Pre match: Sheffield U (H)

Sheff are a good team and we basically come in with the same amount of rest, or lack thereof, having played on the 26th, 29th and now the 2nd. Being at Anfield, fatigue being equal but our depth and talent being greater, i expect 3 points tomorrow then rotate as much as reasonably possible given injuries against Everton.

Fuck the regular front three - give them a rest, I want Shaq, Div, and Ninja to be up front, and I ain't talking about our resident Ninja on this site, the real one we have from Japan now !!!

Naturally, Shaq is hurt in the period we need him most. So fking frustrating.

We have just seen what happened to Newcastle (4 injuries in one match) clearly due to the condensed program and lack of rest yet people are still saying go full strength ? We only have 3 subs. What will you be saying if we lose one or more of VvD, Mo, Mane, Robbo or TAA for 3 months to a hamstring pull?

We need to rotate for both this match and Everton to ensure every player misses at least one of those games. Not full scale for this one but definitely use Lallana, Milner, Origi, Keita and Shaq if ready. Those 5 are still up to or better than the level of SU, who have a smaller squad than Wolves and have pretty much played every game throughout the Xmas season.

Think long term not just ensure 3 points. I'd rather take just the one than have an injury or two to key players. However our squad players have already proved they are up to it, we need to have confidence in them, I'm pretty sure Klopp does.

I mostly agree with that – I think both EPL and FAC squads should be a mix of regular starters and subs. Not sure Klopp will trust Phillips to start in any of those games, so we'll just have to hope Virge and Joe come through unscathed. But in other positions rotation is very possible; in fact ideally Robbo, Trent, Hendo, and the front 3 would start 1 of the 2 games each. Here's an example:

Sheffield (h) 4-3-3:
--------------Alisson------------
---------Gomez--VVD---------
Trent------Hendo------Milner
--------Gini------Keita---------
Mane-------Firmino------Origi

Subs: Adrian, Phillips, Robertson, Lallana, Jones, Elliott, Firmino

Everton (cup) 4-2-2-2:
--------------Alisson------------
---------Gomez--VVD---------
Williams-----------------Robbo
-----------Gini--Milner--------
---Minamino---------Lallana---
---------Salah-------Origi-----

Subs: Adrian, Phillips, Trent, Keita, Hendo, Mane, Firmino

I think it's a near certainty that Adrian will start against Everton (as he should IMO) and probably likely that Phillips will too, otherwise I don't know why he brought him back if not to give Gomez/VvD a rest (maybe sub on vs SU if we are comfortable enough and start vs. Everton).

vs. Everton
I would also consider pushing MM up to replace Salah (giving him a two game rest) and using Keita in midfield. He hasn't played as often and should be up for that - we can always bring Mo or Mane on from the bench. That aside those two teams probably have enough to win both games.

We need to prioritise Sheffield United. They're doing brilliantly and have the collective work-effort to cause us real problems. We'll need moments of quality to break them down so our front three will have to be at their sharpest. Lundstram is likely to be back for them following injury and he's been excellent this year. Fingers crossed he's a bit rusty.

The City loss was their first away from home, so their away form has been very impressive for a newly promoted side.
Will be a tough game and we shouldnt rotate to much.

We should just injure our players instead.

Trent looked knackered last game and will 100% want to play in the FA Cup derby so for me he is the prime rotation candidate, maybe with one of Mo or Mane too but also happy enough for early subs of those we want to protect. I'd rather give Williams a go at RB but I expect it would be Milner if we did rotate Trent.

Rather rotate Trent for the Everton game in all honesty. Sheff Utd will be hard to break down, and we'll lose a lot of our attacking play if he isnt involved.

True - I just struggle to see a situation where we drop Trent for the derby and he is someone we shouldn't be risking injury with

Every game from now until Mid March is a must win. So we need to win this one, don't care who starts. Sheffield United isn't an easy team to play against, they've shown in their away form where to pack their mids and defence to hit opponent on counter, they have so far conceded 9 away from home, one lesser than their home form. In the 10 away games they've played, they've lost to Man City last weekend. They are the kings of draw with 6 away draws so far.

If we could register an early goal against these lot, I think we should be home free. If we fuck about and played like we did against Wolves, we could find ourselves biting our nails for good 90mins.

We need fresh legs to run them down. Keita rested last time and Origi is ready to go. Maybe together with Firmino and Mane/Salah.

It is a risk to play those who might be fatiguing but actually after this game we have a full week between the next three fixtures (so a full week of rest either side of the Spurs match). I'd still rotate one of Trent/Robbo in this one and the other one for the FA Cup.

We've got the small matter of a FAC derby game against Everton at the weekend don't we ?

I phrased it poorly but I mean a full week post FA Cup, game that weekend vs Spurs and then a full week again before the United game.

Look at the goals conceded to date

1 Us - 14
=2 Leicester - 19
=2 Sheffield - 19
4 Palace - 23
5 City - 24
6 United (!) - 25

We are going to need the “big boys” to score tonight

Everyone's going to need to be at it. Wilder knows what he's doing (his dad's a Scouser so of course he does) and they are nobody's patsies.
