Firmino, Gomez and Keita back for this one. No chance for others, apparently

Elliott should obviously start but it's going to be Gomez, Henderson, Keita and Firmino in for Phillips, Elliott, Milner and Nunez, isn't it?

How can Elliott be dropped after his performance against Palace? He was everywhere, gave everything on the pitch. The only question is Milner vs Keita at LCM.

Fabinho was fine for most of the game, but seems like he hit a physical wall at certain points, one of which was their goal unfortunately. He needs to keep playing and get back to fitness.

From Klopps presser it sounds like Gomez, Firmino and Keita will start.

Yep - it sounds like that in terms of Gomez, and Keita. But still not sure on Firmino - as I think at some level he will want to involve Elliot in the starting line up.

Oh I'm 100% with you on that one. But given it's United away, I think Klopp will play Henderson (he did well after he came on tbf)

I dunno guys. I'm just not seeing the same things in Elliot that the rest of you seem to be seeing. I know he's still very young, but based on what I'm observing in matches, he just doesn't blow my skirt up.
Neat and tidy, but offers nothing in terms of winning the ball back.

This is exactly what i was going to ask about, he buzzes around nicely enough but i don’t recall any lung busting cover for Trent or anything of note in his own half. Maybe I didn’t pay enough attention or maybe he’s doing as instructed?

It’ll be…

Allison
Trent Gomez Vvd Robbo
Fabs Elliott Keita
Salah Firmino Diaz

…and 0-3

Elliott vs Palace (played 79 mins)

• 54/60 (90%) passes
• 2 chances created
• 74 touches
• 3 shots
• 1/1 dribble
• 5/7 tackles (2nd in game)
• 2 interceptions (=1st for LFC)

You can give me all the stats you like Froggy. He just doesn't pass the eyeball test for me. Doesn't make things happen. Doesn't seem particularly skillful. Doesn't score goals. For me he's making up the numbers. Not shite, but nothing special. Like I said, just doesn't give me the fizz. Hope I'm 100% wrong.

The thing with stats is that there’s no context to them. Nobody has any idea what instructions Elliott has been given either, time will tell.

I'd start Elliot over Hendo, he's been dreadful for months now. Klopp keeps dropping him to save his legs but it's not working. When he comes back in he looks just as knackered as when he left. Hendo was never the quickest, or most skilled midfielder, he didn't have Thiagos 360 degree range of passing or Gerrards freakish athleticism. What he did have was the ability to stick to his task and execute a game plan to perfection. That plan was based on pressing relentlessly and perpetual motion.

He's not got that in his locker anymore, he's easily bypassed and once he gets turned he lacks the pace to recover. He's very quickly becoming a last 20 mins player when you need to see a game out. I don't think he's a starter anymore, Klopp is phasing him out.

Generally agree but he was excellent when he came on against Palace.

I know some people on this forum will say 'I believe my own eyes' or ' I know what I saw' but there are some issues there of course:
a) we are not professional coaches and we are not privy to what the player under discussion has been instructed to do
b) we may miss what has gone on because we are concentrating on the ball/game
c) Bias - clearly people have personal biases that affect how they see a performance, or even a particular incident
d) LFC base their team & transfer selection on stats - this has been emphasised time and time again with Graeme even saying he won't watch videos because it biases him against the stats. So in effect, don't believe your eyes believe the stats. And with our recent transfer history and success how can anyone argue against that?

Whilst not infallible we obviously have to go with the LFC methodology.

As far as this game goes - I'm worried. Far far too many people in the media saying we'll roll over them 5-0 or 5-1. We have a long list of injuries, Nunez is absent, a weak bench, away at OT, United getting spanked last week, a couple of players just returning from injury and what will be a piecemeal team. This is about as far from a game where we'll roll over them as you can get - regardless of United's current issues. I'll be happy with any win at all because this is ripe for an upset.

On the upside Mo is due a goal and I'm sure he'll score.

I agree - it’s not going to be easy. I think they’ll revert to OGS tactics - sit deep and hit on the counter - they’d be stupid not to at this stage - they don’t have a team or bunch of players to play out from the back and counter press - they know we can press and they’ll have seen how teams can beat us with low block and quick balls in behind our FB’s.

That said, we get a early goal, I think they’ll crumble.

Fortunately for us, Ronaldo is likely to get stuck in or offer pace to worry us like Mitrovic or Zaha nor would he want to play like a false 9 and if they push Rashford & Sancho up to get in behind our FBs - they’ll be exposed in midfield.

Erikson & set pieces is their best option.
