs you more than ever!

I'm disappointed that Rafa is staying because he promised so much and delivered so little. Obviously our expectations were raised after winning no.5 and a FA Cup. We all expected to kick on from there. We have been consistent but hardly spectacular although there have been times when its been hard to believe that we are watching the same Liverpool team lurch from one extreme playing brilliant attacking football against the likes of Barcelona and Real then losing to the likes of Reading and Wigan. Coming 2nd gave me hope for a bright future. That seems so long ago.

Rafa has my sympathy for inheriting the likes of Hicks and Gillett and the conditions under which he is working. Could any other manager do better? Are there any viable alternatives to Rafa as things stand? Despite all that is said and done, he is ultimately responsible for bringing in players and offloading them. He has made mistakes and needs to accept that. Everybody does! The difference is he has much less room for error.

When comparing our squad against the likes of the scum, we certainly don't look inferior. It's our footballing philosophy that has hurt us. Whatever happened to pass and move?Largely, we don't play attractive football and I can live with that as long as we are stacking up the points. But we haven't even been doing that. We are currently very mediocre and need improving fast.

We don't need a team of superstars to win silverware, we need a team all pulling in the same direction. That didn't appear to be the case last season. It feels like the great institution that is Liverpool, is under siege and under the very real threat of going into administration in the foreseeable future if we don't get sold and soon. IMO, Rafa is literally the last man standing between us and chaos. While he is here, I will support him.

The game will always evolve that much is not open for debate, Im sure there were plenty of old timers who thought the abolotion of the maximum wage for footballers would ruin the game etc but thats life all industries change. What people generally mean by "Sky" having ruined football is that its become so bland and commercial, the way the same ideas are rammed down your throat incessently ala zonal marking, this "Golden" generation of by and large average footballers who have been put up on pedastel and then systematically made themselves paraiahs, Jamie Redknapp droning on about these "top top" players who are "literally" the best thing hes ever seen all the while wearing a pair of pants so tight you can tell what religion he is. The game has been dumbed down to the point where some people think David Beckham was one of the best players of the last 10 years, advertisers maybe players not on your fucking life. Then there is the sycophantic way they salivate over Fergie/Rooney/Mourinho/Ronaldo/Henry/any england player nothing even approaching an analysis of the game just a shameless witchhunt to see who can blame it on the referee fastest and stir up some controversy to sell more advertising space (more Beckham) and more newspapers. Some tosser on their 24 hour news channel standing outside the club shop at St James/Elland Road/ Fratton Park like a carrion bird waiting to deliver news of the latest impending disaster. I would happily pay Sky to show me the games and nothing else, no build up no analysis no post match circle jerk with Keyes Redknapp and Gray.

Im not done with football, or Liverpool but I am finished with Sky, the only thing they have added to the game is saturation coverage, everything else they have done is firmly in the loss column.

I don't watch any of the football programs and never stick around for pre-game build up, half-time or full-time analysis as I'm not interested in what any of them have to say. If you don't like it, why do you watch it?

They do have some funny moments though with Chris Kamara, Phil Thompson etc. and who doesn't love Gray's commentary when Gerrard smashed that third goal in against Olympiakos... so it's not *all* bad all the time.

It may be dumbed down and the commentary can grate at times when it's at it's worst, but to talk of these things ruining football just seems really over the top to me.

To be fair to Leeds their fans have been turning up and producing record crowds for League 1. Unlike Newcastle when they dropped to a 13,000 attendance when they got relegated back in the 80's.

I have to say Spion that many of the Leeds fans that I knew during their glory days, have disappeared for a long time but are now starting to appear again. However I do take your point about attendances at matches which I suppose at the end of the day is the important thing.

So what then? You take a break when things are going bad, then come back when there is an upturn in fortunes? I dont understand how that works. Sounds a bit "Leedsish" to me.
Fucks sake, don't be soft in the head. You don't take a break from supporting the team. It's about the intensity with which you support the team with.

There's no gold stars for making sure you wear a Liverpool top more often or watch every single game.
Thats just plain fucking stupid!
In what way is it stupid?
In the respect that you stop "taking as much interest" as you put it, during a period when things are not going well. Thats how its stupid.
Not quite as simplistic as that because it usually involves other factors, like what else is going on in your life at the time.
Yup. Have to admit this past season that while I followed the table and was on here at least lurking every day, I didn't actually manage to watch all that many games. The sacrifice of time and sleep, paired with the conflict against my final year of university and moving away from home meant that tuning in to watch a scoreless draw didn't rank as high on my priorities. Of course, I still cheered the team on and felt the highs and lows (and even managed to travel overseas to catch my first game at Anfield [predictably a loss]). But the fire didn't quite burn as bright this year. Hopefully an alignment of my life and the team's fortunes will renew the spark again this season, even if signs don't look particularly encouraging right now.

So Rafa is an alien .... that would explain things
