It's a well known practice in the lower leagues I know that. The players get playing bonuses so basically the manager asks for half of that bonus if they play them.

I think what you're referring to is the deal Holloway had at Blackpool which included a bonus % for any players they sold (who Holloway originally signed) at a profit i.e buy a player for £1m sell him 2 years later for £3m and Holloway got a decent percentage of the profit. It must have been legit because Holloway and the Chairman were very open about this clause in his contract.
