Does Klopp go full strength (of those available) for this, or take the opportunity to rest one or two for the game 4 days later vs the mancs?

A lot will obviously depend on the match fitness of those returning from injury. Sturridge had a good run out against Plymouth yesterday. Physioroom.com has Milner, Henderson, Matip, Grujic and Coutinho all with an expected return date of 15th Jan.

If Milner, Coutinho, Matip and Henderson are all out until then, the team selection and rotation becomes less contentious, because that's already four first team players possibly missing.

I'd play:

--------------------------Mignolet----------------

A-A--------Lovren-------------Klavan----------Moreno

-----------Wijnaldum---------Can-----------Lallana

Firmino----------Sturridge----------Woodburn

Give Clyne a rest, maybe.

There was nothing on show against Plymouth to make me confident about any other changes, but as you say, perhaps with United coming up we might be better resting one or two more first teamers, perhaps give Origi a game, despite how dreadful he was on Sunday, possibly Stewart also.

Was this the fixture last season at QF stage where Sturridge returned from injury and dicked them, finishing 6-0?

Same again please Studge. Strong xi, hopefully be able to hook a few in the early stages of the second half.

A scattering of kids but in the main may as well try and win this at their place. Should have won comfortably there in the league

--------------------------Mignolet----------------

A-A--------Lovren---------Klavan-----Moreno

-----------Wijnaldum---------Can-------Lallana

------------------Ovie----------------------------
Origi----------Sturridge----------

We killed Soton with Studge and Origi up front ... I think that would work ...

Actually, should Karius play in this one?

If the Number 2 is getting the Cup games? Mignolet played against Leeds in the QF, because Karius was first choice at the time.

Ming has to be kept fresh. I think he'll play.

Line up:

Mignolet

Clyne
Lovren
Klavan
Moreno

Lucas
Wijnaldum
Can

Firmino
Sturridge
Lallana

coutinho, milner, henderson all fit enough to be in the squad for weds according to klopp. he said its pretty likely karius will start and that matip was back in full training as of today.

He prefaced his statement saying that the strongest team we have will play on wednesday by talking about the media/ everyones focus being on the utd game being the final but needing to win this first, so er, we might play our first xi

Said it was likely that Karius starts. Doubt Hendo, Matip or Coutinho will be risked here, but maybe start on the bench.
Milner seems to be back 100%.

Klopp has said in his pre match there will be many changes. i.e no kids involved.

Karius Clyne Lovren Klavan Milner Can Wijnaldum Firmino Lallana Origi Sturridge

Absolutely. Play the best side and win, sort the next game afterwards. If we go into the Utd game with a healthy lead it'll do us the world of good

If we want any of Hendo, Coutinho, Matip or Milner to start against the Mancs then they either need to start this with a view to early replacement, or be pencilled in for early sub.

Given none featured vs PA i'd expect none to start this...

----------------Mignolet---------------- (aka whichever keeper we plan to start vs United)
Clyne---Lovren--Klavan---Moreno
------------------Can--------------------
---------Lallana----Wijnaldum-------
---Studge-----------------Woodburn-
----------------Firmino------------------

Would like to fit Origi in, but I liked to look of Woodburn the other day and we need Studge and Firmino to get better linked up ahead of Sunday as I'd expect both to start that one.

I trust the coaching staff have good track on who is up for the game and who need a few day more training only after the xmas program. I would be surprised if Milner starts, as he has been playing a lot. Same with Studge who has shown he is fragile for more than a game a month or so. I see Origi is branded shit cause he had an off day agaisnt Plymouth, but I have no worries about his qualities. Karius is probably continuing in goal, but hopefully the defence is so strong that he will not have a lot to do.

We have to play close to full strength. Don't get me wrong the League Cup is pretty way down on my list of priorities for the season but it would still be nice with a final (and a cup) and we could actually suffer a rather devastating defeat against what we have to expect to be a close to full strength Soton team with too many kids. That would not help us in any way at all.

It's a no brainer this one.

Yeah strong side needed. The ideal scenario would be a few early goals and pull the players off and rest for United. After losing the final last year, winning the league cup would be brilliant for both the squad and for Klopp. We have to take it seriously.

No better way to prepare for the Utd game than gettign pulled off, but would prefer it if we had Eva Carneiro on the bench to help out with that

If this is the away leg and Southampton field their strong team then we lose 1-0 or 3-0 tonight. No chance of winning with the players we have. Sorry but loss forecast.
