We need to overcome the historical drop-off that occurs following a European game. It may well be that we should choose to freshen the midfield. We've already overcome a few statistical blips this season by belying our comparatively poor record in the early Saturday fixtures and the game following an international break. Lets continue to overturn these poor habits.

The Reds had 31 Premier League games over the five years which came less than seven days after a European fixture.
They won 11, drew 11 and lost nine of those for an average of 1.42 points per game, compared to 1.84 in their other league games the same seasons.

Danny Ings will be a miss for them but Charlie Austin's a decent player in his own right if he's fit and on his game. I hope we don't take him too lightly.

No offence, but Charlie Austin is fucking shit and he probably won't even play.
I bet it's either Shane Long alone upfront or him and Gabbiadini.
Either way, they're all shit and we're gonna win with ease.
Fuck jinxes.

To some extent that's what my "if" refers to. Modo's obv.entitled to his view, but if Austin plays and our defence goes out there with the same view we could pay for it.

I still expect us to win BTW but I have a hunch it might be closer than we would like.

Well JJ I doubt any of the players ever have the same attitude / view we do on here !

Austin can be a sharp finisher when on form, however (1) he didn’t score this season so far and (2) Hughes will most likely opt for a more hard-working option like Long or Gabbiadini up front with a 5-man midfield. I recon Austin might come on later in the game if Saints are still in striking distance.

Biggest threat for us is probably another Hojbjerg belter from distance.

I think he will rest/rotate a few for this after the intensity of Spurs and PSG performances. We will be a little bit below our best as a result. Still expect us to have too much for them, but I dont think we will smash them like we would with our full strength line up. I reckon the Powercube might get off the mark

The more I think about it the more I think Klopp picks his strongest possible side. All the squaddies will get their chance in the midweek Carrierbag cup, and everyone who needs a rest will get a week without a game. The team that started against Spurs will start again today. This is a crucial game. 6 consecutive league wins to start the season is something we've never done before, and Southampton will attempt to make it as tough as possible. Lest we forget we had a horrendous amount of home draws last season in exactly this kind of fixture. No let up, no experiments, no "let's give Fabinho a game and rest Bobby". Therein lies dropped points.

I think with the Chinese drink (or whatever the fuck carabao is) cup looming we'll play almost the same side today.

I suspect Keita will come back in. Whether for Hendo or Milner I'm not sure. Milner doesn't deserve dropping obv, but perhaps a week long rest now will help him later in the season, which may come into the equation.

Ideally I'd play Shaqiri instead of Firmino to ensure a longer rest for his poorly peeper, but Sturridge surely earned himself another chance to show what he can do upfront again.

Liverpool make three changes for this afternoon’s Premier League clash with Southampton at Anfield as Xherdan Shaqiri is handed his full debut.

The Swiss forward comes into the starting line-up in place of James Milner, while Roberto Firmino is restored to attack.
Elsewhere, Joel Matip is drafted in for Joe Gomez in the centre of defence.
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Shaqiri, Mane, Salah, Firmino.
Subs: Mignolet, Fabinho, Milner, Keita, Gomez, Sturridge, Moreno.

Matip starting is the bigger surprise. Should be enough to beat them anyway. I'm very interested to see how Shaqiri does.

Have a feeling that Klopp will be looking to rotate early depending on the score of course.
